lewdicrous reacted to GOTSpectrum for a blog entry, Day Five - The Last Push
And so the final couple days are here, and there is still some excitement to be had!

In first place we have Miker07 with 134.05 million points, sitting comfortably it would take a significant effort for anyone to catch the guy by this point. Justaphf is up in second place with 101.37 million points, I think this is the best position we will see from the phf for this event. The script breaker, Pezui takes third place with 63.20 million points. Ir8munk33 in in fourth place with 48.2 million points. He will certainly have to be careful with such a massive drop in production we could see his falling significantly. LazyDev is in fifth place with 44.99 million points and could be looking to capitalise on the guys ahead loss of steam to gain a rung higher. Lazy is followed by Baha who is sitting on 41.45 million points. RollinLower is in 7th place with 38.85 million points and is looking quite safe at this late point in the event. In 8th place we have GOTSpectrum with 30.55 million points and is certainly being challenged by those behind him. Kilrah is sitting in 9th with 27.97 million points followed closely by mindstormer7 who is the last of the top ten with 27.82 million points.

Well here we are, at the end of our little five day sprint. It went by super fast and half the team ended up unavailable due to illness or work.  So massive, MASSIVE Thanks to @cbigfootWho honestly did 70% of the work on this one. Really, He carried the event this time around and deserves all the thanks we can give him.

I'm not going to talk too much hear as this is a low effort mini event but can we all just appreciate that somehow, Den-Fi managed to win again... no-one could have seen this coming... honestly... I'm sure he is as surprised as the rest of us. /s

You have seven days to claim the prizes from this event. To claim the prize you need to DM me. It's that simple. They will now be rerolled if you don't claim they will simply be added to the community pool.

Den-Fi continues his reign of terror at the top of the table and GOTSpectrum is hanging onto 20 by the skin of their teeth. We could be seeing some movement on the ranks in the last 24 hours with chaozbandit, Meganter, Bhoriss, Spotty, crippledcortex, Giggity and Favebook among those who could be taking another rank or two in the closing hours of the event.

But I think for the most part the ranks we are seeing here are looking about set. But as you all know your rank is not overly relevant in this event as all prizes are available to all ranks. But we all know Mr. Den, will enjoy reaffirming his spot on the thrown.

So here we are, the first day of results.

I'm not planning to write all that much for this small five day event but I just wanted to thank everyone who has come along. You are all awesome and should be proud of the time and dedication you put into the fold. I was planning to do this last night but I fell asleep at my desk. Which is why I'm awake at such an early time. Turns out the new meds really do make me drowsy(no alcohol required)!

Miker07 takes the lead with 36.1 million points, Den-Fi comes up in second with 25.2 million points and third place is Shouski with 21.4 million points. Gorgon is up next in fourth place with 18.5m points, Mxyzptlk is in fifth place with 15.9 million points and sixth place is occupied by Justaphf with 15.1 million points. LazyDev is in seventh place with 13.1m points, vsteel takes eight place with 10m, Baha is in ninth place with 8.9m and finally Favebook takes tenth place with 8.4m.

I believe it is important that during the times of outlining and appreciating the efforts of high rankings we reflect on why we are folding. We give thanks to those that made it possible and treasure each and every single person that pushed and folded against this invisible enemy.

Coronavirus has claimed over 100,000 lives across the globe, infecting over two million people. This is why we fold, this is the reason we have been brought together. Only in times of such hardship do we see the best and worst of mankind. People from all walks of life doing what they can to help, volunteering, folding, shopping and delivering for their communities, singing, cheering to our key workers. This is the embodiment of humanity, this is how our generation should be remember during this crisis. We are strong, united, resolute. We will not let ourselves be overcome by fear for as long as we have each other. So, go fourth caring with respect, with patience, with tolerance, with kindness in your heart, because it is surely needed in today's world.

    Before we get into the rankings there are a few things I want to mention;

    1. Although I have been the fact of this event I want everyone to take a moment to give thanks to @Metallus97 for his amazing contribution with the FAQ, tech support and help with the datasheet, @j1philli who has been a tremendous help with validating entries on the sheet and finally @leadeater who wrote the script we used for ensuring smooth data collection.

