  1. Hi there! I do not know if this should go into the O.S. or Programs sections but anyhow; Before I bummrush into a tutorial that breaks something that I have no idea how to fix I want to get the communities recommendations for a newb friendly tutorial on how I can remote into a windows 10 computer that is in the same room as me. The reason being that I want to use ZBrush ,Maya, and Photoshop on the W10 computer while using Blender, Substance Painter, and Krita on the Linux computer and being able to quickly open and copy/paste project files and folders without having to constantly move from one PC to the other. Having it all in separate Windows on the desktop. The reason that I do not use a virtual machine is that in the past I have had licensing software for various products break or just not work to begin with. I also do not use a KVM switch as neither my Cintiq nor 3D Mouse work with it. Thanks!
  2. Well... I have good news and bad news! The good news: After 3 harrowing hours I managed to replace the thermal pads in my GPU, dropping the memory temps to a staggering 80 degrees!!! The bad news, even with my GPU powerlimited to 300 watts my GPU sits at 82 degrees under full load, in Blender 3D, with a 98-100 degree hotspot! My clock speeds are around 100-150mhz lower on average but remaining steady in the 1800mhz ballpark. The temps do drop in a few seconds back to 50 degrees across the board when the card returns to idle but this has me nerve wracked, especially after how I nearly tore 2 of the fan headers off while removing the cables! For this reason, I am terrified that I will have to repaste the GPU (I used the 5 point method with Noctua thermal paste). Are these temps safe or am I boned until I redo the thermal paste? P.S. All three fans are spinning normally. EDIT: Quick update, I took the side panel of my PC off and suddenly the temps dropped to 78 and 95 degrees for the GPU and Hot Spot respectively, almost immediately. I wonder if I accidentally created an airflow issue in my case, oh well. I will have to leave it for after work to figure out.
  3. Just a quick update, I installed a couple of 140mm fans in the top of my case and it dropped my CPU temps to 68 degrees consistent! Now I just need to find out in the BIOS why they are running at 80-100%, not all of the time but most of the time.
  4. Hi there! Is powerlimiting my 3090 to 300 watts enough to prevent my VRAM from giving up the ghost early as I cannot check their temperatures in Windows since I get a 3 second black screen that instantly crashes any 3D accelerated programs when the temps get near or over 100 degrees regardless of the presence of a powerlimit in Afterburner (I have seen it get up to 110 degrees before the powerlimit!!!). The power limit does indeed drop temperatures but Windows always black screens before I can find out just how hot it can get. I notice no such behavior in PopOS which runs stably whether or not I am powerlimiting but I cannot check VRAM temps in Linux to see just how effective it really is. If not then I am going to have to do the dreaded Thermalpad replacement with 0 experience. P.S. I am not interested in the windows black screening as I do not do any intense 3D work on that dual boot and nothing I have tried, short of reinstalling the O.S., has worked to fix it for the simple task of benchmarking my card to monitor VRAM temps. Thanks in advance for any help offered.
  5. Without the bridge he cannot pool VRAM so software like Redshift 3D or Blender Cycles can only use each card's 24GB instead of a collective 48GB. OT: I could have sworn I saw a diagram of 5 space NVLINK bridge from... EVGA I think when I was looking at spacing for my own motherboard but I cannot find the article that hosted the image anymore, sorry.
  6. Well, this is interesting. It fit perfectly in my case but even with the side panel fan that I had to remove, in order to make the cooler fit, added to said cooler I was pushing the high 80s when the H100i (that I was under the impression was inferior from reviews comparing it to 240mm radiators) was able to keep it below 78 degrees on all cores. This is without the low RPM adapter and the fans set to spool up to 100% at 65 degrees. I also have 5 intake and 1 exhaust fan set to respond likewise to the CPU temperature. Fortunately I discovered that the 1.29v I was keeping my CPU at was entirely unnecessary, a holdover from when I was trying to achieve a stable 4.5GHZ. I have since dropped down to 1.21v after 1.25 was perfectly stable (but still a little hot) and 1.2 caused a reboot half-way through the Victor Benchmark. I will have to check my thermal compound as the core temps are all over the place (70-78) but I used a healthy pea sized dollop in the center as I usually do. Damn, computer just restarted after about 10 minutes into the benchmark, giving 1.22 volts a try! EDIT: I might also add a couple of Venturi HF-14 to the top of the case to pull in some air directly towards the cooler since my PC is not that loud to begin with and the 3090 dumps a tonne of heat.
