I have a spare 7700k with 32GB non ecc ram
about 8 WD Reds
Network is Cat 5 gigabit Ethernet.
Would like to create a windows server or gaming / plex backup data and want to drag and drop files to my server as well for a backup
maybe someone could tell me what else i could do with this server as well. I can get windows 2017 server if need be but not sure if that is any b etter than just using windows 10.
There is no multiple users or need a mail server.
My main computer has a 8 bay media sonic which i will use for my movie plex drive off my main computer, so when i run plex my main PC will be on , i will also be doing most of my gaming on this computer as well
From my research NAS is great for a backup drive and cloud networking. I could care less about the cloud right now . If really wanting a file i think i can transfer files through remote desktop anyway.
I want to use raid and need recommendations for which card would benefit me and a card to take advantage of a WD Red drive running at 5400rpm
Forgot to mention i see alot of older raid cards on ebay very cheap like LSI megaraid etc which i heard is the best , which card would give me the most bandwidth at raid 6. Using Raid 10 for me right now is not beneficial due to limited space. I need at least 40TB of raid storage.
I also will be using SSDs for my boot drive and would prefer Raid 6 on my raid card using SAS 8 port. I am not concerned about automatic backups if this matters
So should i get a synology or qnap type raid or make a windows server?
Thanks!
