saras got a reaction from Ben17 in Integrated GPU, do RAM capacities need to match?
Long story short, got a laptop with a single 8gig stick of ram soldered in and one free bay. No discrete GPU, just an HD620.

Now I want both more ram and slightly more speed, which going dual channel vs single is probably going to do. Now then, the question is this, for dual channel to work, does the ram distribution have to be symmetric? Do I need to match an 8 gig stick to the soldered in 8 gig stick to get the full HD620 speed?

I have now ordered a 16 gig stick that'll total my system to 24 gigs. My question is, does this basically permanently reduce the speed of the HD620 to single channel speeds, because the capacities don't match?

Depends if you can break up the workload easily, like rendering a simulation. Ultimately it would be something like a very small application of a server farm. Generally speaking, it's more effort than it's worth considering you only have two systems.

The remote desktop idea might be useable, but it requires really snappy connections. You'd probably still have to do the project on your laptop and only send the project data over for the final encode.

You do not lose literally anything by getting a second hand camera with a kit lens compared to one without it. Simple kit lenses go for next to nothing on the second hand market and effectively only increase the cost of the purchase by the cost of a few cups of coffee. And for that low cost, they give you a lot of flexibility.

A 50 isn't "general purpose" on APS-C bodies. You might know what you need, I might know what I need, however the problem is that he definitely doesn't: F stops, focal lengths are basically just meaningless numbers to someone who is just starting out. He doesn't know enough about the subject to where he could even explain to you what he needs.

And yes, they're great for what they do, but they aren't great for everything. I pretty much only shoot with primes now, but the catch is - I've got more than one of them. If you have something wide and something narrow, given two functional feet, you can do whatever and you no longer really need a basic walkaround. But that's with multiple lenses, if you try shooting an indoor party between friends and all you have is a 105, well then, you're kinda fucked. Boy I sure hope all anyone wants to see are heads, because that's all they're getting. Likewise with the opposite, see that perched bird? Imma go shoot it... with my 18mm... boy I sure hope that the wild bird doesn't mind having a camera at arms length from it.

So yes, he can go buy a few primes and do great... for more money than is his entire budget. for a hoby he doesn't know if he's going to stick with. Or he can get something for effectively nothing and learn about what it is that he needs in the first place.

saras got a reaction from Nup in Question on a Last Name
    If you're willing to speculate.

Balchun sounds like the anglicized version of the surname used in Lithuania "Balčiūnas" or "Balčiūn" for the root. If that fits to you, the etymology of that particular surname hails from "Baltas" or "White" in English.

That said, I'm only moderately familiar with slavic surnames, so it could be something from them as well. A lot of the surnames in the region are shared and it's not that easy to pinpoint them.

saras got a reaction from TheRandomness in A minitower I could fit into a travelling bag/that's portable for around 100?
I wish I could, but sadly I'll go with just the case.

The price is attractive but it seems to be rather tallish. I have no reference to the 130.

The cheapest z170 board I can find goes for roughly 150. So there's a premium to found there. But that looks like an option to to be considered.

I kind of like how it looks, I'll have to consider this a bit more

It actually is the cheapest from those manufacturers, >=40 inch, 1080p one in the store.

Well that was rather easier than anticipated.

saras got a reaction from PillowSmoke in Intend to build suitcase pc, planned the innards, need input
So yes, I've wanted to make a suitcase pc for aeons now. And since I've had a free evening I went about and tried to plan something.

    Ended up with this:

At the end. I'd end up with a roughly 54(perhaps longer if I need more space for the cables) x 35 x 15cm box. That I'd then fix into a suitcase.

I'd build the skeleton of the box out of 6mm thick acryllic(indicated by diagonal lines)(horizontal lines indicate free space). I'd put airways where it'd be in the way of the airflow. The motherboard and the GPU lead the I/O into the case, because I'd reroute it all, well the part's I'd need, to the top of the case individually.

    So yeah, input?
