This situation is ridiculous if I understand correctly.

Asus pays for shipping back, motherboard is not sent in original packaging but seems protected adequately. That's a thick PCB, no way it gets damaged like that from normal handling. So it either got damaged in shipping or Asus dropped it when they unpackaged it.

They said they have a video of the unboxing. Did they show it to you?

Also FedEx saying it couldn't be damaged in shipping because the receiver says the box looks ok is BS. You can drop a box from 20 feet and it'll look ok if it falls flat.

Anyone who says that the bubble wrap caused this is being ridiculous. Try to bend a corner of a motherboard. I just did with a scrap board. The bubble wrap would have torn or the box would have been damaged. There is something else going on here. Not sure if it is OP or Asus, but I can say that it wasn't bubble wrap that caused it.

2000$ GPU bundled with 1$ power adapters, what could go wrong?

Soldering multiple cables together in that small connector is stupid. The PSU cables by Corsair, Seasonic, etc. are much better than the nVidia adapter. The 12VHPWR connector is not great, but using good cables and not maxing it out to 600W for 2fps more would also help.

Good for next gen video card prices and availability.

Gaming might be useless, but not as useless as mining!

People who give deposits for a card and those buying complete systems should be put in the same queue. It would also be more transparent if they used a system where you could check your position in the waiting list.

If they want to prioritize full builds, then don't take deposits for single cards.

And people putting down 1500$ deposits should invest that money instead. By the time there's stock, you'll be able to afford a better card! 😄

My 7200rpm NAS drives get around 180MB/s to 200MB/s, but are limited by the 1G network to around 115MB/s. I'd love to upgrade for transfers between my desktop and NAS.

The Aquantia NICs are 100$ each and a Netgear GS110MX is 200$ (only need 2x 10G ports). So that's 400$ for a little time saving, not worth it yet in my case. My next desktop upgrade I'll get a motherboard with integrated 10G, and by that time the switches should be cheaper.

Your computer can do 2 monitors (1 VGA and 1 HDMI).

If you're already using the HDMI, just find a second monitor with VGA input.

Onboard graphics + a video card that supports 4 monitors. My motherboard can do 3 displays from the Intel CPU + my GTX 1660 Ti can do 4 = 7 total for me.

If your motherboard doesn't have enough, then 2 GPUs. I think the cheapest that'll do 4 monitors is a GTX 1660.

I've seen this before, best way to avoid it 100% is to install Windows with only the OS drive plugged in. After Windows is installed, add secondary drives.

What's the budget? If it's just for file sharing on a low budget, get a Synology 2 or 4 bay NAS. A Synology DS218j is 220$, and HGST 4TB NAS drives are 140$ each. Total is 500$ canadian for 4TB in RAID1. Also get a 4TB portable USB drive (150$) for backups.

Don't use motherboard RAID. Set it up in software (mdadm in Linux....).

I'd also recommend the Synology. Easy to set up, and very reliable.

One of my clients has an older model (415+ I think), and they have 30 people accessing it. It's in RAID10 with 4x4TB drives, but for home use I'd probably go BTRFS with Synology Hybrid RAID so you don't lose as much space.

For UPS, they have a Cyberpower CP1000PFCLCD hooked up to it.

Spicedaddy got a reaction from newgeneral10 in What do I need to run home webserver/nas
For the NAS: Try to find older hardware. I built one from parts I had laying around: Core 2 Duo E7200, 4GB ram, P35 mobo, a few hard drives. I installed OpenMediaVault on it and it does everything I need. If you don't want to bother, you can buy a Synology with 2 or 4 hard drives and run RAID-1 or RAID-10.

For the webserver, I'd get a Shared Hosting account at HawkHost for 3$/month.