    2. I'd like everyone to head over and donate a few dollars to Jason at EOC, his servers must have taken a beating with all the traffic we have thrown at the guy over the last few weeks or so. You can either use this PayPal link or find the PayPal donation button on the EOC Website on the right. Don't forget to include a note so he knows it came from team LTT, mine said 'With love for LTT, thanks for everything you do.'

    3. I'd like to give a personal thanks to everyone who has been understanding of my own health during this event, it was hastily thrown together which lead to more issues than usually found!

    4. Finally I'd like to ask that you continue to fold, for the benefit of all of us, even if it is in a far more limited capacity moving forward.

It has been an exciting event, despite the darkness that looms over the world currently many of us, including myself have found a little lightness on the event thread, this doesn't have to end, we do have a Folding Community Board in which you can continue the conversation in all its glory! You can find that Here!

I want to give thanks to everyone who has been involved folding for TeamLTT over the last few weeks, no matter if you are folding only a few points a day or millions, no matter if you signed up to the event or not, your hard work and dedication is appreciated! Don't forget that if you talk about folding on twitter use the hastag #TeamLTT and I will be trying to keep an eye on it, so now, after you have read this post and feel the need to go troll PCMR a little, and lets be honest, after the pitiful attempt to challenge us, you will feel the need. We can all be a little more connected!

In first place, we have @Macaw2000 with an impressive 339,946,109 points warned with 5,613 Work units over the 14 days of the event. He utilised mercenaries well to make a final dash for the throne and now he sits comfortably, in the plush luxury smiling upon those that stand below him.

Second place we have the great oppressor, the disgraced king, @Den-Fi, who failed to take by his throne lost during the great crusades of Folding Month 2019. With 296,964,235 Points achieved with a surprising small 1,444 Work Units it has to be said that he certainly had one of the highest P/WU ratios in the event.

Third place we see is occupied by @walderston, who, given just a little more time could have snatched the silver spot from the fallen king. 237,268,117 Points taken with 1,261 Work Units is nothings to bite your thumb at for sure. But he will be left wondering if he can do better next event!

Fourth place is taken by the veteran @miker07 who has once again proved his worth with 196,425,757 points taken through 2,203 Work units. Forth place is nothing to be ashamed with but it will be interesting to see if he expands his forces by the time folding month comes around.

Fifth place finds @ZombieStew content with his first showing in a LTT Folding event, 145,684,152 Points and 2,079 Work units. He will certainly be looking forward to future events!

Sixth place we have another newcomer, @Unilevers, a fine showing that we hope to see again in the future.

Seventh place is @bafo_ah, another newbie shaking up the team with a good showing.

Eighth place is @wi3si, it will be excited to see if they can muster any more force for the future.

Ninth place can be claimed by @Ayren, who only folded for 13 days should be asking did that one day down cosy them too much?

Tenth place is where we leave this today, @GalaxyNetworks is the proud holder of 10th, the gatekeeper, but will they be bettering themselves next time out.

And here you can find the full set of data including the Prize allocations:- Full Folding Data and Ranks!

If you don't see your name on the list above you either did not sign up for this event or you did not meet the minimum requirements. This event was not eligible for Folding Event Badges, PLEASE DO NOT message me or the team about event badges. For general folding badges use the thread Here!

Now it is time for the prizes!

I was planning to tag each winner but due to the number of prizes and limitation I have recently been made aware of the winning ranks will be listed here and the winners will be tagged in comments to this post. This will ensure all winners get a notification for the tag.

The winners will have 7 working days from the publication of this post to claim the prize, if the prize goes unclaimed it will be added to the community pool for use in future events. In order to claim the Prize you will need to PM me here on the forum, with the subject

'Give me the key that I am owed!'

Also please can you include your rank to make it quicker and easier for me to get it all sorted!

    Events that are coming up!

    Top Jank of The Event!

I really just want to thank you all again for taking part in the event, you guys have really made it special, every single one of you!

with all that said it is finally time to wrap this one up, but please continue to fold and I am looking forward to seeing you guys take part in the BOINC Pentathlon, Summer folding sprint and most assuredly, Folding Month 2020!

lewdicrous reacted to GOTSpectrum for a blog entry, Day Eleven - The Fall of Oppression
Legs Eleven anyone? It looks like the fall of the king may be on the horizon... How will he respond? Is the king to take up arms or abdicate his throne?

