  1. Not everything has to be super quick, and my 8TB HDD was well below half that price (close to 1/3rd). I also bought it a couple years ago when an 8TB SSD would have cost me the price of a used vehicle. Why should I spend more for something that doesn't need to be fast? Different people have different use cases.
  2. HDD's are phased out? Maybe as boot drives, but they're still widely used as storage drives. I have three of them in my system alone. Until your NAS has a vulnerability that someone exploits and uses to access the rest of your network. Though the aforementioned VPN configuration (as @Chiyawa posted) would probably alleviate most of that concern. At that point, might as well spend every dime you have on lottery tickets. Either you'll be flat broke, or the law of averages will work in your favor and you'll end up winning the jackpot.
  3. So they basically took their ultra-wide monitor concept and stacked them vertically instead of horizontally.
  4. If the leak is correct, then you could run 2 x 64c ThreadRippers for a 128c / 256t system. And with an 8 channel (presumably 16 slot) memory configuration, assuming 256GB / slot, that's a max of 4TB of RAM. That is absolutely insane.....and I want one. I have no need for one, I have no use for one, I want it just because.
  5. I don't even care about the Coof (never did, to be honest), but this just sounds disgusting to me. I don't care how "hygienic" they make it, I would never willingly lick my screen. Reminds me of when I saw a discussion about a Kickstarter for reusable underwear (as in, underwear you wear repeatedly without washing). I'll take "Tech I'll never partake of" for $1,000, Alex.
  6. I never claimed it would be a good last resort gun, just that it could potentially be used as such. If the FTF issue were resolved, it would be a pretty potent little firearm if you're grappling with a bad guy. Sort of '.38 special' style weapon (though that would likely be a much better choice than this gun). Though, speaking of last resort guns, this could potentially be another choice: It might not penetrate that well, but hit someone in the face with it and they'd definitely feel it.
  7. I could potentially see it being a "last resort" gun. If you're under attack in close quarters, for example. Still, with the constant FTF issues, I wouldn't want to rely on it to save my life.
  8. Hey, are you reading my notes?! Stop stealing my ideas!
  9. I have one of those EP9's, bought direct and shipped to a local FFL. It's not super spectacular, but it's pretty decent for the price.
  10. Yeah, that's what I was going to test. I work at a computer store, not a large enterprise. We do both Home & Pro installs.
  11. I agree completely. I was just pointing out what was happening, not that it should be connected together. There is zero reason for them to disable the remote start from the key fob. If you ask me, it seems like engineers keep overcomplicating things. They want so hard to come out with the next big thing, that they just make it more convoluted than it needs to be. That's fine if it's limited to certain models, but eventually it makes its way down to even the most base models, which is why I stick to older vehicles.
  12. I'll test it again later today at work to see if it's changed, but the last time I tested it I was able to get a local account created by just being offline. Though I will admit that we haven't done much with 11 yet.
  13. If I want to be "social", I'll go see someone in person.
  14. This is why I never just "search" for something I don't understand. If I really want to know, I use another browser in private mode. You mean I can't have a phone with a built in nuclear reactor? What is this world coming to?! I hadn't seen that before. Thanks for posting that.
  15. I hear you. I have two vehicles, '93 and '98. I don't really want anything newer, just because of how integrated the computers are with controlling the vehicle. I prefer to be in control of the vehicle as much as humanly possible. I don't mind "dumb" assists like power steering, but I don't want the computer controlling my steering or anything else that doesn't involve simply making the engine run. It sounds preposterous, because it is. Unfortunately, it's true. If the car comes with this Remote Connect package, and you don't pay the subscription fee, they will disable your ability to remote start via a simple RF key fob. https://www.thedrive.com/news/43329/toyota-made-its-key-fob-remote-start-into-a-subscription-service
  16. It's the same procedure with 11 as it has been with 8/8.1/10. Disconnect from the internet until your account is created, then you can connect and update like usual. I know 10 has this annoying habit of prompting you to "finish your setup" about 3 days after install, which again requires disconnecting from the internet and clicking continue. I assume 11 has the same process built in. Otherwise, it works just fine. When we set up new computers at work for customers, we always go through those steps to create a local user account for them. I'll take the vulnerable nature of Android over the locked down platform that is iOS. If it's my phone/tablet, I want the freedom to do whatever I like with it. Yes, I know jailbreaking is a thing, but that has it's own set of issues, and doesn't resolve all of the problems with how buttoned up iOS is.
  17. I wonder how long it will be before someone releases a 'Never 11' tool? I've long told customers that they should wait a minimum of 6 months whenever a new OS comes out. Even still, you always have those who see an update available, and click on it without paying any attention to what it is. Hmm, interesting. Thankfully, the BIOS version for my board is F61 (also a Gigabyte board), and the version with Capsule BIOS support is F62d. Since I almost never install beta BIOS versions, I was able to avoid that. Let's see how long I can get away with it before I'll be forced to upgrade.
  18. Not only would I not ride in a fully automated vehicle, I don't even like to drive a car with an automatic transmission. Give me manual transmission and full control any day. Unless the vehicle is literally on a rail that can only go either forward or backward, I would not rely any man made program to control it over my own abilities.
  19. How is that a Chrome thing? Youtube itself gives you the option to block channels, you don't need a plugin for it. Actually, on second glance I guess they changed it to "Don't recommend channel", but it's the same end result.
  20. @AnonymousGuy might be coming on a little strong with his statements, but I agree with his general sentiment. LN2 OC'ing might be interesting for bragging rights, but it has absolutely nothing to do with everyday usage that 99.999% of users will care about.
  21. I still prefer Gigabyte motherboards, but they have been doing some really stupid things lately.
  22. And if you thought they were only going to milk it in the video game realm, you haven't seen the latest news. Skyrim: The Board Game.
  23. Reminds me of when I switched fully to XP Pro x64, back around 2005 or so. One of my favorite games at the time was Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (still the best Splinter Cell game to date, bar none), and it absolutely would not work due to the Starforce DRM. I posted on the Ubisoft forum and hounded support for weeks before giving up and "fixing it" myself. To be fair, while I'm loathe to compliment Epic Games as they currently are, back in the UT days they would put copy protection on the game for the first 2-3 weeks and then patch it out afterwards. That kind of copy protection mentality I can understand and get behind, because it's only meant to serve as a deterrent during the initial sales rush at launch.
  24. I've been pretty pleased with CoreTemp over the years. Just make sure you watch during install to avoid getting one of those free-to-play games installed with it (just have to uncheck a box). Other than that, it doesn't bug you about buying or try to shove ads at you in any way, and it seems reliable enough to me. No specific update for Alder Lake at this time (last update was in April), but it's worth trying.
