Wheelzz reacted to LegacyStijncat in Unofficial Basic Guide To CPU's
This is my first guide, and I am not a professional. So keep in mind that there could be mistakes in this, and if so, I would love it if you could correct me!
This will feature gifs, so watch out if your device doesn't support this.
If a tutorial like this has already been made, I don't mean to concurrent it, I'm doing this for fun!

In this post, I'm going to explain as much things that matter for consumers, when it comes to CPU's.

Essentials: these are the basics which are important, very important!
CPU, or Central Processing Unit, is literally the processor. It processes all 0's and 1's, and all other stuff. Yet, it doesn't do anything graphically (that's the Graphics Card, or the GPU), which doesn't make it any less important!

Something like a 1GHz processor that can do 2 Instructions Per Cycle will perform the same as a 2GHz processor at 1 Instructions per cycle.

That was all the basics on a need to know basis. I will be following this topic, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! And if I forgot something, please notify me as fast as possible!

I would love it if you guys gave me advice for the future, or to improve this guide!

Usefull stuff: really useful, but not needed at all times!

LGA 1150 (current generation Refresh Celeron, Pentium, i3, i5, i7, except the i7 Extreme Editions). LGA 1151 (next generation Celeron, Pentium, i3, i5, i7). LGA 2011-v3 (current generation Xeons and current generation i7 extreme gaming editions).
(I'm just going to 100% quote @starcoaster here, I have no idea about AMD's sockets )

    FM2/2+ (These sockets mainly feature amd's A-series APU's).
AM3/3+ (This is the generic socket for AMD, featuring the FX-series processors on the 3+ platform).
Well, you now know almost everything that you should know!
But, here's a few important caution lines!
    Well, that was it!
Hope you enjoyed this. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Hope you enjoyed that! Excuse my sloppy work on the AMD chipsets, but I won't take the risk of misinformation and confusion. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them! Even regarding AMD chipsets, I'll do my best to find a way to help you out!

So, what does that say us?
Basically, Cache SRAM, which I believe is standing for Supersaiyan RAM by now.
Even though SRAM cannot keep information permanently, just like DRAM, the performance is higher AND, it can keep information until it's overwritten with something else, or powered off. (Unlike DRAM, which needs to keep refreshing to remain functional!)

The Cache is the CPU's own little superstorage. It stores the most important data for the CPU, right next to it. This way a lot of time can be saved!
But because of the cost, it remains to only have a few megabytes currently.

So that's the basics of the cache. A superior DRAM. But... how much do you need?
I wish I could give you a clear answer on this, but I'll do my best.
The best reference material I could find was this article, which is outdated. Results may vary with what is currently available, but normally, it should remain close.
If anyone has any recent benchmarks, please send them to me!
Gaming: Cache CAN make a difference, but don't bet on it. Winrar file compression: When you go from 1MB to 4MB, you get a 10 second difference. Quite a lot, but the price gap may not be worth it. 3D rendering: No difference in the benchmarks, at least for 3D Studio Max 8.0. Audio/Video conversions and transcoding: A few seconds difference, at best. Benchmarking things like 3DMark: at maximum: 200 points difference. But that's also from 1MB Cache too 4MB Cache. Conclusion:
Cache is important, and more is definitely still better. But, don't spend 100 bucks on just 1-2MB extra cache.
BUT, this conclusion is made from older benchmarks. So...

    Totally unbiased conclusion:
Cache is like DRAM. More cannot hurt, but sometimes it's not always as beneficial and bang for the buck to have more.
So, what I suggest, get more if you can, but don't empty your wallet for it.

Hope you enjoyed that! Point out any mistakes and ask any questions. I'm eager to help!

The More You Know: you don't really need this, but oh well. I made it anyway!

On Windows I try and keep it fairly clean, with only the few apps I want right at my fingertips to be on the taskbar. Other applications that are used less frequently are pinned to my StartIsBack start menu. Applications are launched by Win + # for taskbar icons, or Win + Arrow (to naviagate) + Enter for the less frequent apps in my start menu.

However, I primarily use Linux with i3, so I have a small bar with workspaces and some basic info, and all my applications are either launched via basic key bindings or via the Rofi launcher by typing Win + d.

That drives me crazy as well. I basically only keep the few things I'll always have open anyway.

Cherry doesn't make the best switches, either. Most modern endgame keyboards use things like custom Gaterons or Topre.

I'd add my name to the list for a Corsair model should budget permit.

Additionally, it appears you've also linked a Mechanical Eagle (nope, Magic Eagle) board. Now, I do not have any experience with this company (Mechanical Eagle), but the reviews seem promising and the price is certainly more on the affordable side. It's worth noting that the switches they use to save cost seem to basically be Cherry MX knockoffs. Seems that people report the feel is pretty solid though. Switch life could be a concern over Cherry or other high-end switches.

Just boot into DBAN and wipe the drives you're giving him with it and then reinstall windows afterwards and you'll be good to go. He might not do anything but what happens if he then upgrades and sells the drive? In my experience it's always best to cover your own ass lol.