    Today's drink, Comforting Old Fashioned

Currently counting his days on the throne we have The King @Den-Fi with 233.76 million points! He has been sitting comfortably for most of the event but @Macaw2000 has rallied the mercenaries of the cloud to help oust the king, taking the number two spot with 214.07 million points it looks all but certain that he will find himself occupying the throne by the time the curtain falls. In third place we have @miker07 with 149.88 million points, he can look at the rear view mirror with some relaxation as seems to be fairly stable in the bronze spot. In forth place we have @walderston, with 146.7m points he can be proud of his achievements so far in the event for sure! In fifth place we have the eater of brains, @ZombieStew, with 114.0 million points it has to be said that he has done well for himself despite being a member of the dead.

@Ayren in 6th place seems to be losing steam with 104m points they can be somewhat confident of a decent ranking by the end of the event for sure. 7th place we see @Unilevers steaming ahead full bore, with 85m points they will certainly need to push hard if they are looking to make some headway up the ranks. @bafo_ah this strangely named individual has captured the rank of 8th so far with 85m points, but there is come aggressive moved being made to their rear that they will need to be conscious about if they wish to make that spot their own. In 9th place we find @Xoggy with 81m points, @n0xlf is slightly out producing him but with only 66m points there is some distance to clear if advancement is the aim of the game here!

11th place is seated by @LAR_Systems with 64m points. @kto can be found taking the number 12 spot with 55m points. In 13th we have an interesting case, @GalaxyNetworks seems to have picked up the pace currently sitting on 55m points there is a possibility of leadfrogging a few of the ranks above. In 14th we have @HybridTI with 54m points and finally in 15th place we have @BlackAda with 53m. But as the gate-keeper of the top 15 he will need to look out as a number of lower ranks are looking for a promotion!

The king @Den-Fi has rallied the troops to make sure he can rout any who dare to challenge him! With 90.34 million points he is starting to look unstoppable, @ZombieStew Is looking comfortable in second place with 48.43 million but with 4th place boosting production will he manage to stay there till the end! Third placve isnt looking all that secure, @miker07 is really going to have to pull a 2080ti rabbit out of his hat if he is wanting to hold onto that silver position. In fourth place @Xoggy is making waves! With a total of 33.0 millionpoints and a production of over 12m points in the last 24 hours he will be looking forward to take the 2 and 3 spot. In fifth place we have @Ayren with 28.3 million points!

The great team of LTT continues to steam ahead, blowing all previous records out of the water! It was once said that when the call to action came in the enthusiast community would be too selfish to mobilise in great numbers, well here we are! Standing tall, proud, unified! We have dedicated so many resources, so much time, and power. We throw ourselves into the task, babysitting our devices, reading up ways to maximise our production, supporting each other! Thank you to every single one of you who has joined the fight against COVID-19, and I hope to see you hang around the folding team after all this is over. All are welcome here at team LTT!

Look at this amazing Video from EOC that shows our climb up the ranks, and I believe it would be amazing to see this climb continue.

In first place the king @Den-Fi sits on his throne, holding onto the crown with an amazing 64.49 million points, he id really pulling ahead and now we find ourselves asking, can he be conquered. Second place is occupied by @ZombieStew, but with 37.85 million points I'm sure he has come to terms with the fact that he won't be sitting on any thrones by the end of this. @miker07 takes third place with 36.95 million points, he could seriously be looking to take the number two spot if he can only find himself a little more grunt to throw at the problem. With a wide gap opening up behind him he must be feeling pretty secure as @Xoggy comes in fourth with 25.4 million points, the X man doesn't have the power needed to advance further by the looks of it and there are a few further down the table that could be a challenge to him over the coming days. Fifth place is taken up by @n0xlf, it looks like they have had a tough day folding only bagging 3.4m points bringing his total up to 23.5 million, if he is wanting to keep that spot there needs to be more power thrown at the problem! @Fapasaurus is in 6th with 19.2m points, but with a production of 4.8m he could prove to be a challenger for the ahead of him if he plays the cards rights. Sitting 1.9m points behind him we find @BlackAda with 17.3m points. @Favebook finding himself in in 8th in such a large competition goes to show some of the pedigree we have here in the ranks, but, as he will know quite well, everything can change during the event. With 16.8m points he is in a precarious place, as not far behind we have @Unilevers who has already been promoted from the gatekeeper spot with 16.5m. The new man of the gate of the top 10 is @Ayren, with 15.9m it can be said that they are pulling theor weight to keep that place in the rankings for sure! 11th place we have @LAR_Systems who has fallen out of grace with the folding gods and has fallen down the stack, holding on with 15.6m it's all to place for to squeeze into the top 10! @Yabdat, another well seasoned folder is sitting in 12th place with a comfortable 15.5m, he will almost certainly be looking at these numbers closely to see if theres an advantage to be had. But, it will be important for him to cast his eyes to his rear as we have @HybridTI outpacing him and only a divide of 200k points separate the two folders. But the predator that is @Macaw2000 is firing on all cylinders, having both of them in their sights by outproducing then with a total of 15.2 million points so far! And in 15th place we have @catawalks, the walker of cats, the purveyor of felines, holding into the last of the top 15 spots with 15.1m points.

Looking down the stack we do have some more interesting guys popping up, like @BlueSpartan, who with a production of 2.5m points in the last day could truly be planning to make a splash. @cyberguy91, @abakus3k and @madarus are also ones to watch for sure in the coming days!

As you can see it all so very exited here. With the top spots being passed back and forth as people try their bast to force more production out of their machine, but, be cautious, because if you push it too far you may drop WUs and although this early in the game it may not be world-ending. I'm sure you'd end up with a little egg on your face regardless!

And the first day of the event has officially taken off.

But first, a PSA, due to data corruption these stats run until 0300GMT, 28th of march, so the stats here reflect 27 hours of folding. As for the participation requirements, they will remain as is FOR NOW, but this is under review and after reviewing the first few days a decision will be made and announced on that days blog. Don't forget to follow this blog to keep up to date!

Well it can be said that today we are heroes, today we unite with all other folding teams to show the world just how much we are capable of. Pushing the Folding@Home network right to the brink of what it is capable of, breaking past the one exaflop barrier and becoming the fastest computing system in the world by a significant margin, and we are growing. Team LTT makes up almost 25% of the networks production, that, is truly a sight to behold. But I expect we have more to give, I expect team LTT will rise to the challenge like never before. Because that's just who we are!

This is just another PSA for the new guys here, the folding team is a small close knit community, so here's a few things I'd like you all to keep in mind. It doesn't hurt to say thank you, if someone has genuinely helped you out don't forget to drop a reaction on their posts, help others where ever you can and finally we are a team first and always.

It has been some time since I has to write a daily report, so bare with me, sit back and enjoy.

Be proud of what you are a part of on this day, be proud of the fact so many of us, from all teams have rallied when the the call to action came in, be proud that you are doing something that is for the benefit of all! Bask in the glory of the power of the whole Folding Network. This is not an event where it is us vs them, there is only US in these dark times.

In first place we have the king! @Den-Fi with 12.01 million points, he has set himself apart from the pack, the question is, can he manage to keep his throne this time around, In second place we have @ZombieStew training behind the king by 1.6 million points holding onto his position with 10.41 million points, one of the many new names to us here at the LTT folding team, he will be looking to leave his mark with his debut, but the question remains, can they keep pace with the king? In third place we have @miker07 a seasoned veteran of the team looking to show that even with all the new folders, he can shine as bright as ever!  He has a gap of 760 thousand points, taking third place with 8.7 million points. Fourth place is held onto by @Xoggy with 7.2 million points, a name I know well, he is making a splash with some serious production so far, but can he maintain steam. Fifth place is current occupied by @Fapasaurus, I hope his GPUs can move WU as fast as his hands can.. er.. you know, with 6.2 million points he's nothing if not production.

6th place is taken by @BlackAda, another new name who is seeming like a great addition to the team! with 5.6m points hes one to watch for sure, 7th place has @Macaw2000 with 4.9 million points, lots of new faces up top, its nice to see. 8th place is occupied by another veteran, @Favebook with 4.6m points, not far behind him with 4.5m points we have another seasoned named, @Yabdat. The already well known charitable crustacean @Zberg taking the number 10 spot with 4.1m points. He is the gate keeper of the top 10, but will he be W00P W00Ping his way to a nice finish or is he destined to end us being boiled alive, only time will tell!

