  1. No, but you can buy 1 Raspberry Pi, install Kodi, add Twitch and then live stream people playing every PC game you can think of
  2. Dustin ... 'cos there's so much dust in the pictures
  3. Tech Quickie: How it works: Spritzlet Explaining why humans read slowly (about 200wpm) and how Spritz technology can increase word per minute to a comfortable 600 read speed for most people. http://www.spritzlet.com There are some apps for mobile devices (e.g. Reedy) but I've not found an offline version to use.... yet
  4. Yea ... maybe.... that's what I was worried about When I took it apart, what was on there didn't look like thermal pads, but more like a rubbery, sticky goop. Unlike the GPU and CPU, I only removed it from the face of the other compinents and left the surrounding goop in place When I re-applied with thermal paste, I put the heatsync back on then removed it and it had spread it over the tops evenly, so there was good contact. I'll retry tomorrow and if it's kaput then I'll have to get another GPU or send it for repair ....
  5. I did look in the BIOS, but couldn't see anything specific to the 880M in there. It looks like the basic graphics settings are all that's available (and all I can remember seeing before) I didn't reset the CMOS tho - I'm not sure if there are jumper pins like on my desktop motherboard. It's worth having a second look first as the CF reader and the 2 USB ports to the left of the keyboard also don't work and need investigating. Should be easier/less scary now I've stripped it once already
  6. Yes, the display is using the internal graphics at the moment. It looks like it always did, but the GPU isn't seen in Device manager. The first I saw was when MSI Afterburner wasn't reporting temparatures (I monitor those in the taskbar) I put a healthy dollop of paste on the GPU and when re-fitting I lifted the heatsink and it had 100% coverage on the die, so it looked good. There must be a cable I've not connected correctly or something. I'll have to strip it back down and go over all the connectors. Fortunately I took some pictures as I went so I know that they're in the right way, but one must not be seated properly.
  7. As an aside - it wasn't actually that dusty inside. But the GPU had almost no thermal compound on the die and the CPU stuff was looking pretty baked and ratty (I do a fair amount of rendering/editing)
  8. Hi I was getting a bit worried with my 3yr old Asus G750JZ running hot and I know it was due a strip and clean. So tonight was the night. I tore it down to bits, removed the fans and motherboard and took of the heat excahnger to get to the old thermal gunk. Got rid of all that and reapplied with some Arctic Silver, put it all together and - hey presto it lives But - its not detecting the GPU I didn't remove the GPU card from the mboard, so there's really only 2 things I can think of that could be the issue 1) I shouldn't have removed the rubbery stuff from the components that were around the GPU and replaced with arctic silver 2) The Arctic Silver may be shorting out a component. I put it on clean, but there may be a bit of overspill (I didn't think it was conductive) Looking at another online teardown I think the surrounding components needed a thermal pad of some sort, but when I pu the cooler back on the GPU, I lifted it back up to make sure it had good contact and it all looked good and had spread evenly on all the components that had the gunk on before. Any help or advise is welcome. p.s. I'm surprised it actually works. I've never done a laptop teardown before. Damn LTT putting ideas in my head
  9. I think (hope) it was just bad planning. My g/f and I did a USA driving tour a couple years ago from Vancouver down to LA (then across to Zion) and before we left I got a Breffo Spiderpodium phone holder (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Breffo-Spiderpodium-Flexible-Holder-Samsung/dp/B003O1V5CY) to use in the rentals we had. It's a brilliant wee thing, hooks just about anywhere in the car and took zero space in our flight luggage. We still use it in our daily driver here with no signs of it giving up.
  10. That's pretty cool. I wonder if this would fit too: https://www.amazon.co.uk/SilverStone-SST-FF143B-140mm-Filter-Magnet/dp/B00A5TCCZ2
  11. Perhaps if Linus was in the passenger seat ... they could hold hands
  12. Everyone behind you So many times I've seen a queue of traffic sitting at a green light because the person front of the stopped cars is busy reading their phone .... I've seen people miss complete traffic light rotations and then sheepishly roll up to the (again) red after they realise there's no cars in front of them
  13. From what I remember, towards the end of episode 1 and fairly often during the first half of episode 2. The phone is mostly out of shot, but at one point while steering you can clearly see it in his hand. It doesn't look like texting or reading as the glances are quick - so it's more likely satnav use in which case it should be up on the dash to minimise the time it takes to move the eyes, see the image then back to the road and surroundings. As a biker I see it all the time. The number of people that think that they can't be seen texting or reading but the constant glancing at their crotch or door card makes it so obvious. The weaving down the road is also a pretty obvious giveaway
  14. Hi I have a Phanteks Enthoo Evolv with front mounted H115i with Noctua fans and a single Noctua fan on the exhaust. The radiator fans are push/pull which seems a bit of a waste of fan, so what I'd like to do instead is top mount them to add pressure and flow to the case when the GPU starts to heat up, but the one thing stopping me is that there's no filter in the top of the case. Has anyone made a filter for the top of the case, either custom or pre-fabricated?
