if you were going for an iPhone the cheapest is the iPhone se, smaller size but still has the 6s internals. the 6s is decent too. And still has the headphone jack. I wouldn't got a 6 though, I still have one personally but it's just because I have it and haven't upgraded. I probably wouldn't buy a new one.

Also the iPhone 7 does have an included headphone adapter so you could use whatever you wanted with it.

    That's not what ricer means...

A ricer laptop would be more like an overpriced flashy Alienware with low end specs and then bragging it has SLI desktop 1080's inside.

i know it is some hardware problem with the port it self.  i think the person who owned this laptop before me had a child that played rough with the laptop because many of the keys on the keyboard were broken and some of the membranes were broken off as well.  the ethernet port is also i believe damaged because some routers it works and others it does not.  also if i just touch the cable it acts like i unplugged the cable and plugged it back in many times.   i think the port is just damaged.

Why today for this thread? Is there something about today's video that isn't a straight-up, back to basics tech review of a seriously f**king cool product?

What on earth is there to complain about, other than the TERRIBLE views on it compared to almost ANYTHING we've done lately?

watch the Linus video from last week about Air vs. AIO, they go over options using i7s.

Basically, a Noctua is about as good as a 240mm AIO I think was the conclusion

For rugged laptops the Panasonic Toughbook is pretty much the standard. They are expensive and can be configured with dual core with hyper threading i7 processors.

quad core processors in laptops aren't super common in most configurations aside from the higher end performance systems right now.

Since most adapters are inverters to DC its not exactly required to have a ground. Lots of adapters don't require one.

I happen to work in higher ed and have a little experience with these types of programs.

Gaussian can work on GPUs if needed, so you could build a rig similar to a mining rig for maximum power with a few GPUs. It's not a simple setup but it may be the best option. I think that would need to run in Linux, though. We have an HPC that runs things like this.

Chemcraft isn't optimized for GPUs, and unfortunately they don't provide a lot of information on how it runs or even what the minimum specs are. It is optimized for Windows though.

If you want to run both of these on one system I personally would recommend finding a used Workstation class system with a higher core count Xeon (6+ with hyper threading). I would expect that you'd need to upgrade the RAM and add an SSD for boot (most used workstations do not come with SSDs, though YMMV).

It may be possible to dual boot Windows and Linux, put a higher end video card in and run Gaussian on the GPU through Linux and Chemcraft on windows as needed.

i have a Z420 - though with an E5-1650 Xeon which is 6C/12T. I was able to install a better cooler on it. Used a Noctua NH9-DL as it was one of the few that fit. I got a second 92mm fan to replace the RAM fan it had.

Considering the price of the cables, and the number of them I have seen go bad the HDD cable would be my first guess.

I'm thinking that instead of one of the data traces being damaged it might be a power one.

every AIO is silent if there is nothing wrong with the pump, obviously you have to have a custom fan curve for the fans, the Arctic liquid freezer 120,240,360 are also well priced. But if he can fit a 280 rad he should also get a 280 one, the nzxt x62 stock fans are better than the corsair ones imo

RAID is not a backup, it protects you against drive failure, not other forms of data loss, like the house burning down, accidentally deleting them yourself, etc.
For the vast majority of home users RAID is completely pointless in fact, and they would be much better served by an external drive backup that they run on command or on a schedule.

The High Sierra beta supports any graphics card with current mac drivers. The nvidia 10 series cards do work, but Apple is working with AMD currently so that's what they advertised in the WWDC keynote. I know some people who have tested a few different cards. That being said, I would probably wait until High Sierra is released and see what eGPU enclosure is best for the price.

I use exFAT for all my externals because I frequently go between mac and windows, and use them for video editing. Every so often I hear someone say "exFAT is bad!" but I can't ever find any real proof. Anecdotally, it's been working fine for me for like.. 8 years or so? One of my hobbies is editing video, and another is testing encoding/transcoding settings between systems so i regularly write decent sized files to them.
