AdvocateOfNyx reacted to Bjoolz in High Hot Spot Temps on Vega 56
The hotspot throttle temp looks to be 105°C. Can't find any sources for the hotspot max temp.

Sounds like it's gonna need to be disassembled.
Good news with that is that it's not nearly as hard as it sounds.
I would consider myself still a rookie (4 disassembly and reassembles done) and as long as you have the right size screw driver, a lint-free cloth, and some high % IPA and some thermal paste, it's just a matter of taking your time.
I also used a few q-tips for spot cleaning small spots but it sounds like you should be fine without.
The most intimidating part for me was the keeping track of where everything went, and for that I got a cookie sheet and some scotch tape to keep things in place and lay out where it all went.
Total time on first one was about 40 min (had a stuck screw that took some pursuasion and that ate up about 5 min all on its own)

Not replacing the thermal paste might damage your graphics card in the long run. You can use any paste that you have. Noctua/Arctic Mx-4/....etc. Noctua is fine.
Depends on the GPU of how it is to take apart. Like the radeon rx 580 is easy. The radeon 6000 series is complicated. I am on a radeon 6700 xt. I tried to dismantle it and could not. I was going to replace the paste. I spoke with others and they all suggested to leave it alone. That's what I am doing. I have seen videos on YouTube but i found it hard.

AdvocateOfNyx reacted to GuiltySpark_ in Moving Windows 11 to a New Drive
By definition to do a clean install you install a fresh copy of Windows on a fully wiped drive so no, you'd just have to reinstall programs. Obviously any important data you just backup beforehand on another storage medium (flash drive, external hard drive, etc..).
As for the built in cloning tool, like @Radium_Angel, i've never used it either but have used Macrium a number of time and it works.

AdvocateOfNyx reacted to Radium_Angel in Moving Windows 11 to a New Drive
The drive cloning software is just advertizing that it can move to drives of differing sizes, not that that is the only thing it can do. AS to using the built-in Windows cloning software I can't say, never used that before, but (EDIT, can't spell) I have used the Aomei one with no issues many times.

Macrium Reflect Free also works well.
Though this is the perfect time to do a fresh, clean install.

Numerous cloning software exists. This is one of them

I've used DG for other things, but not the cloning part.

AdvocateOfNyx got a reaction from DrMacintosh in Laptop for College
I am able to bring my desktop for sure, I just am not sure if I want to yet full time or not. I am a game pass subscriber so I do have access to some game streaming services if I really just want to hang out with my online friends and play some sea of thieves or something. I'll definitely consider that discount, thank you! I do have OneDrive, the website says "Students have 1TB of OneDrive space allocated to them, along with access to all of the Microsoft Office web applications."

AdvocateOfNyx reacted to poochyena in Linus complaining about game skins is ironic considering he used to be a house painter
Buying a cosmetic skin in a game for your character is no different than paying to have your house painted. You are paying real money for nothing more but to just change the cosmetics of your surroundings. The used paint is worth exactly as much money as a cosmetic skin, $0. Change my mind.

AdvocateOfNyx got a reaction from RockSolid1106 in See Views on Post While Post is Open
I know the title doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but I couldn't figure out how to explain it well in just a few words.
As far as I can tell, the only time you can see the number of views on a post before you click on it. However, sometimes it would be nice to not have to click the back button and scroll through all of the post listings to find the one you were just on to see the view count. Additionally, when looking at an old post, this can become difficult and time consuming to do. It also may be nice to see the number of comments on a post next to the view count. Since this information is already displayed on next to the post name before clicking on it, hopefully it wouldn't be too difficult to implement.
If I am blind and just missing it somewhere I apologize, but this is something that bothers me pretty much every time I ask a question or try to find an answer to a question on the forums. Thanks 🙂

That's a fair question. For me, I often post a question and then leave the tab open. If 100 people see it and nobody responds, I can assume that there probably is not an easy answer. If only 10 people see it though, I might want to ask it somewhere else and see if it generates more traffic or ask again/bump it in a week or two if the problem continues.
The same logic applies when looking for posts with a similar issue before posting my own. If I could see that 150 people saw someone's post about it a week or two ago and nobody had an answer, I would know that it isn't something I should expect to get a reply to quickly/at all. If I see 1000 views or something else very high, I could guess that many other people are having a similar issue, or it was brought up somewhere in tech media. Currently, when I search for a topic, I can see comment count only and not view count, even before clicking on it so I have absolutely no way of gaging that.
Sometimes this information is easily viewable in comments, but other times there are posts with a decent number of views and no comments. That's why I think view counts are useful to me personally, although I can't speak for anyone else.

AdvocateOfNyx reacted to Hewie in What happens if I reset bios with Windows 11 installed?
As far as im aware it should be fine unless you have bitlocker drive encryption.
If you do, just keep the backup key and it should be ok!
-
AdvocateOfNyx reacted to Helpful Tech Witch in What happens if I reset bios with Windows 11 installed?
unless bitlocker is on, nothing.
you can even install it without the tpm or secureboot (or even uefi) without issue with some regestry edits
edit:
unless you play valorant.
ive had to reset my cmos and valorant has not worked becasue it enforces those tpm/secureboot requirements

AdvocateOfNyx got a reaction from Tigerleon in Do I Need A DAC? (+ Suggestions)
I'm gonna go ahead and mark this topic as answered. I spent a lot of time looking through Amazon and have seen all but one of these options, ended up deciding on the E10K because my old headphones had a knob and I kept reaching for it the whole time I've had these only to realize it doesn't do anything anymore. Additionally, I really like the look and think I will be unable to notice a significant difference in DAC quality. Thank you for the suggestions 🙂

Alright, mad respect for being able to say you aren't sure! Thank you for the suggestion, if I had a bit more money I'd definitely look in to that one. Sadly I'm just trying to spend the gift card balance in my Amazon account; Christmas is expensive!
