Thinking of getting the new flight sim. 2 problems: 1. not sure how well my PC would handle it, and 2. I might need to free up an SSD or buy a new one just for that game

Yeah recommend would be an i5 8400 or 1500X. It's a 150GB download so you not only need at least that amount of space free on your Drive but also a Stable Internet connection because the whole movement of the planes in game is actually also happening in real time:
