The support for NICs actually depends on the DiskStation Manager (DSM) system, no matter what Synology has shown on their compatibility lists. I read an article from GXNAS (written in Chinese) describing all NICs supported by DSM 6.2+, including Intel X540, X550 and X710 families. Intel has also been one of the best supported NIC vendors in Linux or its distros, including DSM.😉

Go with the x550-T2 as it supports 2.5/5 gigabit speeds in addition to 1 and 10 gig without issue. The x540 doesn't have native 2.5/5g support and it working is hit or miss.

This is my 2c. I would reviews and make sure it is covered under ebays money back policy.
(Just a quick look on ebay)
    I saw this 3080

If you do go for the 4060Ti ( I would make sure it has 16gb)

I think the 4070 is over priced.

    Just my thoughts
    Good luck!!

Go to eBay and get an old office pc:

Whatever fits the budget, the coffee lake ones are pretty cheap, sometimes you can get them for even cheaper. eBay sellers kit them out as ready to use ordeals.

Plug it into whatever monitor with the remaining budget and you’re good to go.
No point in DIYing something like this, especially not on AM3. (Am3 in 2023????)

As long as it physically fits on the board's socket it should work. The case's connector is just a cable and doesn't have a specific version, even if it is advertised as such.

Make sure the connector is seated properly. Otherwise check the cable for possible damage.

So, after alot of trial an error, I was able to put nixos on my old macbook. as I still wanted to continue using it.
How ever some of the hardware doesn't seem to be running correctly or not at all. I am suspecting it could be the driver not properly being "installed" or using a basic driver.
It says there are no sound devices installed. But I can get sound but I can not change any of the settings. wifi keeps cutting and not stable etc

No exacly. 1 is the file types. aka mp3 mp4 etc. For this one I am surgesting. converting the files to a file type that is recognized by the player.
3 is the usb formating aka NTFS. for this one. A complete format of the usb to a format that the player can read.

If it is a budgeting. And you are not in a rush. I would seriously go for used parts. Depending on pricing, you can certainly get better bang for the buck. Linus has a ton of videos on this, he even had a series call scrap yard wars. Just make sure that the stuff works. I would go the ebay option. As you have protections. at least the last time I went shopping for used parts

Yea, 6800 is fine. 6800xt has better ray tracing. they are very similiar. the xt just means it is a more powerful ( not always by a lot). In this case just a bit.

No, just like the other guy said. you fine with a 7600. If this was 20 years ago. that might have been the case. even then it was possible. but with the set up you have there. you golden for anything and everything.  I would even dare say some ( not at awesome frames) 4k gaming. 1440p Yes.
CPU tells you what you can run ( as long as it is younger than 10 years you should run almost anything )
Ram tells you how many things you can run
    (that is an over simplification)

This is just wrong, CPU does not dictate how many apps could be run at a time. RAM does, CPU does affect the performance, but in this hardware class, R5 7600 is more than enough,

It will most probably work, the 5800X3D with all that cache is quite efficient.  If it doesn`t go into the Bios and set it to ECO mode, which will set it to more or less the same power budget your 3700X has right now. Since its biggest plus is the cache, it should still be faster than a 5600X.

Just overclock your 3700x, though ive heard earlier samples struggle getting past 4.2g whereas later cpus can do abit over 4.5ghz

as for voltages you can set either 1.3v or 1.4v llc off (so itll vdroop to around 1.25/1.35v under load), usually around 1.3v is best for v/f aka efficiency

The 3700x is still a decent chip but the 5600x is definitely a decent improvement, and is absolutely recommended if you plan on upgrading the GPU to something more powerful later. Here is a comparison, I timed it at the gaming benchmark. This is with an RTX 3090.
The 5800X3D is the best AM4 CPU for gaming and still keeps up with current gen gaming CPU's quite well.

The 5600X is definitely a noticeable upgrade. However i do feel like its a half measure and you will get superior results running the 3700X (Which is still a good CPU) and saving up the extra for a 5800X3D.

Your platform is end of life and i just think you should try to extend it as much as possible with the absolute best CPU for gaming that you can grab , It's your call either way and a 5600X is like i and others have said a nice improvement but a 3600X to a 5800X3D is going to give you a CPU that still competes with the latest gen in gaming workloads.

According to toms hardware a 3700X at max load is using 90w and a 5800X3D 110w so it does use more for sure but i doubt very much 20w will make a massive impact to your PSU wattage budget , Especially considering you will be using it for gaming and it likely wont be running at 100% utilisation most of the time.

A 550W PSU would be able to handle a 5800X3D and RTX4070 quite comfortably , Maybe even a 4070ti but that depends on what sort of quality the PSU is , You will need to stay away from AMD 7900 series and 4080 and up but you will need to upgrade your PSU for those regardless of what CPU you have.

    Hope this helped somewhat.

    EDIT : Misread OP's CPU as a 3600X , Rest still stands.

I never used NixOS, so I don't really know how their developers do things. You could try redoing the installation of it, or going into the live USB. I've used some distros that either on the live USB desktop, or as a button on the installation window present you with the ability to reinstall the bootloader. If they don't give you an option, only advice I can give is to do another installation attempt and see if that works (also I'd recommend installing to a dedicated drive, and not trying to dual boot with windows or some other distro. I have had linux installs that have broken as a result of trying to dual boot). I have had many linux installations in the past where one installation will fail, but the second time around will just magically work.

If none of that helps, honestly you should hit up NixOS' forums (if they have forums of their own). Whenever I have a problem with specific distros, I've learned that you're far more likely to get good advice and instructions on their own forums and not on this one here.

An ultrawide is essentially a 4k monitor or close to it. It's a trend that I don't personally get or like, but if you have one then you need a 4k card. going from a 1660s to a 3060 wont do you much good. If you intend on playing on an ultrawide then get a 3090,4080,4090 and maybe a 3080ti or 4070ti but don't expect much from those two after two years.

If you can't afford those cards then it's better to stick to a regular 16:9 1440p.

Are all your switches Ubiquiti or L2 capable? Vlans are created on the router and assigned tags. Those tags are then used in your switch settings to assign vlans to ports on the switch, or ssids on access points.

Tom from Lawrence Systems has videos on YouTube that can walk you through the setup on pfsense and ubiquiti.

Just a heads up, you can't really set write permissions using vlans. This has to be done using file permission settings on the NAS. Vlans merely segment out your network to make it more secure. Simply creating vlans doesn't separate your network devices. You need to create firewall rules in order to block the traffic between vlans.

A good place to start is to figure out what groups of devices you want separated then create the vlans and firewall rules.

    My vlans are:
    1. Management: for server ipmi, and NAS admin.
    2. IOT: for insecure IOT devices such as smart switches and smart home devices
    3. Guest: for guess who just need internet access.

I'm still working on my network structure, and it's difficult sometimes to decide what vlan a device should be on.
