Vonplaf got a reaction from GOTSpectrum in HPE SIM and Disc service hours reported ?
Well ok then... it looks not as bad as the other running server I found...
I have been running backups and service hours on some of those discs are in the +90000 hours

So I asked management about all this and the age of the serverss and the reply... well if it aint broke dont fix it....
SOOO think I got my work cut out for me.. and have a lot of work to do in getting the whole place updated on the hardware side of things...

    WOOooooooo

I skipped class to spam F5, so I could score a Whale LAN ticket. Linus and Luke had hyped it up plenty since last year's success. I had never attended a LAN event or LTX before, so I was stoked when I was able to buy my ticket.

The expo was a bigger priority for me than the LAN, so there was no way I was skipping that just to play some games. Now, this is a me problem, but I'm quite introverted. I had no clue what was going on except for the tournaments since they were announced. By the time I got out of my shell and figured out how to get into games, it was already midnight. I was able to play some Halo: CE and CoD: MW3 (neither of which I had ever played multiplayer before), but by 3 am it was all crickets. I was under the impression that the previous Whale LAN ran overnight which was the only reason I even bought a ticket. Linus and Luke have repeatedly said to never preorder stuff. Safe to say, buying a ticket without knowing the schedule felt like a preorder.

There was also practically no camaraderie that again, I had gotten my hopes falsely up because of listening to the WAN Shows. I had a lot of time to observe others around me and Whale LAN was incredibly fragmented. A great number of people were playing singleplayer games, hoarding their ticket. These tickets, including mine, should have gone to more deserving people which maybe would've made the LAN a better experience.

On top of that, the physical stuff like scavenger hunts and IRL Mario Kart were hopeless to get into for me and so were the tournaments. Overall, I had a pretty miserable time counting down the hours for Day Two of the expo to begin watching people hoard the Quest 2's on the stage. My biggest takeaway from the LAN was most humans like to sleep and can't stay up all night, whereas I stayed up 76 hours (sans caffeine) to attend the Expo, which itself was a blast even if the lines were long. I guess LANs are just not for me.

Yep for sure... but sometimes you just wanna see if it works and it looks like it does.

but gonna print with some ABS sometime next week just to be sure, but the screws i am pretty sure will hold as they where from a older cooler setup i once used and just sawed the hardware from, you know "just in case it could be used for something else"

Solo it have been running aida64 for about an hour now and avarge temp is about 46 Celsius.. pretty good.

The adapter I printed is nowhere near getting warm as I can feel the cold air from the cooler blowing down on  both sides of the adapter I printed

So think I am gonna YOLO it and see how it will hold up over time...
Gonna re-use a old wooden ammo case I have used before as a PC case and put this thing in there just to see how it will do...

So have a cheap motherboard form Asrock with a Intel i3 4130 CPU but i did not have a CPU cooler for intel LGA1150 / LGA1151
But i did have the AMD Wraith prism cooler that came in the box with my Ryzen 7 2700X, but that is for AM4

Sooo F*** thack i will just print an adapter for the motherboard to accept the AM4 cooler on the intel socket motherboard and i dont think that the stock AMD cooler should have any problems in keeping the I3 4130 cool.

Printed in PLA (And yes i know ABS or PETG would have been better) but kinda just gonna YOLO it at the moment at see if it works.

The print file i used is this one from thingiverse.
    https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4361016
But the designer of the file did not set the correct dimensions for the object so have to scale it up to get it to the right size.
So print settings for the item in Repetier Host
    0.2mm resolution
    0.4mm nozzel
    100% infill
Scale by 9.75 to get it to the correct size.

The adapter is mounted with small screws through the adapter and secured with plastic washers and self locking nuts on the back of the board.

Anyway, not yet sure how its gonna hold up, dont have any ram to test it with, but if it works.... YAY!! and i not well POOP!!

Depending on what you’re trying to do dual 2640 v4’s are going to absolutely wipe the floor with a 2700x, and if you need a large amount of ram I mean just the numbers there are self explanatory

The M4000 versus the 2060 is where this drops off, the 2060 will be a much better card even at professional tasks over the M4000, while you lose some Quadro specific features you’re still looking at a way more powerful gpu with the 2060.

Note you can get 22 core 44 thread 2696 v4’s for about 200$ a piece, you could probably sell the rest of your system, minus the ssd snd rtx 2060, maybe sell the m4000 too, and get two 2696 v4’s at which point you’ll be running 44c/88t and can kinda just brute force multi core performance in nearly any use case

I had this happen to a mini itx build i was working on a few days ago, and I requested a new one off newegg. Thankfully there sending me a new one, but it completely baffles me why there stock thermal paste may was well be thermal glue.

