You realize, no matter how much you love Mr. Musk, he will *never* know you exist, right?  And kissing his ass on the LTT forum is *never* gonna get him to notice you, right?

Hey now, let’s not discount the possibility that those accounts actually are Elon musk trying to make himself feel better.  It’s quite unlikely don’t get me wrong, but would anyone be even remotely surprised if you found out it was him trying to defend himself on a random forum online?

Elon Musk is currently suing the law firm that represented twitter when he attempted to get out of the contract he signed to buy twitter in his current role as the CEO of twitter because he thinks twitter paid them too much to force him to honor the contract that he signed.

His primary argument for the idea that they were paid too much is that the lawsuit didn't require any special skills, knowledge, or infrastructure that would mandate hiring one of if not the top mergers and acquisitions firms in the world.

So Elon Musk's argument that Twitter paid too much to this law firm is that his case to try to get out of buying twitter was so flawed any random lawyer with basic business sense could have represented Twitter to the exact same result.

Don't get me wrong "My case was so stupid literally anyone could have forced me to buy the platform" is an interesting defense, but perhaps while you question what Linus might be wrong about, and that's always a valid thing to do, also question both your opinion about Elon Musk, and your own opinion about how you disseminate and absorb information about people.

    I completely agree with this.

With threads being a thing now everybody seems to love that and is calling Twitter dead and useless.

I don't think people should transition to threads, Elon is trying to convert twitter into a free speech platform and threads is the direct opposit of that.

I'm not an Elon musk fanboy, but this is just the mainstream media trying to take down one of the only free speech platforms.

You're aware that something being said by the "mainstream media" doesn't automatically mean it's incorrect, right...? Critical thinking doesn't mean just assuming the opposite of what mainstream media says, lmao

also it's hilarious to me that you're invoking this in defense of a guy who owns one of the largest mainstream social media platforms, as though he didn't have a huge platform to get his own side of the story out. his own statements paint him as a creepy buffoon.

I have been a big fan of Linus and the team since the begining. Even before the Langly house. I remember the day Linus painted his home garage as a set  background. I even go back and watch old LTT and CSF videos for fun and it's also pretty nostalgic for me.

I have adored Linus's takes on pretty much anything and he has been right most of the time or have been transparent/logical about his remarks otherwise.

Although i have to argue the recent remarks that linus had been delivering in the past few months about Elon and the twitter acquisition has made me realise that Linus has changed his approach when covering main stream news events. He has become a product of the media propaganda machine that he despised at the early days.

Its funny that i first discovered Tesla/Elon from wan show back in the day around 2012 or so, when WAN show covered the model S safety demonstration video where it showcased that the roof of the car was so strong that you could stack 5 model s on top of each other before the roof of the bottom most models collapses. And I am forever great full for Linus and LMG for all the entertainment and information that its brought to me over the years.

But the way Linus has become an Elon hater or Twitter hater without seeking beyond what mainstream media has put out has been shocking to me. It begs the question if Linus is wrong about this what else is he wrong about.

It has been heartbreaking for me to part ways with one of my favourite creators and see them follow the mainstream media propaganda. And I have tried to forget about the whole thing and just keep an open mind and give linus the benifit of the doubt about what he is saying. But Linus keeps digging and he doesn't seem to stop or try to understand whats really going on.

I sincerely hope linus would open his eyes sooner than later and realise he has been wrong about the whole twitter/elon saga and make things right.

lewdicrous reacted to LAwLz in EU Lists First 7 Potential "Gatekeepers" Under The Digital Markets Act (DMA)
On the 4th of July, the EU published a list of the first 7 companies they are potentially considering "gatekeepers" according to the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
    The companies are:
Alphabet (aka Google) Amazon Apple ByteDance (aka TikTok) Meta (aka Facebook) Microsoft Samsung
A gatekeeper is according to the DMA a company that fulfills these three criteria:
Has a market size big enough to impact the internal markets, which is further classified as being at least one of the following: Had an annual turnover in the EU of at least 7,5 billion euros the last 3 years in a row. Has a fair market value of at least 75 billion Euro and provides the same core platform service in at least 3 member states. Has more than 45 million monthly active end users in the EU and at least 10,000 yearly active business users in the EU in the last financial year. Have had 45 million monthly active end users in the EU and at least 10,000 yearly active business users in the EU for three years in a row.
The announcement also mentions it applies to "core platform services" and lists things such as social network services, operating systems, and search engines as being potential gatekeepers. My guess is that it would be hard to classify let's say a game or a language learning app as a "core platform service" even if it fulfills all the criteria. It seems like the law is designed to target "more important" areas where there is a risk of abuse because the service connects to other services and businesses, like an app store controlling what other businesses can and can't do in their apps, or a social media network controlling who can talk to who, and how. But that remains to be seen.

If you are labeled a gatekeeper under the DMA, you will no longer be allowed to:
Lock in users to their ecosystems. No longer decide which apps you need to have pre-installed on your devices and which app stores you have to use. No longer be allowed to "self-preference" by treating your own products and services more favorably. Messaging apps will have to interoperate with each other. And more things.

How these things will be enforced and what the end result will look like will most likely vary from service to service.
The full legal text includes more detailed explanations, but there will probably be some arguing about what it means anyway. You can find that info in for example article 7 (Obligations for gatekeepers on interoperability of number-independent interpersonal communication services) of the full legal text if interested. That also outlines the timeline for when various services have to comply. For example, interoperability for group audio calls between gatekeepers needs to work within 4 years from the designation.

The goal is, in the EU commissions own words that:

    My thoughts
This sounds good to me. I am a bit skeptical and worried about what the end result will be, but the intentions seem good and it sounds like the companies on the list all qualifies. Some companies will certainly be affected more than others though. Judging by the criteria it seems like for example, Samsung will basically just have to let users uninstall preinstalled apps (which they already do to a big degree), while Apple will have to rework a large portion of their services.

Unfortunately, this is extremely common knowledge. This is a good lesson in doing research before making large purchasing decisions. Almost every single review I have ever seen for Mac’s over the last ~5 years reminds the reader/viewer there is nothing upgradable about them. This is just the unfortunate future we are moving towards, but it’s also how apple is able to get such fantastic performance while also retaining best in class battery life…. And slim chassis. It takes tight integration to do that. It just is what it is.

Does any of this translate into actual performance issues in games?

This tool is specifically designed for real-time audio. The word "real-time" has a very specific meaning in computing tasks and is not something an average person has to worry about. Note the red X next to "novice users": https://www.resplendence.com/latencymon

The tool is saying you have an average latency of 1.2 µs. That's 0.0012 milliseconds or 0.0000012 seconds. That's not the type of latency a gamer needs to worry about. Ever. Start worrying if you're a real-time audio engineer. If you experience 200+ millisecond network latency in games, that's something to worry about.

That is very likely not the issue here. As I said above, real-time refers to a very specific type of computing, not something games use. You're likely chasing the wrong cause here.

Just look at how the tool is measuring latency in µs. You generally don't need to worry about latency at that scale. For games latency starts to matter when it reaches milliseconds, which is 1000 times greater. Even the highest measured latency of 12,000 µs is just 12 ms. The current latency is only 0.019 ms.

If you want to analyze performance issues in games, install something like MSI Afterburner, then have a look at GPU and CPU usage plus temperatures while in game. If your computer starts to stutter, it might be down to insufficient cooling and e.g. GPU reducing its clock rate to compensate.
