  1. Can we get a thread for smart home and home automation? Not sure if this is something others would be interested in. I am doing the build/buy a house thing so it's kind of an interest to me right now. Seeing as this is a tech forum I thought this is kind of a budding tech area that includes things like wifi outlets/switches, security systems, thermostats etc. It could also just be broadened out for "House Tech" kind of anything relating to technology for your home in general.
  2. Something also to keep in mind: compared to the 4790k the Ryzen 5 will be much more efficient due to technology that is 3 years newer alone. I would definitely compare the benchmarks but unless you are getting a used 4790k the Ryzen 5 line will be more cost efficient as well. What you intend to play will also make a huge difference as well. Many games still prefer a high clock speed and IPC to more cores. Unfortunately for the Ryzen lineup the CPU scaling just hasn't seemed to be there for a lot of games.
  3. Mostly for shorter cable runs I mean $20 every few years isn't as bad as having to run more cables through walls than a future buyer may mind dealing with, not to mention I would prefer to not have to pull another cable to my router every time I add a hard-line device to the network
  4. Who in their right minds would want to bring GlaDOS into their House
  5. To be honest this is kind of what I was planning on doing in my house once I move in. Switches are pretty stout anyways as there really isn't much to them.
  6. So I have always been intrigued by the idea of the "Smart Fridge." It would be nice to have my calendar and current weather easily accessible in one of the first places I go every morning. It also makes for a great place to make a grocery list that I can sync to my phone instead of spending 15min finding that damn note pad and then forgetting what I need to buy (or what I was doing in the first place), not to mention having to remember to bring it with you when going to the store. This is literally all I would want this for, so in short $5k for a fridge that has a tablet stuck to it is just plain stupid. My goal here is to find a way to replicate this experience using either a low end tablet or even a raspberi pi and a monitor to have this displaying in the kitchen. The thing is I don't really want or need a full android device, just something that can connect to google calendars, weather channel app and some sort of memo pad on a rather large screen. I'm planning currently to build a new house and I'm thinking something I can wall mount near the fridge or at least in the room. Does anybody have solid suggestions in maybe just the few hundred dollar range (that isn't just buying an android tablet, that is my fall back) and might be lower power and better suited for my need?