  7. I ended up getting the NH-D15s which comes with only one fan but I was needing to take a fan off the side of the case anyways to make room for the cooler so now I can add it as a second fan to the heatsink! I will let you guys know how it goes.
  8. Hi there. I brought up this issue a while ago in another thread but I had thought it corrected itself but nope! The pump on my 6 year old H100i is going and I want to go back to air-cooling without compromising my overclock before said pump gives up the ghost. Right now it is cooling a 5960x OCed to 4.4GHZ @ 1.29v, it was stable at 4.5GHZ @ 1.3v but the H100i could not reign-in the temperatures which would shoot over 80 degrees. Like it says in the title, I do not want it to cover the first PCIE slot on my Asus Rampage V due to the spacing of the components already inside of the case (Corsair Vengeance C70) leaving no room for rearrangements but plenty of height. Also, the card in the first slot is a Gigabyte Aorus Master RTX 3090 so it has a bit of girth out the back end, complicating things even more. I could avoid this by going with a 120mm cooler like the Noctua NH-U12A or going cheaper and getting a Scythe Ninja 5 and replacing the fans with Noctua Industrial 120mm but would that be enough for my overclock? I want to keep this under 150 CAD. Thank you for any input anyone has!

  10. I am no expert here but I can see them doing 3-4 things: 1. Hiring a team of lawyers and engineers to scour the wording of the bill to exploit each and every loophole they can find. 2. Designing their devices to be as obtuse, through both hardware and software, to be as user unserviceable as possible while remaining within the law. 3. Running a misinformation campaign denouncing the bill. 4. Budgeting a massive lobbying initiative to combat the bill in government. The worst part is that they will be far, far from alone in this endeavor.
  11. Hello there, this should be a quick one. I have noticed the occasional price drop of 3090s on some websites and I want to pounce on the first RTX 3090 (regardless of brand) I can find within a couple hundred dollars of MSRP to pair up with my Gigabyte RTX 3090 Aorus Master for rendering in Blender Cycles and Redshift but I remember hearing some hearsay about the placement of some 3090 cards NVLink not lining up with each other between brands. Obviously the height difference between some cards is just plainly visible but I have read of a couple instances of people mixing cards from different brands of similar height and finding that the NVLink connecters could be offset by a few millimeters. I have no idea if there is any truth to this or if it is just patently false so if anyone could put my mind at ease that would be immensely appreciated. Thanks!
  12. Not trying to hijack the thread but it feels kinda redundant making a new one as the pump in my own h100i I bought in 2015 myself is making some noises. I am running a 5960x @4.5GHZ with 1.29 volts and it never goes above 80 degrees but I am worried that the strain is finally getting to it and it will go any day now. I am thinking about replacing it with an air cooler if it does but I am worried that any of the top of the range coolers will cut off the first PCI slot of my Asus Rampage V Extreme 3.1 which would screw up the spacing that would allow me to NVLINK a second RTX 3090 when supplies and prices normalize. Stupid displacement maps, eating all mah VRAM. I know that this is the case with the NHD15, does anyone know of a competing air-cooler that is a little narrower so that it will fit my Gigabyte Aorus Master 3090 with its backplate or will I just have to invest in another AIO?

At the moment my i5 Surface Pro 5 is on its last legs as it is having all sorts of hardware issues and so I have decided to upgrade and leave that awful N Trig screen digitizer technology behind but it has been far, far from simple. For starters, most 2 in 1s (and tablets) use N Trig technology, which if you have ever tried to draw with one, you would know creates jagged artifacts. Secondly, the ones that seem to meet my Stylus needs are either under-powered, have build quality issues, or are expensive A.F. (looking at you Wacom) so I am genuinely overwhelmed and stumped and am hoping the community can dredge up something. What I Need: Windows AES 2.0 or Wacom EMR for full pen tilt functionality and minimal jitter. Quad Core Around 1 TFLOP of integrated or dedicated graphics card performance 16GB of RAM buuuuuut I might suffer 8 if all the other specs are top-notch Replaceable storage AND battery What I am using it for: Digital sketching and painting in Krita Light to Moderate 3D modeling and 2D/3D hybrid animation in Blender Sculpting in Zbrush Mind you, I do not mind buying second hand as long as the item is not more than 2-3 years old and less than 2500 CAD before taxes. A couple of devices that I keep coming back to are the Spectre x360 14 as a fully kitted out, used one, can sometimes be found for about 1500 CAD on Ebay and meets all of my hardware needs but it still uses that abysmal N Trig, even worse than my 4 year old Surface Pro. And the Yoga c940 15 which can be found used for almost a thousand dollars more, but between the GTX 1650 Max Q and i9 processor, kicks ass however I keeps hearing numerous anecdotes over poor build quality resulting in premature failure of components. Also, despite supporting and coming with an AES 2.0 stylus it lacks tilt and most after-market pens I have heard have even worse jitter and the one pen I heard that is near perfect appears impossible to order in Canada from Lenovo (The Lenovo Pen Pro).
