  1. Fitness Desk 3000 I saw the old FitnessDesk 2000 video where you had to exercise to get power to the PC. Now the next step would be to make a version dedicated to games by adjusting the concept a bit. My idea is as follows: Use the human input energy (exercise) to cool CPU and GPU. Modern Cpu's and Gpu's run faster when better cooled, so for our gamer he will need to exercise more for a better FPS. The implementation would require the exercise machine to mechanically or electrically power the pump and fans for a water cooled pc. The pc runs off wall power as normal. This project would be ideal for Alex and his new Workshop.
  2. IF you wanna Have Both: You will need to make 2 USB sticks, one for the Windows 10 installation and one for GParted to create space on your disk. (if you only have one stick you can make the windows install too after re partitioning) First create the GParted Live USB Stick for your system. I assume you are using UEFI already so use that image, EFI is not required but i know it works. Have a look at the documentation on their website on ho to make the pen: Next boot from the pen and shrink your Linux partitions to a suitable size so you have enough space for your stuff and a contiguous block of at least 100 G for windows empty (not partitioned). Apply settings. Reboot the machine and remove the pen when asked, l recommend to boot into your Linux once, just to see if everything is still fine. Now insert the Windows 10 Boot stick and boot to it, the setup should now see free space on the drive and allow you to install to it by selecting it. Proceed with windows setup. Voilà, you have a running Windows at this point. Now Comes the tricky bit: IF you are using UEFI you should be able to select Linux or windows using your Bios boot from device option (usually means hitting F12 while Booting), if not you must use either a BCD editor or use the repair mode of your Linux installation medium to reconfigure GRUB2, I usually do this on my Opensuse by booting the rescue system, mounting my root and boot, chroot into the system an running the YaST boot configuration. These instructions are not detailed but are intended to give you the outline of the steps to do.
  3. Hi when I try to order to Switzerland I do not get any shipping quote because "There are no shipping methods available for your cart or address". reasons? Switzerland is still part of Europe. Thx
  4. It would be nice to see a Techquickie or even an LTT video explaining the difference between Android Auto, MirrorLink and Apple Car play. The Line between mirrorlink and Android Auto is a bit fuzzy. I tried to understand how when you have an android auto enabled phone what apps will be avialable, does it depend on the car manufacturer or just if the app supprts android auto? In general this is a topic where i get the idea neither clients nor dealers really understand everything. Also youtube videos usually just limit themselves to show some Apple car play features. BTW has anyone on the board ever tried android auto in a modern car with the feature enabled, what works and what can you actually do?
  5. I have to admid that I never worked with 3ware cards but as leadeater mentioned your card is very probalby buggy. My approach would be to get a new (identical) RAID card (short look on ebay shows some used 98000-8 ports cards from 10$ up). Importatnt is to use a similar manufacturer and the card should not be older. You can then attach the drives to the new controller and it is possible that the card will recognize the array and start a rebuild.
  6. Well if Naples is as cheap as they say and the motherboards are also no to pricey this could get VERY interesting, have a look at this article from arstechnica: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/03/amd-naples-server-processor-more-cores-bandwidth-memory-than-intel/
  7. I think your point of waiting for enterprise focus on Naples is correct, I Just hope that the customer grade Ryzen CPU's will be supported too because the whole point is to have a cheaper 8 core CPU than what Intel offers, if only Naples will be supported (an therefore enterprise hardware is required) this concept will not really work.
  8. Currently i have one PC that does the pfsense (old core duo) a Windows machine(P4) and no NAS. If i would add a nas i wold have yet another box and cable laying around. The idea is of mine is to squeeze everything in one box to save space and tidy up. This means having pfsense to deal with the network only and the NAS to be NAS related stuff only. I know the setup that I'm going for is not really standard but that is what makes it fun :-).
  9. Hi I have an idea for a new rig that should work fine on Intel chips but the big question is could this work on a Ryzen platform (and be cheaper). My idea is to build a multi purpose machine that runs a hypervisor (KVM/VMware) and provides separate virtual machines for Firewall (Pfsense), NAS(OpenSuSE or other distro) and Windows (Working + Gaming). To improve performance I want to use PCIe-pass trough on the graphics card (for the windows machine) and for a 4 port gigabit card for the Firewall (for the local LAN). On an Intel based platform this is "relatively easy" and supported, the hardware must support VT-d and VT-x etc. The thing though is that Ryzen offers more Cores for the same price witch is interesting for the setup I have in mind. Keep in mind that i don't require a top notch system for gaming, i play mainly older titles. My questions therefore to anyone who might have an idea are: -How well does Ryzen handle virtualization and PCIe-passthrough, does it work at all? -GPU: Nvidia or AMD (what is better supported)? Thanks for any advice.
