There are limitation with the SODIMM form factor that DDR5 has started to come up against. The only way to get the fastest DDR5 ram in a laptop is either have it soldered, or it uses the new CAMM standard (which only 2 Dell laptops do currently).

I recently got the Legion 7i 16ITHg6 and am genuinely blown away by its power, however I was very un-impressed with the ram situation as I found the performance pretty unacceptable for the price of the laptop.
    Before even receiving the laptop I purchased the G.SKILL RipJaws Series 32gb (2x16GB) 3200mhz CL18 DDR4 F4-3200C18D-32GRS kit to replace the stock Samsung DDR4 3200 CL22 RAM.

I read around for a while on unlocking the mythical advanced bios, tried all key combinations read every post watched every youtube I could find, all to no avail, it only worked on earlier models was the consensus. Then a random god send on the Lenovo forum sent me a link to a windows app that one click unlocks your advanced BIOS for most Lenovo laptops, within a minute I was into the advanced BIOS and boy are there a lot of options there! Including enabling XMP!

    https://www.win-raid.com/t9926f16-TOOL-Lenovo-H-Bios-Unlocker-and-Locker.html

I hope this helps anyone else as it was driving me nuts having performance sitting on the table and not being able to use it.

EDIT: I have since changed RAM to Gear Mode 1 for better latency, 83.9ns down to 64ns and +2/3% read write speeds.

After using the one click BIOS unlocker for Windows the Advanced menu is available.

Finally having XMP settings and many many more manual settings (I ended up selecting manual everything)

The Stock Samsung DDR4 3200 @ CL22 RAM that came with the laptop - SLOW (Take note I updated BIOS and slightly different overclock from here on, it was unrelated and does not effect scores)

The new G.SKILL 3200 CL18 RAM with basic BIOS and default settings, laptop only allows it to run CL22+ with basic BIOS.

XMP Enabled with CL18 on the advanced BIOS! - FAST

You use to do awesome and funny build logs and educate me on liquid cooling, but now, this? For OP, disable your onboard audio codec in the bios, reinstall the latest drivers for the DAC, and set it as the default output device in windows. Can we get the model of the DAC and some system specs.

I had an issue with occasional hissing from my soundcard when I had the "allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" options disabled.

Check your idle temps if they are fairly high then you very likely will need to remount the CPU block due to a bad mount but at 1.350V temps do start to climb steeply.

It is complete, well for now Cabling has been completed although i'm not too happy with it. There is a huge excess of default evga cabling that I somehow hid in the side section yet it looks very ugly, also the cables for the gpu and motherboard are pushed up against the front face which isn't amazing but its hidden when the lids closed so I don't mind. I need to get some custom sleeving done but haven't found anyone to do it (send me some recommendations please <3). I still need to find a place for my WD Black 4tb somewhere but I will sort that out later. I will do another update with benchmarks, overclocks and temperatures. I don't own many games so there will only be a few game benchmarks but I will be better off to wait until I get 4k screens, for now I will be using my 1080p benq monitor and use nvidia dsr until then. Hope you guys enjoy and this is basically the major work done

*misspelled purposefully to be the first result in google searches for "lightcanon"

Welcome to my custom flashlight build log!
The LightCanon is an aspheric lens flashlight designed for maximum throw.

Called "lightcanon" instead of "lightcannon" so that its easier to find on google, and also because I forgot cannon has two ns instead of one...

"Throw" is the distance the light beam can reach. In this case, a high power LED combined with a lens will give us a highly concentrated beam of light, theoretically reaching over 1500m ANSI throw distance.
The total cost of the project approximates almost $400 in parts.

    Parts list:

    -Adhesive black-out material

-Cree XP-G2 LED mounted on a Noctigon 20mm board

-Fasttech 100mm 5-120 degree aspheric lens

    -Fasttech V10+ 5A LED driver

    -Wavien RLT large collar

    -Intel BXTS13A heatsink

    -Arctic Silver Alumina thermal adhesive

    -1S-6S LiPO battery voltage indicator

    -Associated Reedy 1S 3.7V 8000mAh 70C LiPO battery

    -100mm PVC sewer pipe

-assortment of cables, connectors, and switch

-thin 80mm 5V computer fan (from a laptop cooling pad)

    The goal:

I am confident that this flashlight will be able to reach this distance, as other people using similar hardware have already reached this and more.
When the flashlight is finished we will really see how far it can go...