  14. Unfortunately none of this addresses my concerns with the motherboard itself. I already know AMD is the superior path* but is the Asrock Phantom Gaming really such a pita, like I read, when it comes to stability, build quality, and TB3 performance that the shortcomings of Intel are overshadowed by giving me a more stable experience? I need to lug this thing around to supplement my laptop until I become proficient in Linux as W10s quirks make it increasingly frustrating to use for 3D rendering but I also want to be able to double my rendering horsepower when I bring it home by plugging in an eGPU and it will do me no good if the flipping thing keeps cutting out and crashing my render. Ultimately: Are the bad things I have read about the Asrock x570 Phantom Gaming the norm and thus necessitating an Intel route at the cost of all of its shortcoming or are the problems just blown out of proportion?

I made a thread somewhat similar to this a couple of months ago (so expect some Deja-vu) but circumstances changed and now I have a clearer goal and more funds to work with. TL;DR Versions: My research points to the MSI MEG Z490I UNIFY being the more stable platform with superior TB3 performance (for adding an external GPU enclosure when not lugging it around) and networking but does the cost of PCIe GEN 3 limiting storage and GPU performance with a more limited CPU upgrade path make the less positively reviewed (and apparently more buggy with Linux) ASRock X570 PHANTOM GAMING a smarter decision? Long Version: Right now I am looking at building a Linux based mini-itx workstation around a 3080ti or 3090 (if the former does not pan out) with the intent to initially use it as an external GPU enclosure for rendering 3D animations from my laptop and learn Linux on it at the same time (which you cannot do on a dedicated external enclosure) so that I may finally transition away from Windows. I want to start off with a cheaper but still decent CPU, as it is not that important when GPU rendering, and upgrade down the line as I transition it into my main workstation. The main thing is that I cannot decide if I should go with AMD or Intel for a variety of reasons. My main concerns between the two platforms are stability as well as strong Thunderbolt 3 functionality in Linux in a portable chassis to lug to and fro from the workshop. Ironically, I want TB3 to add a second GPU for when I take the damn thing home and want to double my rendering horsepower, how meta! Now, AMD or Intel. AMD: ASRock X570 PHANTOM GAMING + Ryzen 3600 Pros: PCIe Gen 4 Much more powerful CPUs with a very clear upgrade path over the 3600 Much faster M.2 storage options Cons: (mostly hearsay) Lackluster build quality. Sketchy TB3 stability and compatibility in Linux that may require some tinkering with the O.S. itself. A large batch of duds recently according to reviews on a couple of sites. No front panel USB C support for my external drives. The cons point to stability and quality issues that could spell trouble when I have the system burning rubber, especially in the thunderbolt cuts out which would crash my renders. Intel: MSI MEG Z490I UNIFY + i5 10400f Pros: Great build quality. Good TB3 support under most conditions. Front panel USB C header. 2.5G Ethernet making transfers between my laptop and the workstation* faster. Cons: PCIe Gen 3. Much more limited upgrade path. Slower Storage. In addition to weaker CPUs, the lack of PCIe Gen 4 creates two bottlenecks that will compound each other in the form of storage transfer speeds as well as getting large scene files uploaded to the GPU through the PCIe slot.   16. The problem is that I have never had a good time selling my computer stuff to anyone other than family, in person or online. I have asked some people I know if they are interested but have gotten only vague answers. Furthermore, I am only interested in getting a new system if it has thunderbolt3 but am limited to either a mini-itx board or expensive AF Threadripper motherboard with AMD and I do not need the processor speed to justify the price of the latter. I have heard some very hit or miss reports on AICs for AMD motherboards with headers, I have even seen some claims that the Gigabyte Titan Ridge does not need a header to work but overall I want to avoid them because they seem spotty at best. What the future may hold, I have no clue as I have yet to see what board venders have in store for the next generation of Ryzen but given the low adoption rate at the moment I am not holding my breath but am still hoping to be surprised. I have no idea what is going on over at Intel right now, I have not kept up with them in a long time and just spitballed a build