  1. Perhaps, but that would still not be a valid reason for this hit piece. I personally also think that the TMB issue was overblown. LTT merch is specifically for LTT subscribers, they aren't exactly marketing to the average Joe. So, in my opinion any person subscribed to them for any length of time could see that LTT is passionate about providing good products, so in my mind, the TMB guarantee is worth more than most normal guarantees. But hey, personal opinion. Call me a fanboy, but I personally believe that Linus tries to act with integrity and that filters through to his company.
  2. I'm from South Africa and we have been struggling with rolling blackouts for literal years. (For reference: South African energy crisis - Wikipedia - YES I know its Wikipedia, but its actually pretty accurate and easy to corroborate) My suggestion: A video about alternative ways of powering your tech cheaply. So many people focus on Jackeries, solar, and all kinds of options, but a vast majority of them are not possible for us in SA. The demand for solar and alternative energy is so high that most of us can't afford it. Maybe a fun video of hacking together a system running off batteries? Especially for us homelabbers (Yes, we exist in SA as well)
  3. I'm truly excited to see the changes in store now that you can focus on the creative side of the business again. I smiled when it was announced, because I sorely missed your involvement in that area of the business. (Not that you were not involved, but you what I mean). Go for gold, I can't wait!
  4. No, because journalists ask for comments on stories from the subjects of those stories. Addressing both sides of a story is important. GN refers to themselves as journalists, which means that they need to provide accurate information, and a lot of what I saw in that video was his opinions stated as facts. Sure, a lot of it was valid, but him deciding unilaterally what their motivations were was not fair
  5. Personally, I feel that GN could have handled this a whole lot better than they did. Sure, raise issues that you feel are necessary, but surely asking LTT for a comment would've been a logical step as well? Look, I know LTT is not perfect, but I truly believe that they are trying and I don't for a second buy into the conspiracy that they are only in it for the money. They could've cashed out probably more than once if that was the case. Sure, its a business, but the passion in their work is palpable. Do they make mistakes? Sure. I mean, as a network engineer I sometimes want to scream at my monitor when they get something wrong, but then I remember that not everyone could get everything right and we're all along for the journey of them discovering and learning about tech, not because Linus is the infallible authority on all things technological. Obviously they are working on their processes, especially with regards to the Lab and the testing methodology. Its a work in progress, and they have been quite open about it. (Also, saying that they affect the purchasing decisions is true, but I also remember more than one occasion where Linus stresses the need to view multiple reviews and only then form your opinion.) Then comes the Billet Labs debacle. Sure, this is definitely not ideal. A real blunder, in fact. But need I remind anyone that people make mistakes? Sure, this is bad, but the amount of people saying that it was intentional and that LTT did not care obviously have not spent any real time watching these hosts. Also, who cares what steps are taken to resolve this? If Billet is willing to take monetary compensation for the accidental auctioning of this item, surely that is their prerogative? In the end, they are the ones who decide if they are happy with the steps taken to resolve this, not all of us. After all, it was their prototype. Personally, this has left a really bad taste in my mouth with regards to GN, especially because Steve insinuated constantly about Linus' (and the LTT team's) motivation for doing things. Not suggesting it, but outright saying why he and his team are making certain decisions. I feel that it is incredibly unfair and in bad taste. @LinusTech I hope that the rest of you and your team's day is better, and I'm sorry for this. Y'all deserved better.
  6. That was my first thought as well but for the life of me I can't get it to boot. Literally downloaded the netboot image for Ubuntu now and I'm burning that to a CD (Which is the only optical media which I have left, and SA is in lockdown for the next three weeks) now to see if I can get that booted off the CD drive at least
  7. Good day ladies and gents! I have an IBM x3650 M4 with 2 x Xeon E5-2640, 128GB RAM, GTX 1060 6GB,and 4 x 1.92TB SSDs. I wanna use this as an everyday workstation just for the heck of it, but I'm having some issues. I'm not sure whether its an IRQ conflict or something stranger, but everything runs fine except when I watch a video or listen to music. When I do, the system has tiny microstutters every few seconds, probably every 10 to 20 seconds where the audio hitches for literally a split second (and the display sometimes when watching video). I'm using a Corsair Void Wireless connected via USB, but its not unique to this adapter. It does exactly the same with an XBox controller and a pair of headphones. Its less prevalent when using the HDMI audio of the GTX1060, but not completely gone. The system is currently running Windows 10 Pro for Workstations (at great cost, might I tell you), but the error isn't limited to just this. It occurs on the normal Windows 10 Pro build as well as Windows Server 2016/2019. Any ideas / fixes? Please, I'm desperate here
  8. I used RSync in the office, so hopefully the -c option does the trick. I'll run it in a few minutes and see what it does Thanks!
  9. Hey guys, Okay, so I have a slight issue. I'm busy backing up data from one HP Prolient Microserver to another using Rsync over SSh. Problem is, the internet connection is pretty dismal (usually less than 1mbps upload in the office), so I thought it would be best to run the initial backup in the office and then just incremenal backups over the web, as the amount of data that changes on a daily basis isn't too much. Now here is where I hit my first issue: The Rsync does fine in the office and over the web, however, it seems to not see the files I copied in the office, so it wants to copy the entire bulk of files again, which is going to take ages. Am I just doing something wrong, or is it just the way Rsync is designed? If I run the backup in the office over the local network again, it just copies the changed files, so its definitely working in that regard. It just seems the change in the address of the rsync command causes the change to occur. The one server is running FreeNAS and the secondary server to which the data is copied runs Ubuntu Server.
  10. Heya Yeah its being resilvered, because we replaced one of the drives, so its copying the data over, but since the other guy messed around with it, we can't access any of the files, which we could access eevn though only one drive was available
  11. Good afternoon! Okay, so I'm doing some work for a company, and they called me today. Apparently someone who thought he was in IT managed to completely mess up a ZFS Pool, which I now have to try to recover. The server is just a basic file server, running NAS4Free, with two 4TB drives in a mirrored ZFS pool. Could anyone spare a few minutes of their time to assist me? It was functioning earlier and we could access files, so I went to fetch a hard drive to offload the files to, but during that time whatever he did made wuite a mess and now we can't access anything
  12. Okay, so this is a weird question, and if I'm being stupid, please tell me. I have a second house which has its own internet connection, but its almost 700 miles away. On the network, I have a Raspberry Pi 3B connected via wifi and I have Remot3.it installed, which gives me a remote shell and access on any port I want. The issue is that I want to remotely access the router and change some settings, so I literally just want to access its webgui for a moment and then set up a remote port to access it directly in the future. I could install the Pixel desktop and then VNC into it to open firefox, but the connection is slow and I was hoping to skip all that hassle. Do any of you perhaps have an idea for me?
  13. The landlord doesn't mind us installing things, as long as it doesn't actually cost her any money, so if I can get an old PC set up as a pfSense router, it should work just fine. Now just to search for an old PC and some storage!
  14. I actually thought about installing pfSense on an old PC and using it to cache the network, but I need approval from the owners of the complex first, so I wanted to check first. Money is pretty tight, so whatever we decide to do has to be as cheap as possible. I don't always have the know-how to set the stuff up, but I'm a quick learner, so thanks for the ideas
