orangefurball got a reaction from joshua286 in What is so bad about Alienware Laptops?
I was asking about laptops, and I haven't had any issues with Dell's tech support in the past.
I was looking at MSi, but my last experience with their laptops was the Wind U100 netbook (which was one of my favorite almost useless computers)
If I was looking to buy a desktop, I would listen to this video. Thank you though
Thank you for actually reading my post!
The laptop pricing seems pretty competitive tbh
Sounds like it should be RMAed. Definately not something he should be dealing with. Is this known to be a widespread issue?
I'm not asking about desktops, I already built my own.
Any recommendations? I'm not looking for a beast, just something that lets me game on the go. I do most of my gaming on my desktop anyway.
I am not talking about desktops.
I have a desktop. I am not looking for a new desktop. The gaming laptop is just an extra computer to game on the go.
That being said, I used to have an ASUS G60VX gaming laptop before I built my desktop, so I know the drawbacks.
I'll try this out. I was going referb, no point in buying brand new if I am not going to use it every day.
That's a pretty subjective opinion. I have no issue with Dell, I even said so in my original post.
That's what I thought.
Good to hear. I have no issues with plastic laptops. If I wanted a metal one I would be spending more, but it's just not worth it.
Well there is his problem.
Thanks, I'll check those out.
Compared to some other laptops, they are pretty low key. Not a big deal for me though!
That seems to be more about desktops.
Thanks for the info!
If anyone wants to make any more posts in here, please make sure it is about laptops. I am part of the build-your-own-desktop-don't-give-money-to-AW master race, but I am referring to laptops. Already have a desktop.
Thanks!

Sorry for the triple post lol, this thread is just an absolute mess.
I personally would go for the Alienware, Lenovo has been a lot more sketchy than Dell lately.
And the build quality is probably nicer on the Alienware. It's no longer real aluminum on the back, but it's still some metal or other, unlike the carbon on the Y40 which i find cheapy to use. There is also really bad key travel on the Y40 last i checked, and over all, the build is less than fantastic. They fixed these issues on the Y50, but they don't appear to have addressed my issues with the Y40.
The keyboard on the AW is more of a pseudo mechanical, it's crisper than the typical laptop keyboard, and has much more travel than the Y40.
If i were you, i'd get the AW. The specs are similar, as is the price. You just have to deal with the stigma of owning an Alienware laptop

You should make a bit of profit off that AMD card you already have. A 750ti would probably be a pretty good bet.

My friend setup a proxy that allowed him to stream games from his computer at home to a different network, therefore allowing him to play games everywhere with a network connection, with and I'm not kidding NO LAG. My school's internet speed is 3 down 5 up. Which is insane since there is no lag.

I guess 300Mbps is enough cool.

Not bad at all actually. I only notice it alongside other heavy network usage.

orangefurball reacted to AMICLG in NVIDIA Shield + GTX 650 Ti.. worth it?
Really, hows the lag, I'm getting a shield when I upgrade my computer, I'll have to do some testing with my Nighthawk.
-
orangefurball reacted to TheSLSAMG in NVIDIA Shield + GTX 650 Ti.. worth it?
False. I have a Shield and an 802.11 N router and I can stream just fine.
-
orangefurball reacted to AMICLG in NVIDIA Shield + GTX 650 Ti.. worth it?
I would get a 750ti it can play almost any game a 720p at preset ultra but for the shield to be able to use game stream you HAVE to have your computer plugged into your router and your router needs to have 867Mbps AC or faster or the shield will not let you stream games.

Either 660 or a 750Ti is what I'd recommend

Well.. She's done!
I couldn't get the lighting right tonight for pictures, so I'll post the final results.
Its not perfect, however as I said yesterday I am making another Mac Pro lookalike. I almost have my plans complete. So once funds come in she will be well on her way.
Probably my favorite part is this.
A glowing Apple! When I originally made the drawing for the back cover, I decided to stick an apple in a blank spot and figure out what to do later. Then one day I looked at my Plexus glass and it hit me. I saided the back of a piece of plexi glass and glued some paper to it. Then I put a power light from an old HP desktop behind it and it worked great.
The apple logo leaf looks weird, I know, but that is because the company who cut the piece didn't have a small enough tool to cut it right. At first I didn't like it, but its growing on me. You still know what it is and it fits the Hackintosh vibe, almost a Mac, but not quite. And that Apple is almost an Apple logo, but not quite.
Like i said, better pictures tomorrow. I just wanted to let everyone know the build is done!

Not much work done today, but that's because I'm finishing up. I painted the casing today. I decided to go with a glossy enamel spray paint. I was going to go matte but something about this caught my eye. Its pretty glossy too and strong.
So that's curing overnight. I also have the bottom done. I don't have any pictures, ill have some tomorrow. I couldn't put as many vents as I would have liked because my Dremel died on me part way through. I would buy a new one, but my Nexus 5 shattered yesterday as well, a phone is a higher priority than a few vents at the moment! It will still look good nonetheless.
The final step now is getting my backplate home and installed. It was cut today and is being painted tomorrow. Meaning if all goes well the build will be done tomorrow, and all that is left after that is installing OS X! There will also be a small surprise on the backplate. Here is the only hint. Any guesses?
As always, progress is being made. Thanks everyone!
I do want to say something, this will not be my last attempt at making a Mac Pro lookalike. This will however be the only one out of a garbage can though. Keep an eye out for the next Mac Pro from me. It might not be for a couple more projects, but I have already started planning after all that I learned from this one!