Probably somewhere at 650-ish Candian. Maybe a bit more, if you have some patience in selling it.
You should consider not selling your HDD's and SSD though, as people could try to get your personal info back (even if you formatted them)

Wheelzz reacted to roylapoutre in does push pull make a difference
The idea of push pull configurations is usually to reduce noise while keeping the same cooling potential. It's the same thing between x2 and x3 fans on GPUs, they can usually maintain lower RPMs but still cool effectively. I have two Silent Wings on my Dark Rock 3 and I can maintain the same temps as one single fan does, but with noticeably less noise. But if you ramp up the RPMs in both configs, you won't see a big difference with the two fans (2-3°C less for me), which is not worth the extra noise imo
  14. Agree
Wheelzz reacted to vanished in does push pull make a difference
The best way is just to try it and check temps.  If you're already getting enough airflow through the rad with one layer of fans, then it won't help, but if the rad is hard to push through, more fans (thus more Delta P) should help.

I am going to have to disagree. If you get a crappy IT job fixing printers and telling people to "turn it off and on again", you'll definitely grow to hate working with technology, and loose interest on the enthusiast front. That being said, if you're working in a field where you're always learning, things can be different.

I am unsure of which side I'll fall on, but I do know that computers and technology are the only things that I'm skilled with.

Nothing is ever this bad; thing will turn around!

The "safe" answer would be what you would tell your parents: mid 20s - 30 when you've landed a good job, a wife, and are in the mood to produce some grand-children for your mom to pinch the cheeks of.

Wow great post "Cyber currency is dumb because I say so. The end."

Great contribution. Can you please explain why you deem cryptocurrency (The proper term for these, btw) as stupid? The idea of a currency that is based on digital medium isn't stupid, because most governments basically operate that way anyway. US Dollars for example are printed when they need more, there's no gold backing from the reserve anymore. Just because there is a paper version of US Dollar doesn't make it any less insubstantial. The main difference between fiat currency (US Dollars) and cryptocurrency is that fiat currency is regulated and backed by an economy. Regulation means that it's able to be influenced and manipulated by the regulating body.

Does that make cryptocurrency the ultimate answer to our problems? Not necessarily, but it does allow a viable alternative to be explored.

    Here is the problem:
1- BestBuy hires people at near minimum wage for GeekSquad. No one will knowledge will actually work there, except maybe , if you are lucky, fall with a student early job that is like us, that knows a lot about computer. And I think this is what the company hopes to get.
2- The staff is trained quickly, and not properly. Leading them to miss diagnose problem, or refer to a manual which only has a handful of problems/solution
3- They are pushed to over worked. With many stores telling consumers that the work will be done by end of day, they are under staff, and leads to having 0 time in actually troubleshooting. Many work on multiple systems at the same time, which can lead to confusing on which system had what. This is also why, when you order the "optimization" package, which is claimed to remove all the junk from your system. All they do is, unless the store was not busy that day, and like I said you fell with a knowledgeable person, just delete the Start Menu/Screen and Desktop shortcuts. They are still uninstalled. but no time for that. Especially when you get your 400-700$.. it won't have an SSD, and will be slow. (not saying that things will changed even if you got that Alienware gaming computer).
4- They are pushed to sale. Clueless managers are pushing these geek squad employees to promote HDD replacements, RAM replacement/upgrade and other crap, as it's it is beneficial for the store end of the year bonus. Best Buy employees doesn't have commission, but they do have end of year bonus, especially the managers.
If you want real, quality service, look for small computer stores. Sure they look like shit, many of them. But at least you'll fall with a person that wants your business next time, might even fix your problem for free if it's silly, and be honest with you, and charge you a fair price, considering also that he has actual knowledge in the field. Sure you might get scammed.. but MIGHT is better than 99.99% with Best Buy and in fact, same for other big retailers. Consumers goes to big stores in the taught that they won't get scammed, but that is exactly the place where you'll be.
As for buying a computer at big stores to get an extended warranty. The best place to get an extended warranty, which won't be air, is with the manufacturer directly. Many allows also price negotiation of the system over the phone, even offer free upgrades just for calling, including free shipping if it's not. Why extended warranty is best with the manufacture:
-> All parts are genuine, official and certified by the company. Geek Squad... sends it to a third party, and you don't know what will happen.
-> Installation will be done correctly, with well trained staff. Geek Squad and a like, the person will probably end up with 8-12 screws in his hands after assembling everything, especially when done in store.
-> The device is actual be fixed, no cost cutting measure. For example, they are stories with big chain stores like Best Buy, where the power plug is broken, instead of replacing the system board, they'll use hot glue to hold it. This way they don't need to spend money on a system board, maximizing profit on that extended warranty you got.
-> Some companies, such as Dell, offers even on site service. Meaning, a certified, proper technician, comes at your place, at the time you want, to fix your system, in front of you. You get to make sure the job is done right, and that the problem is solved.
The only time I buy any extended warranties is with the manufacture directly. Always had superb service, making my money worth it.
(I usually get it for mobile devices, as they get carried around daily with me.)
