Keep in mind coremark is made for 8bit micro controllers not desktop class cpu's so the scores are to put it lightly misformed

    Edit:

For example a arduino mega which runs at 16mhz gets a score of 7. This thing uses a over 10 years old cpu design and is 976times weaker than a snapdragon 820. To be at the same level of performance assuming perfect scaling it would need to run over 15ghz

The newer arduino wifi still run at 16mhz but is 6 years newer and has a score of 20 only being 341 times slower. So it would need to run at 5.45 ghz to be at the same level of a 820.

Both still are designed on pretty ancient designs.

Keep in mind that these are NOT at all made for performance just basic tasks they need to do and that is it.

Also keep in mind the 820 was not at all made to be a 8 bit micro controller. There are arm based ones specialized at this and they easily outscale the snapdragon whilst running slower.

The risc V seems to be special made for these instructions so of course it's gonna do a lot better as this is it's purpose but it really is in line with what you would expect a high power microcontroller to do when someone spends time developing one specifically for it.

Also keep in mind the default workload of the bench is 2000 bytes large so this could have easily taken place in it's cache memory thus again giving an unfair advantage against systems that first have to load it from somewhere else as this riscV seems to currently basically be built like like a microcontroller.

Either way tho if this can be translated to desktop 32 and 64 bit applications then it would be pretty epic but as it stands now it's a souped up microcontroller at best.

A new RISC-V CPU has been found to destroy Apple's new M1 chip in Performance Per Watt tests.

This is mainly attributable to the insanely low wattage of this new RISC-V CPU. At 3GHz it uses 69 milliwatts or 0.069 watts and at 4.25GHz this CPU uses 200 milliwatts or 0.2 watts.

As you might imagine running at higher frequency destroys the efficiency gains and the optimal frequency for this CPU is stated to be 3GHz.

This is pretty awesome and I hope we continue to get awesome new RISC-V based designs. RISC-V for those who don't know is an open source CPU architecture design as an alternative to ARM. Until now we've mainly seen low power chips but I also hope that we get to see higher performance desktop grade RISC-V chips in the future.

This goes across shit box laptops to iPhones to macbooks. No one is complaining their apps aren't snappy enough lol

Die sizes are a lot bigger so product per wafer is a lot lower, fab capacity cost is the same for both technically and if I were AMD I'd be wanting to make sure CPU stocks are as best as possible as that really is a more important market for them right now. Choice between 200,000 CPUs or 50,000 GPUs I'd go with 200,000 CPUs.

ignaloidas reacted to Master Disaster in EA gets a thorough ass whooping in the Dutch courts over lootboxes
This one really made me smile.

Yesterday the Dutch gambling commission (KSA) won a 12 month court case against EA over them selling lootboxes in Holland. And when I say lost I really mean LOST!!

It all started in early 2018 when the KSA ruled that lootboxes do in fact come under current Dutch gambling laws and as such should be subject to the same restrictions as other forms of gambling in the country. They gave publishers an ultimatum, change the way lootboxes work/stop selling them in Holland by June 2018 or face the consequences. EA disagreed and refused to do so (which makes no sense since they did pull them from sale in Belgium).
This is where the story gets interesting. The June 2018 KSA deadline came and went with no action from EA so the KSA made good on their promise, in October 2019 the KSA fined EA 10 million euros for breaking Dutch gambling laws. EA saw fit to challenge the decision in the Dutch court system forcing the KSA to suspend the fine and announcement of the judgement until the case was settled.
EA's argument was three fold. There's no official way to cash the prizes out, Fifa is a game of skill and not chance and that there's no scientific evidence linking lootboxes with gambling addiction. The courts disagreed on all 3 counts.

Unlike in other countries, Dutch law says that if a game of chance can be cashed out in any way, it doesn't have to be officially sanctioned, as long as the prize can be shown to have a real world market value, its gambling. Essentially EA created the game and by extension facilitated the creation of the market for the games prizes.

They said that players can choose to ignore the rest of Fifa and focus entirely on Ultimate Team which is 100% a game of chance.

Finally they said that evidence does exist and even if it didn't, that doesn't matter. Dutch law says that all games of chance will automatically be assumed to be harmful.
EA went on to argue that restricting lootboxes violates their rights to property and freedom of expression. Do I need to say any more? To quote Yong Yea "If I rob a bank then claim I was just expressing myself I still end up in jail". Obviously the courts saw right through this one.
Finally EA argued that disclosing the ruling and the fine to the public would damage their reputation. Yeah, no shit. You do a bad thing it damages your reputation. You know how to avoid that EA? Stop doing bad things.
EA was given 6 weeks to appeal. It took them less than 24 hours to say they intend to appeal
    https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2020-10-29-ea-fined-10m-over-loot-boxes-as-dutch-court-sides-with-gambling-authority

Slowly but surely its beginning to happen. Holland and Belgium have both ruled against EA under current laws. The UK are looking at amending laws to fit lootboxes in. The EU parliament is looking into it for a Europe wide decision and law makers in the US have been sniffing around.

It cannot come soon enough for me.

If it weren't for streaming, games like Among Us, Fortnite, PUBG, and pretty much any other game that has been a major phenomenon over the past few years would be unheard of. Game streaming is extremely lucrative for devs as its basically free advertising
