  1. I may be completely off my rocker, but it could be worthwhile to grab a capture card if you do YouTube. Takes some stress off your graphics card. Just a thought. Other than that, I think your build looks decent. Might want an SSD in there, as was said above by someone else already.
  2. Hi all! I'm studying information tech at a four year college, and I've been using a macbook up until now, but I realize I'll need a windows machine as well. I don't want or need another laptop, so I'm thinking of building a mini-ITX desktop (my gaming desktop is in storage currently). I might upgrade it in future for gaming purposes, but this will primarily be a coding and tinkering workstation, so I'll probably start with the integrated graphics on whatever chip I have (unless there aren't any) and pop a 1050 or 1050ti in there later. Some of you may recognize me from an earlier proposed ITX build, but this build is different because of its PURPOSE. I'm trying to get the best performance in intensive desktop tasks. So. Your thoughts? With B250 motherboard: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/z6cKwV https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jBsNtJ EDIT: I should mention that, though I don't want a laptop. form factor IS important. There isn't a lot of space in my tiny apartment, and I'd also like to use as little energy as possible without losing lots of performance.
  3. Some M.2 slots are NVME enabled, others are not. Some are just SATA III connections in an M.2 form factor. I'm not sure what you're trying to correct me on.
  4. The ultra m.2 is really just a PCI-E m.2, and the other m.2 is a SATA m.2. The Ultra M.2 supports NVME drives. Does that answer your question?
  5. I'd recommend a R5 1400 + GTX 1060 or RX 580 depending on which is cheaper. Unfortunately the site is a little too confusing for my boring American mind, but I think you should be able to fit in budget with those parts. Otherwise, I'd drop the processor to an R3 1200 and the GPU to a 1050ti, and that'll still kill 1080p with 8gb of RAM and a decent PSU. Check out droidbot's PSU tier list (put it in the search bar) to double check your PSU, but for parts like those, your PSU should be pretty much fine if it's over 400 watts, though you want to get the best possible. Hope this helps! Sorry I wasn't able to give you an exact list.
  6. If you can, I would go for another 8 gb of RAM. Either another 2x4, or you could just go for a 2x8 in the first place. Other than that, looks like a 1080p beast. You could even do some 1440p with this build, imo. Maybe not maxed settings, but definitely High.
  7. But can it run Crysis? Kidding. Build looks good. I agree with the more storage idea. Beyond that, there's literally nothing this build can't do. Except maybe server applications, but this isn't a server build.
  8. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't CAD work benefit from more cores? Would a Ryzen solution maybe work better here? In that price range, you could get a Ryzen 5 1600X for around the same price, and I've been told that the Ryzen processors make better use of more RAM. You'd also have 6 cores 12 threads instead of 4 cores 8 threads. Hope this helps!
  9. Looks good. I may swap the PSU for a modular one, to aid with cable management (I like my builds to look clean) but otherwise I like these choices.
  10. http://hdd.userbenchmark.com/Compare/WD-Blue-1TB-2015-vs-Seagate-FireCuda-SSHD-1TB-2016/3520vs3902 You're absolutely right. I should have done more research before speaking.
  11. The 1600 seems like overkill, don't you think? That video card won't be able to use that much CPU power...
  12. Looks good to me. I agree with going for the 1050ti, she'll get better gaming performance that way. Is she absolutely sure she can't build the system herself? Mini-ITX builds aren't particularly difficult in my experience, and there are loads of 1 hour or less youtube videos she could use to learn while she builds. I completely understand if she doesn't want the stress, but it really is easy to learn if knowledge is the barrier, particularly when she doesn't need to worry about connecting video card power, as in the case of the 1050ti you're looking at. She could use this video. There are also several by Austin Evans, two by LTT, and one from JayzTwoCents. Oh, why the Firecuda? A WD Blue costs exactly the same for a full TB instead of 500gb...
  13. I may be completely off my rocker, but don't H110 mobos need a BIOS update before they can use G4600s?
  14. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fFNcwV I'm planning this as a light gaming rig (for esports such as Overwatch, League, and Hearthstone) that I can take to LAN parties and transport relatively easily from my home in Virginia to school in Utah. I already have a Windows key from my main build (in my signature), and I've already got a monitor at both locations. I was debating between the 460 and the 1050, but I went with the 460 for the extra 2 gb of VRAM. I haven't been able to find a 560 in the graphics card price point I'm looking at ($120). Additionally, I wasn't sure which CPU to go with, so I could use some advice there. I'd like to keep the CPU under $100 if possible. Aaaand I'm also not sure about the PSU. Basically this entire build is up in the air, and comments and advice are appreciated. Thanks! PS: Yes, I do need wifi.
  15. Interesting question. I'm sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. If you'll be overclocking yourself, then I would recommend going for a 1600 instead of a 1500X, but if you can afford a 1600X I'd go for that one if you want to play at 1440p or 4k. However, that 1070 might have some issues if you want to play on ultra at 4k for some games. Most should be fairly OK on that rig, but really recent titles will start to drop frames. Is your monitor 60hz or a higher refresh rate? Unfortunately, coolers aren't really my thing. You'll need to ask someone else for a recommendation there, cause all I've got to recommend is Wraith Spire, but most overclockers (or quiet system people) scorn those. Maybe try the subforum?
  16. I absolutely agree. BUT add more RAM if at all possible, that'll help with VR.
  17. I think that would be a decent combo. The CPU is maybe a little bit of overkill, but not dramatically. If you're going to go with the 1070, you'll want probably a 1440p monitor if possible to take advantage of the power of that card.
  18. In that case you could downgrade to a 1600 or even a 1400 with little performance loss. The 1700 is certainly overkill for that graphics card. I would drop to a 1400 and upgrade to a 6 gb 1060 or an 8 gb 580 if gaming or graphic anything is important.
  19. Do you maybe want to switch out your USB wifi adapter for a PCI-E one? In my experience, those get better speeds. Unless you're going hardwired, in which case, why the adapter? EDIT: I now see that the board has wifi built in. Carry on haha.
  20. The CPU is kind of overkill (says the guy who has basically the same setup in his description). I would maybe swap for a core i5 or an R5 1400 and spend the extra cash on a better graphics card (a 6 gb GTX 1060, maybe even a 1070 if you find a good deal). You could also swap out for maybe an RX 580 if the cryptominers have finished with their insanity yet.
  21. Thanks for your reply! I'm about to give it a go... so it being windows instead of a linux OS won't affect it?
  22. Hi all! I have a Macbook Pro (Yeah, I left the PCMR for a little while) and I'm trying to get the SSD from my gaming setup (which already has windows installed on it) to run on the macbook. I have an external enclosure that's USB 3.0, and I'm running it through an adapter to my thunderbolt port. My question is, how do I work the software side of things? Is it possible? I've read a few threads on the topic, but I haven't found anything yet that actually makes it work. Any help is great! Thanks! PS: Yes, I am aware that running an OS from an external hard drive is not ideal. My max transfer speed is 5 gbps if I'm lucky.
  23. Forgive me if I misread, but are you really planning to pair a 7700K with only 1x8 gb of RAM? I would say the appropriate amount of RAM for that would be 2x8 at the least, preferably 2x16 or 4x8. For most modern tasks, eight gigs is enough, but this build isn’t an “enough” build with an i7. I’d say drop to an i5 and upgrade to more RAM, or pony up for more RAM to pair with the i7.
