I have great news. It looks like the stupidly overpriced and almost completely worthless Special Delivery Guarantee by 1pm for the letter I sent on Saturday actually wasn't completely worthless . I got an email from the Electoral Services people saying they got my letter and they're allowing it. The deadline is 5pm today and if I didn't choose Special Delivery it wouldn't have made it in time.
So the overpriced £6.60 postage actually made a difference.... that's kinda sad.

My birthday is in three days.
I'm having a sleepover with two friends and getting some free computers from the ex-husband of a coworker of my mom's (completely unrelated to my birthday, but it's happening on Saturday so I might as well mention it; he said in his emails with me and my mom that he has, among other things, a desktop, a Thinkpad of some kind, some other laptop, and an HP 48G (since it's the only thing I know the model of, I'm probably excited the most about this...but I'm also very interested in the laptops and desktop, especially if the desktop is X58 or newer...)).
I also might spend my birthday money on a new CPU and possibly a GPU depending on how much I get and used parts in my area.
Another unrelated thing, but the replacement screen for my phone still hasn't arrived. I'm kinda pissed because all the things I ordered on the SAME DAY that I don't need have arrived, but the one thing I actually need (yes, need; the digitizer on my current screen is broken so I have two massive "dead spots" on it. I'll attach a picture that shows what parts work and which ones don't) hasn't showed up yet.

I don't know about you guys but it just shocks and disgusts me how brutal teenagers are and can be nowadays. So there's a "gang fight" thing going on between two groups of teenage boys (14-16 years of age) from two towns in the Cantons of Aargau and Zurich, who are arguing about which town is better (Ikr), and it all kinda started out when those two rivaling groups met up at a shoping center and a big fight broke out ending in one 15 year old getting stabed in the right thigh, the knive just missed the main artery, he survied. But what I'm trying to say here is that little jokes and dicking around can get real serious real fast, and the shocking part is that those boys who are for example just at the age of 12-16 already mean it dead serious.
Be safe, the world can be real nasty.

NoxiousOdor reacted to CircleTech for a status update, "mixing and matching memory" of "your ultimate guide to computer memory" is completed
"mixing and matching memory" of "your ultimate guide to computer memory" is completed. I'll tease you guys with the second part of the section. This section covers what you can mix together (memory speed, timings, and brands), and what you can't mix together (memory generations, laptop and desktop memory*).
I noted at the bottom all these rules only apply to DESKTOP memory. I haven't even touched the more exotic memory technologies like ECC Registered Server memory, Fully-buffered DIMMs, LRDIMMs, and multi-rank DIMMs in the section. Doing so opens up an entirely new can of worms when it comes to memory technologies and I didn't want to include it in chapter one. This is really to prevent newbies from being scared away who are likely building a PC and just using plain old desktop memory.
For the people out there build a server or workstation however, you will have to READ through the entire second chapter and third chapter to fully understand what technologies can and cannot be mixed together. for example in some systems, ECC unregistered DIMMs can be mixed with unregistered non-ECC dimms but only on some motherboards. I'll have to get into this later.
Also here is the content I promised:

I don't know how many of you are 18 and US citizens yet, but the fidelity cash management account is a really incredible checking account. There's also a funky way you can effectively get a 1.8% yield on all your money in the account as of February 2019.
As far as I know, that account has no fees whatsoever.
No ACH transfer fees
No minimum balance fees
No overdraft fees
They also reimburse any third party ATM withdrawals, meaning you can shove your debit card into any ATM on the face of the earth and fidelity will pay the ATM fee for you.
ACH deposits into the account free up very quickly. I've seem same day transfers before between my accounts.
they offer both free checks and electronic bill pay to almost any credit card.
you can use your fidelity checking account to invest in their SPRXX money market fund which gives you a 2.05% yield as of February 2019. This way your checking account can earn a 2% yield without having to jump through hoops. Also because this is a money market FUND and not a money market ACCOUNT, you are not subject to regulation D like at a standard bank.
Money market funds are NOT FDIC insured, but they primarily invest in government and short term corporate debt. The most you will ever lose in one of these funds is 1% of your money in a great depression scenario.
You can also buy 4 week treasury bonds within your account to earn a 2.4% yield on your money.
If you have an account at a brick and mortar bank and they are charging you fees just to keep your account open, move your money now. there are so many financial institutions that provide free checking with no hoops to jump through.

It's interesting how much longevity platforms like X79 and X99 have had.
Just look at X58. That platform came out 10 years ago and people are STILL gaming on it!
Here's my point: If you want your gaming PC to last a very long time, choose the highest end SOCKET motherboard currently available with the most DIMM slots, then plan the rest of your rig around that.
Unlike every other part in your computer, motherboards will actually increase in price as they age while processors, RAM, video cards, and storage will decrease in price. This is why it's important to buy the highest end socket motherboard currently available then cheap out on everything else with the idea you will upgrade later. Also make sure your motherboard will support Server processors if it can AND ECC Registered server memory with x4 memory chips. This is VERY important if you want to take advantage of cheaper server hardware later.
TBH, this is the strategy I had originally planned with my X99 rig, until my needs changed. I no longer need a high end PC but if I did, I could still do this with X99.
Should I do a guide on "how to get your computer to last 10 years"? It would basically just be a short post diagramming why people should buy the highest socket motherboard they can today with plans to upgrade in the future. This system of "upgrading later" system has worked all the way back to LGA 775, and is something anyone can plan their build around.

So I just ordered a new monitor! Should be here by mid-February (it's still on pre-order in Poland despite being available in some other parts of the world already).
It should be a nice upgrade, it's a 144Hz FreeSync monitor with HDR but it's tested to work with Nvidia cards in terms of variable refresh rate technology so my 1080Ti should be a perfect match for it
