We had this problem in work a few years ago, so we just started disabling it before giving the laptops to users.  They can't turn it back on without admin creds so issue solved.

One thing MS should be doing, and I am sure they are not is with modern standby if it does wake up they should only use the e-cores on these modern chips and even then rate limit the clock speeds to be ultra low. There is no reason the device should get even close to warm even if it does way up when the lid without a screen attached it should be in an ultra low power mode (single core limited to the cpu min clock speed... after all that is all you need to download an update).

The thing is though, some of us put our laptops to sleep not necessarily because we can't sit through 5-10 seconds of booting up. A lot of us put it to sleep because we want to keep our session in the exact state it was in so that we can quickly resume work when we go back to use the machine.

It's because of this, and the mess with Modern Standby, that I pretty much have to set the system to hibernate when closing the lid, which seems to be the "ideal compromise" at this point. Didn't really have to think much about that with my MacBook Pro, but it's not infallible as well, which is why they did the thing Microsoft somehow undid, which is to allow the user to easily tweak the sleep behavior.

My point still stands though. This is something Microsoft needs to fix, even if it's something simple as allowing the user to easily tweak the sleep behavior.

Just checked my Lenovo P1 and neither S1, S2 nor S0 are supported. Only S3 is and Hibernate. I guess this is due to the relatively old Xeon E-2176M.
Edit: I never experienced this tho, as I always shut down my notebooks.

Word on the street is that the DoD is going to use exascale supercomputers with hardware like this (Probably Intel's Aurora & AMD's Frontier) to simulate nuclear missile failure scenarios in extreme detail to inform the appropriate upgrades and maintenance efforts.

I doubt Russia has nothing like this to work on their nukes. China's maybe, but they're probably still playing catch-up. Japan is certainly not going to lend Fugaku to either of them.

Calling nVidia's bluff - because Jensen's wallet came first when they were more than happy to jack up the price of gaming cards that ended up in mining rigs because they couldn't be bothered nerfing GeForce drivers to not be compatible with mining before things all went crazy. These CMP SKU's would make (more) sense if gaming cards sucked at mining, except they don't. There's also no rationale behind the $5K pricing - sell these CMP cards for $1000 tops and I guarantee the gaming GPU shortage would fix itself in a matter of months, but no, Jensen is a greedy mongrel who wants to make himself rich while the gaming crowd suffers.

If these cards were to have a purpose they are far too late in the game and are simply overpriced for their application. The volatility of mining makes the ROI and resale on these incredibly sketchy. If mining were as stable as other GPGPU applications it would be less of a question.

Speaking of other applications - why you didn't try F@H??? I'm guessing it would outperform a 3090 on PPD assuming the folks at F@H add the device to their database.

You guys should get your hands on the A6000 and do a video - those cards CAN be used for gaming and can also be stacked making them ideal for use in a high-end workstation/gaming mixed-use system.

My favorite point, paraphrased a little

That's what bugs me about all these distros, they work great for a little bit then divergence happens and it all goes to hell. Cleanup attempts happen, circular repeat this or worse create a new distro!

Linux is supposed to be modular and customizable, many many distros just are not needed. What's needed is robust and easy ways to make those customizations and choices on a well maintained and supported platform.

Minimum viable product concept seems to get a little lost in the Linux Desktop distro world, and I don't mean minimum viable in terms of quality I mean in terms of included features and dependencies. Uniqueness and non-standard is the death sentence of maintainability and stability.

It looks like Intel is aiming to offer TSMC/Samsung/GloFlo-style foundry capacity to clients wanting orders of custom x86 and RISC processors by 2023 and maybe even FPGA, MIPS, Power, analog, and other kinds of architectures later on.

I could as well. Apple may be the sort that prefers to control its own destiny where it can, but it might not want to burn bridges, either.

I mainly love the story arc this would represent. Back in the 1990s and early 2000s, Apple was the underdog trying to fight the Wintel monopoly. Apple had to concede to an ugly reality and depend on Intel chips for over a decade... but during that time, Apple grew into a beast while Intel was starting to wither away as it got complacent. Now, the roles are reversed and Intel is both fighting a negative perception of its chips while courting the possibility that it might be a contract manufacturer for Apple.

It's basically a decades-long lesson in why corporate hubris (that is, the assumption your company will reign supreme) is so dangerous.

It did happen earlier, but didn't go anywhere. To my understanding, Intel had their own tools and it was too difficult for outside parties to use those tools to make their designs. My understanding is for the newly announced offering, Intel will be supporting wider industry standard packages.

Another data point: China was talking about building new 28nm fabs so they can have more local supply under their control. To PC tech, this might sound ancient, but even today it can still be used for a lot of applications.

Fortunately, lots of processes prefer a higher nanometer because of the cheaper cost like car electronics, micro controllers, etc. These processes don't need to have state of the art efficiency and are still experiencing a shortage currently because all of the world's fabs are running at 100% capacity.