without doing proper research hoping to achieve a decent price to features range. P.S. It may seem petty that I am obsessing over TB3 but I already have a few devices (such as the Cintiq HD16) that are much more convenient to use with TB3 and since I want to transition over to the desktop from my laptop as I learn Linux I want to have that convenience move with me. Something that I am willing to sacrifice with the vastly cheaper upgrade to a 6950x which if I can overclock to over 4GHZ I could come close to the single-core performance of the 8850H in my laptop that has not left me wanting in either Zbrush or Substance Painter during heavy CPU operations. Problem is that I will hit the limit of what the system can provide. If I was confident that I could sell most of my previous hardware and not tear my hair out with low-ballers, non-stop messaging, insults, postage screwing up my shipment in the computer, etc I would be far more receptive to the idea of building a new system but I do not believe that I would have a very smooth time. I was already planning on selling my old w9100, I guess I could use it as a litmus test but I have little confidence.
  17. What a weird title. Hello there LTT forums! I need some help here and I am sure that I probably know what the answer is already but I feel the need to have someone slap me in the face with some hard, scaly, fishy truth. At least Sea Bass sized, no Lake Sturgeons!!! Here is the TL;DR version: Can I overclock either a 5960x or 6950x for 255 and 430 dollars CAD respectively to compete with a Ryzen 7 3700x and keep my old workstation relevant and also capable of handling 2 top of the line RTX cards for productivity purposes? The long, did read version: After deciding that an eGPU for my laptop did not meet my needs I tried pricing out a brand new 3D GPU rendernode that could support 2 RTX 3080 20GB or 2 RTX 3090s NVLinked together that would also double as a platform for practicing Linux in order to transition over to it as my primary workstation. Unfortunately I could not make it work without sending the price out of control but decided to sacrifice my want/need of Thunderbolt3 for the cost savings of upgrading my former workstation/current rendernode with a watercooled 5930K OCed to 4.2GHZ for either a 5960x for 255 CAD or a slightly damaged but working 6950x for 430 CAD plus shipping. If I were to add a large m.2 ssd and 6950x I would be paying less than 800 dollars compared to the 2000-2200 dollars I would be paying for a brand new AMD or Intel platform with all of the features and I/O I wanted and needed respectively. Before the price of the two cards of course. The used and cosmetically damaged 6950x costs around the same as a new Ryzen 7 3700x but seems to have 25% less performance per core ( https://nanoreview.net/en/cpu-list/cinebench-r20-scores ) but nearly identical multicore score. If I can overclock all of the cores to 4GHZ on my Asus Rampage V USB 3.1 I could come close to the multicore score of the AMD chip in Cinebench r15 (which it loses to otherwise for some reason) at the cost of much more heat and a higher power-draw. If I go with the much cheaper and fully intact 5960x I could potentially overclock it to 4.3-4.5GHZ and close the single-core gap even more with less power-draw but sacrifice the multicore performance. My intent is to use it firstly as a rendernode as well as a remote GPU accelerator over a 10GB network for my workstation laptop but eventually transition back over to it as I become more familiar with Linux/CentOS. My software is primarily Maya, Redshift, Blender, Zbrush (can be finagled to run well on Linux), and Substance Painter. A mix of programs that take advantage of single and multicore performance depending upon what I am doing. This is the 6950x (please do not scalp me), assuming all of the chips have similar damage would this be a deal-breaker?   18. I took a look at processor prices and the cheapest 1600 I could find is 185 dollars CAD plus 20 dollars S/H on ebay. I forgot to check if it was international which means added border fees. I think I will stick with the 2200g for now as I will not be gaming with it. Mostly 3D modling and sculpting which is mainly single threaded. The more intensive ZBrush and Maya Fluids operations are where the extra threads will be thrown this summer. As for the case size, length and width are my main concern as if it any bigger there then it would not fit in any of my bags. I might be able to squeeze an inch higher but not in any other direction. I will take a look at the cases but I am doing this all on a phone right now and it is super awkward and sluggish for me. I still need to look at the CPU coolers though.
