  1. Hey there! Earlier this year I got in touch with NAS systems, albeit a bad one; the Seagate Personal Cloud. I've been using it as my personal cloud of course, and as my Plex Media Server. However, I'm not fully satisfied with its capabilities in terms of transcoding. So now, I'm looking for a NAS that'll let me transcode any media in 1080p reliably, which at the same time, isn't too expensive. I've been looking at the QNAP TS-253A, which is advertised to support transcoding up to 1080p, and is listed at 400 euros. My budget is about 550 euros; including NAS, and a HDD up to 4TB, at least being 2TB. Now I'm looking for advice on reliable NAS systems which have at least 1-2 bays, and fall within my budget. Thank you in advance!
  3. Hi! I'm not sure how long I've been having this problem, it only occured to me after Steam has been stuck in an update loop for long times on end for the past few days. My HDD (C:/) is constantly at 100%, and I can't find the problem through Task Manager or basic troubleshooting. My PC has been booting slowly lately (initial Windows boot is fast, but any other programs after seeing the desktop and taskbar are slow, e.g. Outlook 2013, Steam, Discord are slow) I'm in no position financially to purchase myself a replacement SSD for a while, so I'd like to get this issue resolved to avoid having to upgrade. Note: My C:/ drive is my Windows Drive, and is a normal SATA hard drive (Toshiba, not sure about specifics, it came with the PC) My D:/ drive is at 0% when not in use. This is a Samsung EVO 850 SSD at 250 GB. I bought this one later on, and don't want to lose data on my HDD to move Windows over. Tried solutions from here, Methods 1-4. Thank you for any help. EDIT: Additional info; sometimes closing programs (tried closing task manager earlier) causes said program to freeze up and not respond for a while. Chrome works fine, as does Discord right now, Steam doesn't (currently uninstalling to reinstall on my SSD) get past the "Updating steam, Extracting package" messages, and any other programs, once booted, work fine. Navigating through Windows Explorer is fine too, the usual loading, but nothing out of the ordinary. Steam might just work fine after a reinstall, but I still don't think my disk should be at 100% literally constantly so I'd like to have it resolved.
  4. Removed the ROG software and other bloatware. GPU temps go up to 80-85 at max during gameplay, and CPU sits at 70-80. Is this normal?
  5. All drivers are up-to-date, power management settings are all set for high performance. CPU/GPU usage are normal. Doesn't really go above 70% if at all, temperatures are fine too. CPU sits around 50, GPU around 60.
  6. Hi! My girlfriend recently bought a new laptop I chose for her, which would be an Asus ROG laptop. Specs: i7 6700HQ, 8GB RAM, GTX 960M. I bought her Terraria, she loves it so far. She's content with playing around 30-40 FPS, but I know her laptop can do better, and it should. It's brand new, and when checking benchmarks (on YouTube for example) people are playing BF1, The Division, SW:BF etc. at 40-60+ fps. So nobody could possibly tell me her laptop can't handle Terraria. She's getting sub 60 FPS even on low settings (changing from low-high or vice versa doesn't impact performance as much). I know I shouldn't be expecting much from a laptop, but honestly, 19-45 fps? That's just a joke. My old laptop (i5 3230M Nvidia GT 710M) used to run Terraria on highest settings at 60fps steady. She has all the requirements for the game. (.net etc) I don't want her (and me) to feel scammed with a laptop that's supposed to have the performance but isn't delivering it for some reason. What I tried: - Tinkering with the ROG software (not much to tinker with, it only affects the system when it's not connected to a charger) - Tinkering with Geforce Experience / Control panel - Updated Nvidia drivers to latest. I'm at a loss of what to do next. Any advice would be appreciated.
  7. Thank you both for your replies. I don't want anything that takes up as much space as my current PC, regrettably. How much would it cost me to build a half decent NAS? On another note; would it be possible to install a different NAS OS on my PersonalCloud device, so I can manage permissions?
  8. Hi! I'm a total rookie at servers and NAS. I, without any prior knowledge, gave in to the sales guy's talk and bought myself a Seagate Personal Cloud. I wanted to use it to stream media anywhere in the world, preferably using Plex. However, I totally forgot that Plex requires a CPU with a passmark of at least 1000+ (for 720p 4mbps) to transcode media properly. Of course, this consumer grade cloud storage tool, does have the option to install the Plex app on its Linux system, but doesn't have the processing power to transcode media. Now, I'm looking to refund my purchase as I wasn't well informed, and to buy a new NAS device with enough processing power to run a Plex Media Server properly. I would like it to be somewhat compact. If it supports switching HDD's, I would like that too. Doesn't matter if it supports 3,5 inch or 2,5 inch SATA drives, but I have a supply of the latter due to old laptops. To summarize: I would like to replace my Seagate Personal Cloud with a NAS device capable of running a Plex Media Server, with the processing power to transcode media to at least 720p 4mbps. Alternatively: I would like to be able to play all of my media files (I have movies and TV shows on the cloud) on my mobile device while out of home, or simply be able to leave my computer off and use the cloud to cast media to my chromecast. A question: Is there any way to change the entire OS of the NAS to something more compatible with my wishes? All I want is to be able to play my video files on my mobile device (as would my friends and girlfriend, Android/iOS), and cast the media to our TV's without having to go through the trouble of having to transcode the files. On Android, I was able to play most of the files through the Seagate Media app on my Chromecast device without any problems or buffering. Some video types aren't supported by our phone's native players, but should that pose a problem for casting the videos to our Chromecasts? Thank you for reading this far if you have. Mild Seagate rant:
  9. I posted a thread a few days ago as well, about experiencing crashes ever since this update was installed: Windows Update KB31503513. The day after this update was installed (it was first installed on 02-05) I'd been experiencing crashes. First, I thought it was my new GPU, however, this GPU (RX 580) has been working with no issues whatsoever for the week I've had it prior to the crashes. Now, the same update was installed again on 05-05, and I've been experiencing crashes again since yesterday. The only way I'm avoiding these crashes now seems to be having to check whether this update has been installed again and then removing it. Between me removing the update for the first time earlier this week, and yesterday, I haven't had any crashes, until the update was installed again. What I've done to try to fix this: Earlier this week: - Used DDU to uninstall GPU drivers and reinstall new ones. - Tested with different games - Reseated the GPU Yesterday: - Ran sfc /scannow; no errors or faulty files to be replaced. I wanted to run memtest86, but I'm fairly sure it's not the ram; it's the update. I will attach the minidump files in this post. Please, I would like to resolve this problem as soon as possible. I need my PC for my exams (I'm a senior in college) in June. 050317-32500-01.dmp 050317-38125-01.dmp 050617-39187-01.dmp 050317-30625-01.dmp
  10. It was the latest windows update, or so it seems. Been able to play for 20 minutes now; it used to crash before 10 minutes of playtime prior to uninstalling the latest update. This is the update that caused it: Windows 10 version 1607 (KB3150513) (May 2nd 2017)
  11. This time e1d65x64.sys caused the crash. Seems to be the Intel gigabit adapter. Do you think it could be yesterday's Windows update that causes the crashes?
