  1. How long have you let the PC sit after it freezes? Also, are there any jumpers set on the drive that might interfere?
  2. Before you do that I would try using a restore point from the last time you remember the performance being better. Such a huge drop like that isn't something I have seen before so I can't really help you troubleshoot beyond trying to revert back before going to re-installs on everything individually.
  3. I have a 6700 w/ a 1070 and it does great @4k and @1080p in GTA 5. The game even sets it by default to 4k, but I play it at 1080p so I can read the damn Steam overlay.
  4. Annnd I kinda find a solution. I can't get Windows Movies & TV to play DTS but after much searching and trying more labor intensive methods I found PopCorn MKV AudioConverter. I began the process of demuxing the audio to re-encode it later using MKVToolNix, but then stumbled across PopCorn MKV AudioConverter when trying to find a program to encode DTS to AC3. So while it doesn't make DTS work in Windows Movies & TV I can add an audio track to the mkv container that Windows Movies & TV can play. And it does it all in one step to the user. So in case you were wondering -- I solved my problem.
  5. It appears, after some more reading and settings fiddling, that the HDR metadata isn't making it to the display (TV) properly. Looks like Windows Movies & TV is the only player that can accomplish this even though madVR has settings to pass through the metadata to display. MPC-HC can only begin to look correct when convert HDR content to SDR by using pixel shader math is selected.
  6. Also, do all those images look the same to you or do they reflect the differences in color that I see on my end?
  7. If I lower the refresh rate then I can set output color depth to 12 bpc, but that yields no different results. (I am assuming the ability to select 12 bpc only with lower refresh rates is a bandwidth issue with the HDMI cable.) And selecting HDR under Windows Display Settings just dims the display a lot and doesn't seem to accomplish anything else with the players I am playing with. I think I am going to have to find a solution to Windows Movies & TV DTS audio playback to achieve my desired results.
  8. I have been messing with nvidia control panel settings trying to get the players to reproduce what Windows Movies & TV does and can't get there. And I didn't state before, but other non-UHD content looks great in VLC -- I just can't get anything to accurately produce UHD colors like Windows Movies & TV. And it appears Kodi is no different. It actually looks just as drab as VLC does and how MPC-HC looks without using madVR. Though Kodi does play 4k without any of the other problems VLC has.
  9. I am trying MPC-HC with madVR and the video plays perfectly. However, I still can't get the same vibrant color as I would in Windows Movies & TV. I have downloaded Kodi, but haven't installed it yet. Will it need any add-ons?
  10. **SOLVED IN ELEVENTH POST** Well more of a work around for Windows Movies & TV inability to play DTS. And I wanted to use that program because nothing else correctly sent the HDR metadata. Also, I know the screen grabs I posted will look different to everyone else, but it looks amazing on my end. Hello All, I have been struggling to find a player for 4k videos and after an exhaustive searching of the Googles and several codecs that don't do shite -- I have settled on simply using Windows Movies & TV. It actually does a great job playing back 4k content, however, I have recently discovered that it won't play all audio codecs. Specifically DTS. From what I gather it's a problem with licensing and I can't find a solution to that problem so I resorted to trying VLC to play the content. VLC has no problem with the audio side of things, but as many of you are aware it struggles with the video side of 4k content. And now I have learned it struggles with the HDR color range as well. Again, I have searched and searched to find a solution and have come up with nothing that works. So what I am asking you good people for is any solution to playing this content I have been excited to see. If you have a solution that works for Windows Movies & TV audio then that's great. If you can actually make VLC play 4k UHD videos then that is also great. If I need another player then I am fine with that also. I am gonna attach pictures of the color difference between Windows Movies & TV versus VLC. I won't bother describing the other struggles VLC has with 4k video. Thanks All.
  11. Well I was also looking at a machine built by a guy being sold for $1500 on craigslist. It was a 6700k and a EVGA 1080. He had all parts listed and it priced out to $2000 on pcpartpicker. I came super close to telling him yes, but then I found the Asus on eBay. Also, he purchased everything at fry's and had them install the CPU and test so his total was closer to $2500. But other than I was planning a Ryzen build (almost exactly like your 8 core prosumer build) I should be satisfied with the 1070. Or so says everyone on the internet.
  12. Hello friends. So I've kinda had an eye out ever since I saw Linus say nice things about the Asus ROG G20. I've watched new prices and occasionally used just because I liked the form factor of the G20. I don't have the most space in my setup. I was looking to build a PC, but for the price I paid I'm hoping I didn't make a drunk mistake. Please lemme know opinions. If I need to cancel the purchase or send it back I will. http://www.ebay.com/itm/282474803445?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Also, that wouldn't have been my ideal specs, but for the price I am happy. For now.
  13. If you're looking for better advice then I would recommend explaining more what your assignment is. Is it merely to explain the role of hardware within certain environments? And I ask because that alone sounds too superficial to be part of a college workload. As people have begun pointing out -- there are many variables to consider and distilling it down to a simple "more cores is better" isn't a completely true statement. Hell, ask Linus how he found out more cores isn't always better.
  14. Yeah I was trying to find it. Actually the thermaltake page makes it look more attractive an option than the newegg. Thank you for the link.