  19. I will keep that all in mind. I do want want to overspend on the cpu since I intend to replace it this summer but if the prices are as low as you say they are then I will take a better look around. Might even check out the used market. As for the cooler, I will check out your suggestion. It might seem counterintuitive to go for a heavier one but if I can somehow brace it against the top of the case without interfering with the fan or airflow then it would likely be best for the health of the motherboard when traveling.

I will be putting my Titan XM into it, that is why I asked about the GPU support brace that comes in the 202 and if it is good enough to prevent warping when transporting (also why I am getting such a large PSU). I will also take a peak at those ssds but I need fast ones for caching when GPU rendering. The HDD is just for long-term storage and backup.
  21. Hello there. My second forum post in the last couple of days, I am becoming active, hehe. I am going to be doing a SFF workstation build with the intent of hot-desking and the Node 202 seems to be the best case for me but I have a few questions first. Mind you, I already measured and it will fit into my carry-on and motorcycle saddle-bags, I just need to know if it will survive. I do not intend to drop it or anything, only put it through what my Sager NP9150 survived over the last 6 years. The first is how good is the internal GPU support brace and will it be enough to keep the Titan XM I intend to put into it steady without warping it? Second, is the build quality sufficient enough that I can expect it to not warp when packed in tightly with clothes? Third, unrelated but can anyone think of a good quality keyboard with roughly the same width (14-15 inches) that has a full numpad? Lastly, less related to the case itself, will the low-profile Noctua CPU cooler be too heavy for the motherboard and risk damaging it if the case gets jostled? Should I add some sort of brace against the top of the case so that its weight is not being thrown around? That should be it. If anyone knows of a better case with the same or smaller dimensions that can fit everything on my PC Parts Picker list then feel free to share, thanks! P.S. I intend to replace the CPU with a Ryzen 3000 when they get released this summer but unfortunately I will be doing a lot of traveling so it is not something I can wait for right now. Most of what I will be doing is single threaded or lightly multi-threaded so I think I can get away with running such a low end processor for a few months. Also, the keyboard is just a stand-in.   22. Hello there. Not long ago I create a forum post inquiring as to which laptop to buy for 3D work but then re-evaluated my options and decided that it would be far more economical to go with a Node 202 build and a Wacom Cintiq Pro 16 for the same price (using an Old video card of mine instead of buying a new one)! To save on a tangle of wires when hot-desking I am hoping to run the Cintiq off of USB C video output. The problem is that I have no idea which Mini ITX motherboards support this feature, much less the ability to get the video output from the dedicated GPU itself!!! The only one I can find is the ASRock Z390 PHANTOM GAMING-ITX https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157854 but I would much prefer an AMD system due to the cheaper price of the motherboard and the future release support. My current plan is the get a cheap Ryzen 3 2200g right now then upgrade to their highest performing 65w CPU this summer with their next release. I might even get a 95w CPU if the performance is right, despite the risk of throttling. The stick in the mud of course is the video output. I cannot find an AMD Mini ITX motherboard with this feature and if no AMD motherboard supports it then hello cable jungle, again. Thanks! P.S.   23. I do not intend to render on the battery. I only need to setup shop in the various locations I have to set down at. A 15 inch laptop is a 15 inch laptop. It does not matter if it weighs 3 pounds or 10 pounds as long as I can fit it into the same satchel or motorcycle bags I already have. The MSI laptop does not overheat according the reviews I have read on it but the Sky X4C does when fully specced out (in the ballpark of 300-370 watts of combined CPU/GPU TDP) which is not my intention (it also does not help that the GPU and CPU share 2 heatpipes). I want to run it at a lower configuration and hope that I get the best performance without burning it out/throttling but the caveat is that all of the components have their individual drawbacks and I want a second opinion on each. I might make it seem like I have already made up my mind but in reality I am trying to create a spreadsheet on all of the configurations but I just keep adding an increasingly large plethora of criteria in the process and backtracking as I overwhelm and befuddle myself. I have been mulling over that option as Eurocom offers this service for nearly 200 dollars extra but does the liquid metal TIM not need to be replaced roughly every couple of years?