For the record i had no issues whatsoever removing the stock cooler, with stock thermal paste from my 3600…

Only had one small issue with mx4 , which was solved easily by wiggling the stock cooler ever so slightly.

That said, noctua coolers are more easy to mount… doesnt stop the thermal paste from being sticky sometimes … tldr: AMD did nothing wrong, for once!

So this was an expensive learning experience..
Got new motherboard, CPU, cooler, RAM, PSU to upgrade my old rig.

So to start i set everything up on the table before fitting it all into my case and also to test if everything was working.
Installed the motherboard with the CPU, RAM, PSU and i oped to  use the stock AMD Wraith cooler while testing on the table.
And everything worked... no problem there.!!  Now i had to take the stock AMD Wraith cooler off so i could fit it all in my case with the AIO cooler there.
So i released the coolers locking taps and so on, but when i tried to remove the stock AMD cooler it felt like something was still stuck to the motherboard.

I kept working slowly and carfully trying to release the stock AMD cooler and POOF!! it was off ......... and so was the CPU, it was stuck to the stock AMD cooler, and several pins where bend.  *BEEP* *BEEPING* *BEEP*
so after yelling a shit ton and breathing exercises, i locate an scalpel and some very fine tweezers and sat down to try and correct the damage.
*BEEP*  and one freaking PIN at the corner broke completely off the rest i got corrected.
Brand new AMD Ryzen 7 2700X CPU DEAD as a Dodo.!!  All because i did not take the time to remove AMD stock thermal compound from their stock cooler as it will kinda be like thermal compound glue... *BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP*

Sooooo  digging deep in my pockets i went to a local store that had a AMD Ryzen 7 2700X in stock and got them to match the price from where i got the first one 1600DKK / approx 235 USD ... and now my new rig is running...

expensive lesson learned...  DON'T USE STOCK AMD thermal compound your CPU will almost be glued to you cooler...
And not likely that AMD or the store i got the CPU at is gonna provide warranty on the CPU that i killed due to the thermal glue sorry thermal compound.

OHH and on a side note... the NZXT Kraken M22 AIO has a mounting plate that goes on the back of the motherboard... soooo  if your using an Asus ROG Strix B450-i Gaming motherboard that plate wont fit correctly, due to the taps it has for Intel mounting hole and they will on one side of the CPU rest on the soldering spots for you bottom RAM socket and a small chip. this will result in you motherboard not posting when both RAM sockets are populated.
but its fixed by snipping those taps off for the Intel mounting hold on the mounting plate for the Kraken M22..

Again more lessons learned, even as i have been doing this stuff for over 20 years now.

BUT YAY!!!!!! my new rig is running, but *BEEP* *BEEPING* *BEEP* i am beat...

Picture... the last pin on the outer row is gone!!!

Have HWinfo running from time to time to monitor the temps when my son was playing fortnite of the thing and GPU and CPU did spike at 75 degree celsius
But the back of the laptop that normally have the plastic grill infront of the heatsink i have cut away as they some of it where brokken off to start with, this opens up more for the heat to exit the cooler.

I have also removed a plate that are on the bottom of the laptop that would normally cover up an 2.5" SSD but as this laptop dont use that kind of drive it now have a hole larger than the drive in the back where heat also can escape from
And i also cleaned the heatsinks, fans and applied new thermal paste

Nice project, seems like a success!
Actually only recently for me I had a similar chance to restore a defective laptop, it also was an Acer Aspire model. I still recall it had an i7, 8GB RAM and GTX 1050. No HDD, no SSD, broken screen, missing keyboard keys, but still a WiFi card. The thing was, the GTX 1050 was defective.
The seller said he wanted to throw it out, since he couldn't fix it anymore nor want to spend money on it. I offered to take it from him if the price is right, but finally someone else ended up paying more than 80 Euros for it and I didn't want to take the gamble for that amount. I noticed that a GTX 1050 laptop GPU is REALLY hard to find.

Last weekend I found a broken laptop screen dead, hinges broken off and a ton of scratches and small dents in the machine.
How ever specs made it worth to see if I could get it working again.
    Acer Aspire laptop:
    Intel Core i5 7300HQ
    16GB DDR4 ram
    Nvidia GTX 1050 2GB
Intel 256 GB m.2 NVME SSD

So got it all taken apart, cleaned and looked over for defects and the lid for the dead screen also cleaned up and bend into shape as to be a cover for the machine.
Fixed up a 135W PSU whit the correct plug and designed and 3D printed some feet for it to be mounted vertically behind my TV.

There is no build in wifi card at the moment af the wifi antennas where torn off when the screen died so anyway now it just plugged in with an ethernet cable ..

So BOOM and a new livingroom PC for games and media consumption on the TV.
