  1. Windows 10 Home - i7-8700 @ 3.20GHz - 16GB RAM - Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
  2. CP77 has never crashed my computer. I played a few months ago. I think my computer is 4 or 5 years old. It's not overheating and I dust it regularly. The crashing only happens with SOME games so it must be software related.
  3. I've been experiencing an issue where my computer hard freezes while I'm gaming. The game freezes, the monitor displays an unmoving screen wherever I was playing last, speakers emit a buzzing noise, and I can't get anything to respond. I have to hold the power button to force shutdown. It used to happen once every few months, so I wasn't very concerned before; however, it happened twice today within the span of a few hours. I've only had it happen during gaming, never during any other use (I work from home). I use my computer all day, everyday, and game for multiple hours everyday; so, I don't know what makes today special. I don't know if the type of game matters; but, I've only had the freeze happen with Slime Rancher, Subnautica, Dinkum and Genshin Impact. Both of the crashes today were with Genshin (I've been playing for over a month and never had an issue before today). I've played thousands of hours of Apex Legends, League of Legends, and never had a freeze with those games. I have hundreds of hours of Skyrim, The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, 7 Days to Die, The Sims 3, Grounded, and never had that happen with any of those games, either. I looked at the event viewer; but, it doesn't offer anything useful. The only thing that shows up is when I had to force shutdown. Is there anything I can do to stop the freezes?
  4. I have no idea why, but a few months ago, the time on my PC suddenly was off by 6 minutes or so. It errors when attempting to time sync and won't let me change the time zone. I didn't care until I found out that Windows licenses can fail a check with the activation server if the time is off, and remove the license. I have a prebuilt PC that's over 4 years old. I highly doubt the company would give me a license if I called them, and I doubt I even have the serial number. So, now I'm worried about losing my Windows license. Has anyone had this happen before?
  5. I hope it's okay that I ask this here. The company I work for has this ancient ID software. It uses a USB dongle as its security key. The software was installed on Windows 7, but is now being installed and moved to Windows 10. It seems to install just fine. In device manager, the USB dongle has the same name that it has on the Windows 7 machine; however, when attempting to open the software, it doesn't see the dongle, and refuses to open as a result. Has anyone had this type of problem with older software and found a solution?
  6. I have a samsung galaxy tablet with a type C adapter. I'm trying to find an adapter that will go into the type C connector that will both charge the device and provide an ethernet connection, through a single type C cable. I've tried a couple different models, but neither provide both functions. One of them charges, but the ethernet doesn't work, and the other, the ethernet works, but it doesn't charge the tablet. Does anyone know one that actually works?
  7. Is there a way to get Windows 10 to play video(s) for the screensaver? I was able to accomplish this on my old Windows 8 computer - if my memory is correct, by doing a folder slideshow and just having a video in there and it looped without issue. But, I can't get it to work with Windows 10.
  8. Before, I had no issues going into services and stopping services whenever I needed to. I have a slow internet connection, so I have to stop delivery optimization and windows update because they like to start running whenever I'm in the middle of an online gaming session, or they'll start in the morning and run literally all day long, hogging my bandwidth. This morning, I could change the service status fine. However, all of a sudden, I can't anymore. Everything is grayed out. It's Windows 10 home. Yes I'm the admin, and my account is the only account on the computer. I have not made any changes to this computer since the last time I was able to change the service status: haven't installed anything new, windows update was turned off last I was actually able to disable it. Now, I can't anymore. Delivery optimization is using the entirety of my bandwidth and I can't stop it. Windows Update is running while I'm trying to use my computer and I can't stop it.
  9. Still haven't found a way to stop this, or at least get it to finish faster so it'll stop causing me problems.
  10. I compared the settings on two different PC's (one where the software is functioning and one where it isn't). I couldn't find a difference between the settings. I had both admins and non admins log onto different PC's and the issue was always PC specific, didn't matter who was an admin and who wasn't.