Just a bit of progress since the last update.
The black fan was just a crappy one I was playing around with. While it worked, it wasn't the best airflow. So I changed my design. I'm not placing a fan on top of the case.
The fan I ordered turned out to be 20mm too big, no big deal. Just cut a bigger hole!
Now the fan was still too big, so I cut the corners off. Who needs them anyway?
Perfect! Just a bit of hot glue holds it down. I also sanded down the inside of the top ring and put some bondo on then sprayed with Plasti-dip. That gave it a nice black look.
After that I sealed it all together. Its gonna be a sad day when that fan dies.
Here is an inside view of the fan. Just because.
And now a top view.
We have a problem. The top of the Mac pro looks pretty! There's not an orange fan sticking out.
With paper clips and Card Stock, we have this.
Before
After
Better right? And the best part is air passes through still, because the paper doesn't go the edge. It balances in the middle on paperclips.
Almost forgot to mention some changes to my design. The video card is ghetto-rigged. Zip tied are literally holding it up. But I did a shake test and its solid. Air still gets to the CPU and no components get anywhere near overheating.
The SSD and HDD also were unscrewed and dangle. This may be addressed, not sure. It works great still though.
This is where I'm at today.
What still has to be done,
*IO plate has to get cut (drawings are at the shop!)
*Bottom has to be done
*Paint
*OS X install.
Progress nonetheless. Still on schedule!
Edit: here's a photo of the video card setup... ...don't judge me. As I said temps were good! If changes need to be made they can be.
And the SSD and HDD

Another update. I decided to do as much prep work before getting the rest of my parts. I got the SSD installed, the top fan installed, and I have the entire thing wired up (except for the PCI-e extension)
The SSD was mounted by cutting out the top part of a plastic hard drive sled from another case, luckily mine had a spot that I could drill through to mount it to the wood.
For the fan I cut a piece of Plexiglass into a rectangle and drilled some holes in it, mounted it to the wood, then mounted the fan to it. Its crude, but fits in the can and works.
I also sanded the can down and washed it so I could paint it. I am probably going for a black with a satin look, I'm not a fan of gloss unless it could be extremely shiny. Which I know I can't do.
Now the last thing I did today was test the thing. Normally I would just make sure it would post, but I decided to take it a step further and install Windows 8 on there (and not activate it so I could still use the copy later. Mac OS X will replace the unactivated Windows 8 in a few days). It worked perfectly. Makes me wonder why people who don't need demanding systems even buy desktops anymore. This fits in a 7.5" x 4" square and stands 11" tall at the moment, yet I can still play HD video just fine.
Now cleanup for the day begins...

I've had an insane amount of progress!
First of all, motherboard mounting has been completed. The oak is directly screwed into the power supply.
Here's the motherboard on the power supply. It's just enough weight so its all balanced.
Its really solid too!
Now for the casing, a hole was cut! You will notice that the wood shows through the hole, but that is because I had to have it all symmetrical and the power supply has a longer width, however with the metal insert it'll all look clean.
Speaking of the metal insert/IO shield, it will be CNC machined out of aluminum and powder coated black. This will be done by the end of the week. I just have to draw up all the ports into a cut design. The power supply cable will be removable which is another plus of having the larger hole.
What has to be done:
*Graphics card mounting has to be arranged (waiting for the graphics card)
*SSD (and maybe HDD) has to be mounted
*Fan hole cut and fan mounted
*Painting the casing (still have no idea how I'm making it do shiny)
*IO shield mounting
*the bottom still has to be fabricated
One more change from my original plan, I am only running one fan. I know, this isn't a good idea to most people, but considering its only a Celeron and a low power graphics card, there shouldn't be any issues.
That's all for today! I'm looking at being 100% finished with this project by next weekend. Much quicker than I thought I would be!

Got what I hope are all the parts to build the case today.
I decided to save some money and just make a garbage can look like the Mac Pro. I was at Walmart and found this extremely fashionable zebra trash can. Outer diameter 7.5", Inner diameter around 7.25". Height, 11 inches.
To create the top fan spot I will cut a hole in it. For the curved "lip" on the top of the Pro I plan on using the foam disks. Two on top carved into the shape, sanded down, covered in Bondo, sanded once again, and painted and glued to the top of the can. The remaining disk will be cut to size and placed on the bottom with a spot for the bottom fan cut into it, then I will make the fins for the bottom to make it look more like a Mac Pro.
All in all pretty straightforward. The wood will be used to support the motherboard (grounding wire will lead from the standoffs to the power supply case just in case)
More updates soon. Thanks everyone
