What is a CPU core/what does it do, and what is a threads and what does it do. Benefits from having more threads and cores?

@PCGuy_5960 @LinusTechTipsFanFromDarlo Although the i7 will give more performance, I don't really think it's in my budget right now. But the motherboard is cheaper...... So the i5 7600K and the Z270 are about $390. And the i7 7700 with the B250 motherboard is about $415. Thus creating a $25 difference. So what exactly extra am I getting for that $25?

I am working on my first PC build. Mainly for gaming, a few streams, and some light video editing. I need help choosing a CPU and a Motherbaord. CPU- None Selected Yet Power Supply- None Selected yet Graphics Card- MSI GeForce GTX 1060 Gaming X 6GB 192-Bit GDDR5 Motherboard- None Selected yet. Maybe Micro ATX? Network Card+Sound Card- Motherboard must supply both of these. CPU Cooler- None Selected Yet Hard Drive- 1 to 2 TB 7200RPM. No specific one selected yet. OS- Win10 Home 64-Bit Case- None Selected Yet. Considering Thermaltake Core V21 Micro Chassis - Black Total Estimated Cost- $900 Budget: Between $875 and $1000 (Note: Perifierals not included) Others: Monitor: Already Purchesed Keybaord and Mouse: Using current I am considering getting a Intel Core i5-6600K, but that would also require a Z series motherboard, correct?