  12. Tried that. What happened: As it was installing the new drivers, my screens lost signal, went on and off a few times (which is normal when installing gpu drivers). However, it then showed artifacts for a second or so, on both my monitors, for a couple of times. Then, my monitors went on standby, my keyboard lighting froze, and I was flicked out of the Discord call I was in.
  13. I didn't pay attention to the length of the beeps, sorry.. I'll try that. It just crashed again and gave me a "kmode" error. What failed: win32kfull.sys. Same thing with it restarting to standby monitors and no lighting on my mouse/keyboard.
  14. Hi! I recently upgraded my GPU from an R9 280X to an RX 580. Back then, when I tried booting my PC, it would simply leave my monitors on standby, with no lights coming on on my mouse and keyboard (which is what is supposed to happen if the PC boots, even without any display connections). I fixed that by reseating my GPU properly (the clip wasn't properly opened when I first seated it). My system has been working fine for the past week or so, since I upgraded. Today, I got the dreadful "System thread exception not handled" BSOD, along with three beeps after my PC shut down. Afterwards, it tried booting itself up again. I got the same thing as described before; standby monitors, no lighting on mouse/keyboard, etc. I forced my PC to shutdown (holding the power button), then rebooting it again. Lo and behold, it booted. At first, my main monitor was completely blue (with me being able to move the mouse around freely), where the login screen should be. After waiting patiently for 20-30 seconds, it showed me the login screen. Now, my PC works again, but I'm afraid it'll happen again. Could I do something to prevent this from happening again? Thanks.
  15. My steam profile. Anyone's welcome to add me, as long as you're chill to play with.
  16. @TheRandomness @chris76816 Thank you for the suggestion. These are my new results. Here is the comparison. The highest score is after using DDU to remove my drivers (GPU#000 was R9 200 series) and reinstalling drivers for my RX 580. Thank you for the suggestion. It didn't improve by a landslide, but I'm still happy to see some improvements, even if every result differs.
  17. Thank you. I'll give this a shot. Should I remove all and any drivers, then reinstall drivers for my RX 580?
  18. Could this be an issue? I'm truly bummed about the performance compared to my old R9 280X, since I did drop ~280 euros to upgrade..
  19. I recently upgraded from a Sapphire R9 280X Dual-X 3GB to a Sapphire RX 580 Pulse 8GB. These are my card's scores. Am I wrong for expecting a better score out of this card? This test was on Firestrike DX11. I did a test on DX12, and that score resulted in around 4000-4100. I'm starting to think my decision to upgrade was wrong.. 3DMark does not recognize my card. Is that because it's still fairly new? I didn't remove my old drivers after swapping cards. I simply installed Crimson and let it update my drivers to the latest version. Is something wrong with my card, or am I just expecting too much?
  20. I'm looking for silent keyswitches for my Razer Blackwidow Chroma, if that's even possible. I'm a very fast typer (about 145wpm), and when I'm typing while being on Discord with friends it sounds like I'm smashing my keyboard furiously as if I'm trying to hack into Donald Trump's launch codes. Also doesn't help that I'm using a Blue Yeti as my microphone, which is fairly close to my keyboard. I know a mechanical keyboard doesn't go well with recording sound/voice chat, but if there's any way to make it more silent I would appreciate any suggestions.
  21. If you have the patience, save up until you can buy a 1080 Ti. That'll set you for years to come, and probably handle 4K gaming decently as well.
  22. Take a look at Steelseries Apex series. They might fit the bill. Personally have no experience with Steelseries, but as I'm using a Razer Blackwidow Chroma which is out of your price range I can't recommend that one.
  23. Looking for people to play on EU servers with me. I'm a 22 year old student (M), game casually but competitively too. Easygoing, joke around often, and generally click with anyone as long as they're friendly too. I'm fairly good at PUBG, or so I would like to think. My main "role" would be to initially spot people, devise strategies and pick people off one by one. Currently at work, but if you are interested, leave a reply and I'll get to you when I get home in ~6 hours. My timezone is GMT+1 or CEST (Amsterdam).