  15. I can see where you're going with that thought, but I's unlikely to happen. Windows is the software brand where consoles are hardware based and a totally different division within the Microsoft corporate structure
  16. After watching the last couple of episodes of Scrapyard Wars (love them btw), it was really bugging me that Luke was checking his phone all the time while driving. I've had my share of close calls from texting drivers while on my motorbike and I have a friend that was knocked of his bike by a texting driver. it's been a big problem in the UK. I'm sure guys in BC already know the score, but for those that don't it's a decent fine + demerits if you get caught: https://www.caa.ca/distracted-driving SYW is already filmed, so we're in the hands of the editors now, but for future roaming projects, Linus / Procurement, please make sure your guys 'on duty' have hands free kits or a dashboard mounts available so phones can be safely used as satnavs. Not just for their safety... Selfishly I want you guys to continue making videos uninterrupted (and for the smartarses oot there - yes, I know this season's SYW was filmed in California where the fines are insignificant, but that doesn't make it any less dangerous)
  17. Thanks all for your replies to this thread so far. Some great points made and I've learned a lot from it ?
  18. Yes. I can see that being a factor and there was a video by der8auer (I think) where he warns that you have to be careful with the replacement glue as may be too thick and prevent good contact between the die and the IHS. Perhaps its a balance of all things? Closer/Direct contact with the IHS being the biggest factor and a better compound that removes more of the micro-air pockets that could create tiny hotspots being to icing on the cake. I've heard of some nutjobs people not putting the IHS back on and instead mounting the cooler directly to the die. But I think that's taking it a bit to far....
  19. I've seen quite a few videos recently where people were de-lidding their CPU and replacing the stock thermal compound under the IHS with either a better compound or in most cases, a liquid metal type of TIM. Every one of them see an improvement in their CPU temps and as a result more solid overclocking (up to 25C) Much less so with soldered chips, but still, there's an improvement over stock (about 5C) One guy even did a GTX1080 and the card was able to regulate it's own clock higher before he did anything with MSI as it was running cooler. And before anyone says it - yes I've seen the LTT video about delidding and Linus was pretty scruffy in his process... and still got an improvement over stock. It seems that the more meticulous you are using a safe delidding tool from der8auer (in EU) or Rockit Cool (USA) and just ....taking your time all seems to pay dividends in the resulting CPU temps. Expecially so if the stock TIM degrades over years of use. So, is the Silicon Lottery just a better appliance of thermal paste rather than the quality of the chip underneath? I imagine there will be some minor tolerances in the manufacturing process, but improving the contact between die and IHS seems to be a big part of making your CPU work more efficiently and faster. 20. No problem: https://www.google.com/#q=this
  21. Technically TeamViewer was an illegal install. Although you were using it for personal use, it was installed on a computer and over a network belonging to the educational facility which would mean you need a non-personal licence to use it on that machine.
  22. Do you mean Amazon Prime? With Amazon Prime the main account holder can set up a family group so they all share the benefits that the main prime account holder has. Each person has their own account and the main Prime member links that account to theirs. I don't know if they can see your purchases tho. I don't think so (it could ruin birthdays/Christmas if they could)
  23. Jeez ... you guys really know how to kill a joke ... *checks pulse* ... nope - dead as a doornail
  24. We're creatures of habit, so set up some routines that help you sleep. Try at least an hour before you go to bed: Avoiding visual stimulation (TV/Phone etc) Switch off some lights so the room gets darker (triggers your body to release some melatonin) Have a pre-bed routing. Wash face, brush teeth, fluff pillows ... whatever it is your body will recognise the routine and get you ready for resting. Sweet dreams
