  1. Seems really hard to find solid info. Everyone seems to say that it's very loud, but is that the initial cards, or would it be the same on models like the Sapphire? Reviews are also kinda weird. They'll mention that it's about the same performance as a 2080 (winning some, losing some), but then say that it's overpriced because it's the same price? What? And then some reviews will mention that it may be better for workstation tasks, but then go on to say there's no reason to get it over a 2080. Either way, I suppose I'll probably have to wait a couple days. Stock is low these days, so I suppose I'll have to do some more research in the meantime and see it it's worth getting one over an EVGA 2080.
  2. To be honest I am considering the Radeon VII now that I look at it. I've also had very good experiences with Sapphire cards in the past. (Mine broke and they literally sent me one twice as powerful when they didn't have to.) I'm also not too concerned about realtime ray tracing. My bigger concern would be temp so I'll have to look into that.
  3. Yeah, but which model specifically? I know there can be drastic differences from one to the next these days. Also given the price in CDN I'd say I'm not looking at a ti. More then I'm looking to spend I think.
  4. I initially figured I'd get a 1080, but then saw the RTX prices and they don't seem that different. Around $1000 CDN, which RTX card should I be looking at? (Which make and model specifically, and before the diminishing returns hit.) The thought of researching each one makes me die inside so I'm hoping there's been a clear cut winner recently.
  5. Thanks!, that more or less answers any questions I would have had. Now I just need to decide between the 500gb and the 1tb, but that's something I've gotta decide for myself.
  6. Well, there are two things that I deal with that make me think I might benefit from the faster speed. 1. Loading, compiling, and saving Game project files (Upgrading from an Intel i5 2500k to a Ryzen 7 2700x only sped up compiling slightly, so I'm hoping a faster SSD will have more of an impact) 2. Loading Kontakt libraries in music production, for which loading is directly tied to how fast your hard-drive is. Storage space isn't a huge deal for me, since my game projects aren't big, they just have a lot of files, which makes file transfers time consuming. Kontakt libraries are large, but I only ever use a few big ones. For PCI slots, all I'd ever have is a graphics card, so that would only be an issue if the graphics card also uses multiple slots (which I also don't know enough about).
  7. I'm currently looking at M.2 SSDs, however I'm a little confused about what my options are, the motherboard specs seem to imply that there are two M.2 slots, but that they are different http://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/X470 Taichi/index.asp I've also seen it mentioned that M.2 SSDs "use" PCI slots (aside from using an adapter), which I don't really understand. So in the 200-300$ range which M.2 cards should I be getting, and what can I use in either slot?
  8. Gotcha, good to know. Thanks for the input guys, I ordered the two of em. What happens when they get here will probably be a whole other story, from the sounds of it. Having a good motherboard should help though.
  9. Well, I don't doubt that it works on the X370, because it's on that list. https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X370 Taichi/#Memory How reliable are the lists? I also see that on the x470 nothing goes higher than 3200, but on the x370 it does. Can't imagine that would be accurate.
  10. I'm currently buying parts for an upgrade, and I've decided to get a Ryzen 7 2700X I quickly decided on a motherboard and got to deciding on ram, when I started seeing info about Ryzen and ram clockspeeds. While I'm not worried about being on the cutting edge in every regard, it seems like hitting that 3200 speed with ram is the goal with Ryzen and has tangible benefits. Many places recommend this ram (G-skill Flare X) https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232530&ignorebbr=1 And this motherboard (AsRock Taichi x470) https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157835&ignorebbr=1 However when I checked the QVC list, that particular model didn't seem to be on it, and only one G-skill model is even listed as hitting 3200. https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X470 Taichi/index.asp#Memory There's also ram on that list that says it supports 3200, but the chip is Hynix. (And all I know about chipsets is Hynix bad, Samsung B-die good) What the hell is a ram chipset. I'm down a rabbit hole I dont understand. Please send help... Is that Mobo and ram combination good for a Ryzen 2700X? Is there something else I should be getting instead? Edit: I ended up getting the two, and they work at full speed. Just make sure to change the profile in the Bios to get the full 3200 speeds, as they default to lower speeds.
  11. Well, the good thing about making games entirely by yourself is that there are no job applications. I can't imagine ever wanting to work in the industry, especially these days. That said, I'm an animator first, composer/sound designer second, game designer third, and....pseudo programmer last. I don't think I'd be working as a programmer any time soon.
  12. *shrugs*, I'm not really into the whole open source for the sake of open source thing. When it comes to pixel art I, use Aseprite because it has everything I want, was inexpensive, and has a good developer who listens to feedback and updates it. At the end of the day, I'm getting a good product, supporting further development from a developer I respect, and enhancing my workflow. Open is source is cool, but the second it doesn't let me assign a hotkey I need, I'm out the door with a wallet in my hand.
  13. Well, I make games with it for a living, and I've yet to encounter anything I want to do that I can't do, so I have no plans of switching. I don't really see any advantage to switching to Gadot, given my experience in GM and the sorts of games I make. I would probably switch to Unity once I want to do 3d, though. Can't do that until I have enough saved up to go a year or two without releasing anything and have the time to learn Unity.
  14. Game Maker Studio 2 I'd make a joke about how GM is somehow less credible, but then my entire career revolves around it so here we are.
  15. Thanks, I'll see if I can get an answer about the core usage.