11th place has another well known face, @catawalks, I'm not sure how a feline can operate a folding rig and I hope they keep they fans covered with some good dust filters with all that fur, but 3.9m points is nothing to hiss at! The question is, will the cat manage to be the hunter, or is @GOTSpectrum ready to pounce as he is only a stone-throws behind with 3.8m points. 13th is taken by @Unilevers, the question is can they hand out WUs like they do food products, with 3.7m points its all to play for here! In 14th place we find @ykdave and 'you know dave' with just 100 points behind you could very well well show unilevers just what it takes to cut the mustard. @HybridTI is also eyeing up advancing up the ranks being only 10k behind dave.

During this update the top 10 make up 5.7% of the total, the top 50 can claim 14.3% and the top 100 can be proud with their just over 20% stake.

    Well guys,

It has been hell here are LTT folding HQ, also known as my bedroom, but we have made it, with 8200, mostly verified sign ups, this is just crazy.

The questions stand, will the old king @Den-Fi retake his throne, Will our venerable team leader manage to keep his respectable positions of the days of old, who will be making a name for themselves from the new comers! Only time will tell as once again we are here. But this is an event unlike any other, we fold united with every team, every folder, for the common goal of helping to defeat the current health crisis causing virus, COVID-19. We will stand together, united, strong proud! We have the power to change the world, and I am so proud to saw that team LTT has heard the call to arms, we saw the beacons lit, and we responded, in force.

this is a short post because its late AF! Btw for anyone who have received a message from me you have until 2200GMT, in approx 6.5 hours to respond and have any issues resolved.

Please find the list attached here, look upon it and smile, for today, we are heroes!

We have lunged ourselves over the precipice, many of us find ourselves stripped of liberties for the safety of the most vulnerable in society. These measures are alien to most of us, a pandemic of which the likes has not been seen for a century. But even now, we have millions of doctors tending to the unwell, thousands of working to find a solution, a treatment, a vaccine.

Together we are all working towards that goal, whether that by directly assisting the research, abiding by the limitations placed on us by the state or by dedicating our massive pool of computing resources to the cause. We will defeat this, we will emerge from the other side. I hope that after this is all over many of us will remember the sheer amount of work Folding at Home has put in, and i hope, that you will stick around, folding, doing your own small part in the never ending march of scientific progress. Because only together and united can we dream of a better tomorrow.

I am so proud of every single of of us, from people running a old laptop with an ATOM processor to the more eccentric of us, who dedicate massive numbers of devices folding 24/7. We are not in competition, we are a team. You may feel like folding on your lower power hardware is not as worthwhile as someone folding on 4 2080TIs, but it takes the cumulative force of us all to advance this march of progress. So please, sit back, listen to the pur(or scream) of your rigs and smile to yourself. Remind yourself that this is not wasted power nor wasted money. Bask in the knowledge that together we are making a difference, not only to COVID-19 research but to a plethora of areas. We may not see the benefit of much of this research for quite some time.

The research carried out by F@H allows to better understand not only the enemy that is the Virus' and diseases but also to better understand ourselves and our biological functions.

We have verified around 90% of these, I'm hoping to post a list of invalid forum names and folding names in the next 24 hours so people have time to let me know what needs to be changed.

This list is valid as of 1315 GMT, if you have signed up after this time you won't be on the list but you will be on the sheet. Please wait for the next list update and refrain from messaging me inquiring on the status of your sign up.

lewdicrous reacted to colonel_mortis for a blog entry, A breakdown of Saturday's outage
Timeline of the outage: (times in UTC)
Starting at 02:03 on Saturday, requests started intermittently returning error 502, and many of the requests that were served successfully were significantly slower than normal At 05:59, most of the services on the server crashed. All subsequent requests were served by Cloudflare with error code 502 At about 11:00, I came online and attempted to diagnose the problem. Due to the previous failures I was unable to access the server, so all I was able to do was route traffic to an offline page At 16:35, with extra help, the server was forcibly restarted At 16:43 the server seemed to have come up successfully, so we enabled traffic and monitored the status By 16:53 it was clear that performance very poor and a significant fraction of the requests were resulting in error 502 (which means in this case that the server was already processing too many requests, so where were no workers available), so we disabled traffic again to investigate the situation further At 17:36, there was nothing clearly wrong so we tried enabling traffic again At 17:39 the performance was significantly regressing again so the site was turned offline again At 18:00 we ordered a new server At 18:35 the server was ready to be set up with all of the forum-related things, and for the data to be migrated to it At 21:28, the new server was fully set up and the forum was turned back online
    What were the symptoms?
IOWait accounted for the majority of CPU time, but IO utilisation was relatively normal In the syslog we were seeing a number of IO timeouts for the primary drive Prior to rebooting, the limited errors that we could see indicated that there had been disk corruption
    What was the root cause?
Although we aren't 100% sure, we think it's fairly likely that one of the two RAID 1 disks that form the primary disk had failed, and the poor performance was a consequence of trying to rebuild the array.

Why replace the server rather than the disk?
There were already plans to replace the server, this failure just accelerated them. We were also of the opinion that having the disk replaced and getting the array rebuilt would likely not end up being faster, especially as we did not have sufficient information to pinpoint the failure.

lewdicrous reacted to SSL for a blog entry, Audio Interference Troubleshooting Guide
    Introduction
Audio interference (as defined below under "Symptoms") is a defect in a system due to hardware, software or firmware problems. It is not an inevitable consequence of using an integrated audio codec or sound card.

Purchase of a sound card or external DAC is not necessary to fix this issue in most cases.

STEP 1: Sanity Check (START HERE FIRST)
Before diving into an exhaustive troubleshooting process, do some basic pre-checks:
Ensure that audio connectors are inserted into the correct jack (headphones in headphone jack, speakers in line-out) Ensure that audio connectors have the right wiring for the given jack (e.g. 3-pin plug to 3-pin jack, 4-pin to 4-pin, etc) Ensure audio connectors are fully and firmly inserted into audio jacks Ensure that software or drivers are properly configured (headphone mode for headphones, speaker mode for speakers) IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure that your system supports the type of device you are using. If you are using headphones, make sure that your audio source supports headphones and is CONFIGURED to support headphones. A "tinny" sound may mean that you are trying to use headphones while your audio is in speaker mode.

    Symptoms
Audio interference manifests as any of the following sounds coming through speakers, headphones, or other audio recording and playback equipment. Coil whine coming directly from a power supply, GPU, or motherboard capacitor is not audio interference, although it may be related.
Continuous static, clicks, crackles, or pops; Rice Crispy sounds Static or buzzing when moving the mouse, typing on the keyboard, or accessing physical drives Static, buzzing, or crackling when in a game or during other heavy 3D workloads Continuous hum or buzz around 60Hz and/or its harmonics Intermittent buzzing that may follow a regular pattern Possible Causes
The canned solution to audio interference is to get an external DAC or soundcard. This advice frequently results in needless expenditure and may not even address the underlying problem.

