  1. Yea, but software encoders (encoding with cpu) take a lot more time. My cpu can't start a transcode stream without stutters, and Idk even if newer chips can do it without the same problem. That's typically why hardware encoding is preferred. It's also far more power efficient.
  2. I know a lot of home servers get used for plex, and I'm sure many of you have tested the hardware transcoding of PMS. When I see people talking about intel quick sync vs nvidia nvenc the topic is always revolving around the number of encodes the GPU can manage to keep up with. What I am more concerned with, yet have never really seen discussed is the quality of the encoders. What's the consensus on quick sync vs nvenc encoding? In the use case of PMS does one look noticeably better than the other? I'm still running an i7-2600 with the first generation of quick sync that supported h.264 hardware encoding. Do newer generations of the hardware encoders supported in PMS visibly look better than what I'm getting with my system?
  3. Great tip, @oofki! Thank you!
  4. I bought a Razor huntsman v2 TKL, and I'm liking it. I started using the gaming mode, which disables the windows key among other things. I find this nice for not triggering that key by accident, but I need it to work when using win + G to trigger the xbox game bar. Is there any way to let the combo through without just the windows key alone?
  5. Who do you all buy your PC gear from? I used to use newegg back in the day, but I have heard the company got caught reselling (broken?) RMA'ed parts recently without disclosing it to customers. I refuse to buy anything I don't absolutely have to from Amazon. I worked for the company for 9 months during 2020, and came to understand how unfortunately harmful the giant is for our economy. There probably is no "good" option anymore, huh? I miss living in Cincinnati. Microcenter seemed like such a good place to do business with.
  6. I kind of found a workaround to setting plexamp as the music player in windows defaults with the logitech keyboard app. I'd still really like to know how to do this with a normal keyboard too though. This keyboard kind of sucks, and I'll replace it someday.
  7. I've started using plexamp for my music library on windows, and I'm trying to figure out how the OS handles media keys. Plexamp has an always listening keyboard customisation feature for various functions, but I like using my logitech K840's media keys well enough. The problem is that I can't figure out how to tell windows to recognize plexamp as the default media player for music. Does anyone know how I set my system to launch plexamp, or open it to the foreground if already running by pressing the media player key in my my K840's fn layer? I checked the windows default apps in settings, and I can't set plexamp as an option. Not sure what the fix is here. Thanks for your help if you know what to do.
  8. This is kinda based for asking, LMG. Tbh though I'm a dIrTy PiRaTe with both adblock and sponsorblock extensions on lock.
  9. Encoding speed can be drastically impacted by the settings selected, and the input file's complexity. If they're just encoding a video they shot on their iphone or DSLR that isn't the same thing as a bluray rip. I would actually be fine with one of the default x265 presets being used as the benchmark standard with the one modification I think necessary being setting frame rate to same as source for consistency. I don't now how much faster new CPU's are compared to my 7700, but I read one review claiming over a hundred FPS for encoding x265 earlier today on a 10700k I think it was. If they're getting that kind of speed either CPU's have improved with alien technology or the reviewer is encoding too easy a workload. I have no way of knowing which it is because the review methodology does not have stated consistency across all CPU's.
  10. Anyone ever seen a google doc or something that compares different handbrake encode times for different CPU's? I read handbrake benchmarks, but Anandtech and whoever else seem to set handbrake up with some random preset that just boosts FPS. They also never list what their video file is. I'd like to see a ton of CPU's encode the same video file. Like chapter 4 of an accessible bluray release of a well known movie. I currently use an i7-2600 and an i7-7700 to run my handbrake encodes, but I'd like to build a new system. Having some objective data to determine what's the best buy for my workload would be nice. Maybe if this doesn't exist yet we could start something like this. What movie and chapter would you suggest you think?
  11. They're definitely spec'ed similarly, but they're not the same chip are they?
  12. I have a i7-7700 Gigabyte z270x-ud5 system with 32gb of ram and a gtx 1050ti. Would a 3060 or 3050 be cpu limited in modern games at 1440p or 1080p? I'd like to play Elden Ring, Spider-Man remastered, and Final Fantasy VII Remake. I heard I might be able to play these on my current system, but that the gpu might need an upgrade.
