cifroes got a reaction from RevGAM in Peerless Assassin 120 PWM fans not working as PWM?
what software do you recommend to see fan speeds and adjust them?

I'm very much suspecting of a faulty fan, I'll see if I can try it out with other fans and see if it's mobo or fan problem.  The cooler comes with 2 fans and it also seem it's only 1 fan having this issue!

it's using the cpu temp, I think I can't actually change that.
A static fan speed of 20,50 or 100% results in the same thing: 1500rpm.

I tried connecting a noctua fan to the CPU header and it seems to perform correctly, stopping the fan, reducing the rpm and all that. Faulty fans?

Thank you very much for your suggestions, I also always had that doubt about the SE. I'll investigate if the PA120SE will fit properly with my RAM and all of that.
The SE is actually more expensive today (prices float a lot) so today it's PA120 -42€   PA120 SE - 47€. I would probably just get the cheaper one at the time.

Problem with noctua is it's price tag. It's 100€. For 100€ I don't buy my intended 5800x but the 5800x3d which would be a great upgrade 😄

Although I do have some coupons and partner discounts so my final prices would be:
    noctua D12L - 52€
    PA 120 - 34€

    thanks again for great feedback

That is incorrect. The SE has a somewhat different design, including dimensions, fewer fins

    Peerless Assassin 120 SE
    L125 mm x W110 mm x H155 mm
    Weight:730g
    Peerless Assassin 120
    L125 mm x W135 mm x H157 mm
    Weight:750g
    No cover
Ultimately, though, aside for fitting different mobo/RAM configs, and the SE being lighter, there shouldn't be any significant performance differences.

I mean theyll cool better than either of the two so you can just lower the fan speed and get the same temps with less noise

And go for the se theres no diff between the regular and se aside from aesthetics and i dont see a reason to pay 13€ for some random aesthetic you wont notice

Anything but the crappiest coolers will be quiet when not under load. But even under load, it's not that difficult to keep a 5800X from thermal throttling. My SFF build achieves that with an NH-L9a, which is significantly less capable than either of your options. Based on that, both of your suggestions are more than capable of keeping the CPU temps under control, and it will be super quiet when not under load.

edit: You may need to limit or disable PBO, or slightly undervolt if you want it to be quiet even under load. If your definition of quiet is "not audible in an empty, rural library", as opposed to "rarely noticeable in a typical flat", then you may need to disable PBO even with the D12L.

Dont be so glued to noctua and get yourself a peerless assassin/phantom spirit 120 which will annihilate both of those overpriced noctuas, equivalent to a d15 in performance so you can turn down the fans and now its quieter than both while being alot cheaper

You didn't test the second so I don't know which model to get. Also, can they fit one inside the other and then foil? Also, can you test with the router turned off?

CL16 and CL15 at those respective speeds are effectively the same latency. Get the faster memory as GPUs prefer bandwidth over latency because they're geared to crunching a ton of data at once.

cifroes reacted to LogicalDrm in Noctua case fan with low noise adaptor: is that needed or use mobo control?
If you get satisfactory DC control with that mpbo, then there's no need to use them. But some mobos can't lower power under 60% (MSI for example), so you might want to lower those speeds even further.

The adapters cap the fan speed and are only good if you otherwise don't have any fan control or if the fan control you have sucks. If you can, just use the motherboard without adapters.

The Silencio is a case for Micro ATX, or Mini ITX. The MSI B450M PRO-VDH is a Micro ATX board so it should be fine.

In terms of the GPU, CoolerMaster's site lists the "Maximum compatibility - VGA Card Length" as 355 mm /14.0 inches. The Asus ROG Strix Radeon™ RX 5700 OC, is 305 mm ( 12 inches) long, so it should fit just fine. The GPU will clear the heat sink, that's pretty much always the case with modern boards, those heat sinks just aren't tall enough under 99% of cases to pose an issue.

Also of note, you can fit a tower cooler up to 155 mm (6.1 inches) tall.

Just check if your PSU is fit for the GPU too.

If you look it up you can see that 1660Super, rx5500 and 1660Ti do have a significantly lower tdp than the other 3 cards mentioned. While usually none of the cards mentioned should be noisy as long as your not using their potential, the rtx 2060 and rx5700(xt) are getting hot and do overheat in certain conditions and setups when under load.

cifroes got a reaction from Ben17 in Quietest GPU for a 400€ budget?
I was thinking of getting an 1660 Super but my budget got a bit increased and now I can pay around 400€ or a bit more but I want a GPU that is not extremely loud since that bothers me very much.

Contenders in my country, for this budget, are 1660 Super, 1660 Ti, RTX 2060, 2060 Super, AMD 5700XT, 5700, 5500 XT.

I clearly understand the difference in performance between all of those, what I need is some advice on noise levels because I prefer to trim down a bit on game quality than to get a huge, noisy GPU that gets me mad when I'm not playing which is 80% of my time on the computer

    Any advice you can give?