^ it says 1200m (almost 4000ft) at the bottom center

toastfacegrillah reacted to For Science! in Do manufacturers need to document their coolants Better?
This is going to be a bit lengthy so buckle down.

It has recently been brought to my attention that documentation surrounding the safety and contents of typical watercooling pre-mix coolants to be inconsistent, inadequate, and sometimes outright incorrect. I'm going to be firing in particular to Mayhems and EKWB because that's the ones I've been looking at so far, but I am sure it is a widely spread practice (or lack thereof). I would love to hear the opinions of Industry Affiliates @EK Luc, don't know if there is a Mayhem's affiliate here, I've tried to ask their company but failed to get through so far.

Before the distilled water community come chorusing in about their superiority, I would quickly mention that this technically applies any common additives as well; so unless you are running literally only water, this applies to you too.

It all started with a minor inconsistency observation about the Mayhems Pastel Extreme 100ml that clearly stated on their product page (all information shown here was true at least on the 4th of July 2017)

which is fair enough, however I noticed in the safety documentation sheet (SDS) the next inconsistency:

So clearly, this coolant is supposedly 99.8% ethylene glycol (commonly used antifreeze) which is not "that safe". However the more disturbing thing is that firstly, the SDS states rather boldly that the product "Can be disposed of down normal waste drain" in clear contradiction to their product webpage. It is also strange that the two components of concern, zinc oxide and titanium oxide, do not feature at all in the safety data sheet. There are many instances like this within the Mayhems series of coolants - but this was the most striking.

In EKWBs case, this was more of inconsistencies, where the 100ml concentrate show 3 components:

where the pre-diluted 900ml mix only documents 1 component

This brings into question really, how many more components are in these pre-mixes sold by companies, and generally brings into question the usefulness of the SDS they provide if so much information is hidden. If Mayhems want to claim all their things are non-toxic because its 99% glycerol, and thats what they document (for example), and not talk about the nasty 1 %, that is not very good practice in my opinion.

Now I suspect the most of this is going to be answered with "its so dilute that its not worth writing down", but we should all be aware that it is not necessarily the concentration of a chemical that determines whether it should make it into a SDS. If it clearly at a concentration that carries out its function, then I believe it should be noted. Unless of course the companies would like to admit that they are actually operating on the basis of homeopathy.

My opinion is that since we as an end-user of these product (I personally am using the EK-CryoFuel and very happy with the results), but we really should be allowed to know what is actually going on inside these coolants and be provided with good quality information. Please do not get me wrong, I will still continue to recommend people to use pre-mixes over homebrewed solutions (-insert toothpaste argument here-), I just feel more information would make it even easier for me to wholeheartedly recommend these products.

    Thanks for your attention.

Firstly, it is actually very important for you as an end-user to understand the consequences that a product can have on you, as well as the environment. "The environement" maybe something that you may not care about in the grand scheme of things (which I feel is irresponsible, but is unlikely that you as an individual will be held accountable for), but I feel that it is important that you are given the chance to make the correct decision with regards to handling and disposal routes. In a coorporate situation (yes, companies are allowed to watercool PCs too) the company can be held accountable if they are found out dumping nasty stuff down their drains.

Secondly, it also allows you as a buyer to find out if you are being sold just pure nonsense. If you look at the SDS of the Mayhems X1:
    http://mayhems.net/sds/pastel/1ltr/pastel_white_1_ltr_sds.pdf
You will see that according to this document, this coolant is supposedly, 10 % glycerol + 89% water. 10% glycerol alone is an excellent medium for growing bacteria and algae (we do quite frequently in the lab). Clearly the unaccounted 1% is whats doing the business, but how am I to compare one product from another if they are all "10 % glycerol". Listing out the active ingredient will allow you as a buyer to make an informed decision as to which coolant to buy, how long that biocide or corrosion inhibitor is likely to last, etc.

Sure I accept most buyers do not go this far, but then you might as well be buying snake oil and be none the wiser.