  11. I have an interactive PDF: there are fields that can be filled out and check boxes. On a few PCs, it opens fine in Adobe Acrobat. On a few others, it opens with a popup saying "no error" and the PDF is only one page and completely blank. I have to use Adobe Acrobat because all my other free PDF viewers are either distorted - for example, the lines run together on one - or I can't fill out the fields. I have to do it this way because it's a form for a government agency. I've tried all the usual stuff: uninstalling, reinstalling, deleting all the program folders, running updates, admin vs. non-admin, etc. I can't figure out what's different. They're running Windows 7, same version, and same versions of Adobe Acrobat. Any ideas? Thank you,
  12. Sorry for taking so long to reply. I thought I figured out the issue... then I realized I hadn't... and I was basically compliant for a while, just giving in to the Microsoft overlords cuz I don't know what else to do. I swear, it purposely waits until I open a game to start doing this. A minute ago, I was doing dishes and nothing was happening. As soon as I opened my game, Delivery Optimization decided to start hogging the bandwidth. Windows Updates isn't running. The store isn't downloading anything. Rebooting doesn't work cuz it just starts doing it again. I have my active hours set to 6 AM to 11 PM. I don't know what it's doing or why and I can't make it stop. What's the point of UAC if your computer does things without your consent anyway? What's the point of administrators if your computer is going to act on it's own? As far as I'm concerned, my computer is MY slave, not the other way around. Great OS you got here Microsoft (-_-) Awesome monopoly. Is there anything I can do or do I have to just wait it out?
  13. My internet is really slow and despite all the measures I have taken, Windows 10 keeps doing random stuff that completely hogs my bandwidth. I set my connection to metered. I disabled the Windows Update service and the Background Intelligent Transfer service. But, I still randomly catch the Service Host using my bandwidth. It is right now, and has for over 30 minutes, and has crippled my connection and made it unusable.
  14. Thank you for your fast reply. Both plugged in and wireless are lost. The internet light goes red; but, I see the drop before the modem light changes since I always have a cmd ping open to google.com
  15. I was hoping someone who is more knowledgeable than me could tell me if this theory is sensible or a load of crap. I live in a rural area and CenturyLink's ADSL is all we can get. We get a 2MB download speed. Sharing that between four people is really difficult. Sharing that between two people isn't. So, I added a secondary connection to the house back in late August. That second connection has NEVER worked properly. It is the same speed as the other connection; but, basically, it randomly drops and I (almost always) have to reboot the modem to get it to come back. I wouldn't complain if it did this a couple times a week; but, it does it at least once a day, sometimes every hour, sometimes every 15 minutes. I can go hours with it unusable because of the drops. When I got the secondary added, the techs must have messed up the first connection, cause it started doing the same thing after the second was added... and this was a problem I never had before. I was able to get a tech to fix the first connection about a month after the secondary got added. However, dozens of techs later, the secondary is still not fixed. So, I've had this connection for six months and they still haven't fixed it. I tried a different modem, since a tech suggested that maybe it was dropping credentials. But, the other modem does the exact same thing. The most recent tech had these two theories... 1) He thinks it's possible the two connections are interfering with each other, which causes the drops. Back when both connections were dropping, they never dropped at the same time. It was completely random. However, like I said, the first connection got fixed and hasn't had the drop issues in months. 2) He said something about how, when a new account is created, a computer generates the account and does all the programming for it. His theory is that the computer messed up the configuration for my account. According to this tech, he has seen this issue a hundred times and no amount of human interaction will fix it. He recommended I cancel the account, wait a week, and then order a new account, and reuse all the same equipment and setup. I'm concerned about that because it means I'll have to repay setup fees and there's a chance it won't actually fix the problem. Plus, I'm worried they'll mess up the other connection... again... He said there isn't a way for them to do a clean flush without me full out canceling the account. So, I was hoping someone more educated in networking could tell me if his theory sounds like something I should actually consider attempting, or if he is making an excuse for CenturyLink's inability to fix this. Thanks in advance