    STEP 2: Diagnostic Process
As audio interference may be caused by an enormous range of problems, the purpose of diagnostics is to narrow down the proximate cause in as systematic fashion as possible. At this point do not directly attempt to solve the problem.
Perform each check in the following list. If the audio interference issue goes away, you have likely identified the cause. In some cases, no further steps may be required. If the troubleshooting step fixes the issue but is not practical for normal use (such as booting in Windows Safe Mode or disabling an overclock), consult the corresponding Solutions and Workarounds section below. FIRST STEPS:
Test different headphones/speakers on the system AND test the same headphones/speakers on a different system This will determine if the problem is related to your system or your headphones/speakers Test all audio jacks/USB ports, both on the case and on the rear motherboard IO panel A jack or port may be bad Reduce system master volume and/or game master volume from 100% to 75-80% For microphones: reduce volume and turn down gain/boost if available Disable all audio effects in the Windows Sound and Audio Devices Properties Audio effects in the Windows mixer reduce quality and can cause interference Check for Driver and Software Issues:
Try different settings in the audio drivers control panel or system audio settings Ensure that if you are using headphones that your audio is in headphone mode Ensure that if your audio settings have an impedance or gain setting that it is not too high or too low Boot Windows in Safe Mode; if the interference stops it is likely caused by a driver On Windows 7, 8, or 10, install LatencyMon to determine the responsible driver On Windows XP or Vista, install DPC Latency Checker. You will need to systematically disable devices in hardware manager to narrow down the cause. Disable unused audio devices in the Windows Device Manager Check Task Manager for resource hogs and real-time priority processes Perform a full virus scan Check for Power Management Issues:
Disable C1E (Enhanced halt state) and EIST (Intel SpeedStep) in BIOS Set Windows Power Plan to Power Saver or High Performance Disable all overclocks (CPU, GPU, RAM, etc) Check for Hardware Issues:
Disable unused/non-essential motherboard components at the BIOS level, such as NICs or RAID/SATA controllers Disconnect ALL non-audio peripherals (including mouse, keyboard, and display) Disconnect front audio header and use motherboard rear-panel or sound card; if you are already using rear-panel audio, try front-panel instead Remove discrete graphics cards Remove discrete soundcard Check for Electrical Shorts and Grounding Issues:
Remove case side panels; check for unwanted electrical contact between components such as wires and electrical contacts Disconnect front audio header Verify that the motherboard is firmly secured. Standoffs and screws should be firm. Ensure the motherboard is firmly seated in the IO plate, and that the IO plate is firmly seated in the case. Verify that the power supply is properly secured in the case and that it is connected to a grounded (3-prong) outlet Check for Wireless Interference:
Relocate possible sources of EMI/RFI interference away from the computer and audio equipment (wireless access points, wireless peripherals, mobile phones, microwave ovens, etc) Unplug other appliances that may be source of interference over AC power This includes but is not limited to: household appliances, dimmer light switches, and other computers Connect the system a different AC wall socket, preferably on a different circuit breaker Check External Cabling:
Try switching out audio signal or data transmission cables for working spares If experiencing interference in only one channel of a multi-channel system, swap the channel cables Move AC power cables as far away as possible from audio and digital cables, and eliminate parallel runs where possible Swap compatible AC power cables or switch them out for a working spare Check Electrical Wiring:
Obtain and use an AC wall socket tester (usually available for less than $10); if issues are found, try a different outlet or re-wire If you do not have a socket tester, try plugging your system into another outlet, preferably a kitchen or bathroom GFCI outlet, which are generally required to be grounded by code STEP 3: Solutions and Workarounds
    Audio Settings:
Disable microphone gain or effects in the Windows Sound and Audio Devices Properties Test different sampling rates in the Windows Sound and Audio Devices Properties; for example 16 vs 24 bit, 44.1kHz vs 192kHz. Audio Device Conflict:
Disable unused audio devices in the Windows Sound and Audio Devices Properties OR Windows Device Manager
This includes the HDMI audio output included on many GPUs Disable unused recording devices in the Windows Sound and Audio Devices Properties OR Windows Device Manager Peripherals:
Try peripherals in different USB ports Add-on Cards:
Move add-on cards, including GPU, and ensure they are properly seated Re-seat auxiliary power cables Use different power harness combinations if available from power supply Ensure that motherboard and IO plate are properly seated (grounded) Disable SLI and remove one card; re-boot and re-enable SLI Software:
Disable unnecessary startup programs and services, especially those that are audio-related
Exercise caution; some startup items might be essential to the proper function of your computer Drivers/BIOS:
Flashing the BIOS or changing the CMOS can cause the memory and PCI performance to improve. Occasionally, this can cause performance to degrade. For more information about specific versions or for information about updates, please contact your motherboard manufacturer.
Download and install latest audio drivers from motherboard manufacturer website
You may need to use a beta driver or even downgrade in some situations Download and install latest graphics drivers from GPU manufacturer website
You may need to use a beta driver or even downgrade in some situations Remove and reinstall default Windows audio drivers (uninstall device and scan for hardware changes in Windows Device Manager) Update other device drivers from motherboard manufacturer website
For unused devices (SATA controllers, etc): Uninstall driver and disable device in BIOS or Windows Device Manager Update motherboard BIOS using latest downlaod from motherboard manufacturer website (use caution) Ensure that SATA devices are not conflicting with PCI memory resources. Changing to a different controller may help. Internal Cabling:
Re-route AND/OR add shielding to the front audio header cable Try different power harness combinations from the power supply: for example, if using two PCIe power cables for a GPU, try a single cable with a splitter (if available) External Cabling:
Move audio signal and data cables away from power cables and AC lines and/or ensure they intersect at 90 degree angles Use properly shielded 2.0 spec USB cables for audio: Tripp Lite USB 2.0 Hi-Speed A/B Cable with Ferrite Chokes Belkin Gold Series USB A to B Cable Replace defective AC power cables Tripp Lite Heavy Duty Computer Power Cord 14AWG 15A Verify that all wall-powered peripherals are plugged into the same outlet via an EMI/RFI filtered power strip See below under "Electrical wiring/Ground loop" for a more robust line filtering solution Electrical Wiring/Ground Loop:
