Xeon X5680 scores 3,896 points higher than the i7-920 on Passmark, at only $110 used ebay. The Xeon is only 935 points lower than the I7-4770 that sells for $250 used ebay. Whats the better deal? Furthermore, the passmark score for the Xeon is only at the baseclock.

Lots of the Xeons with the same name will differ greatly even with the same model number but the new revision... v1-v4 adding more cores every time or even changing sockets on the way. The best way is to search on Intel Ark and find what you need and then searching that model # exactly on your retailer website.

    Example. E5-2670 and the E5 2670 v3

You can see that by the third revision it is on the 2011v3 socket instead of 2011, and also is now a 12 core intead of the original 8 core and even the clock speed has changed.

Actually 1366 is about the longest lasting best performance platform in the history of computing because Intel didn't know yet how long the Xeons would last as upgrades once they were decommissioned out of servers and available for $80 second hand instead of $1700 new retail. Literally just swapping in an X5650 or an X5675 and making sure you have a decent cooler and OC it and then upgrading to the newest GPU that you can afford is all you need to do. No other platform can still give you excellent performance 6 years later the way 1366 has. That is why all Xeons are locked now and can't be OC'ed.

You know that bidding on an item via eBay counts as a binding contract to purchase it, right?

NEVER bid on multiple items unless you intend on buying them all. If you win both, the seller (either seller) does not have to refund you, if you decide you don't want them both.

Hopefully someone will outbid you on one of the items, or you can put both to use.

you know, it doesn't automatically charge you when you win a bidding war. You pick whether you want to pay or not. That's why most auctioneers say that they "won't ship until you confirm payment." If you win and you didn't want to pay, you could just not pay and the seller will have to re-list it. It's a dick move, sure, but you're not signing any contracts. You won't be sued, but you might get a negative review.

Being from Texas doesn't make "coke" mean anything but "Coke".. Sorry..

That's like me saying "I'm from Vancouver, pot is short for potato chip".

Communication is a two-way street, and if the communicator uses terminology that will confuse the majority of the audience then he or she has effectively increased the effort involved in the interaction for the other side. To do so unintentionally is understandable, but to insist on it once the source of the communication breakdown has been identified is obstinate and rude.

TLDR - being confusing is a great way to be ignored and dismissed by those around you.

As a professional communicator it's something I live by and something I wish more people would be aware of.

I would argue that the difference between Coke = Pop and Kleenex = Tissue would be this:
You ask for a Kleenex, but what you actually wanted was a moist butt wipe.

Now of course, Comparing Coke = Cola to Kleenex = Tissue is perfectly valid, and a great way to display how (if you are going to use brand names as a generic word) it should be done.

QFT, games and programs are increasingly using more cores. The X56xx CPUs will still be capable after 4 and 6 core become the minimum requirement.

When Denis broke Linus' house trying to build a tech room. The feud between Denis and everybody else which seems to be 'not right' and could potentially be taken to a harrassment level of criminal charge. But I dont know what goes on behind the camera. It could be a sweet little lawsuit for Denis to rake in money. But I dont know what the end game is for that man. I have an idea of what it is.

im talking about gaming performance, those cpus you guys are talking about overclocked to its max barely has faster single core speed than a fx series cpu. i've done the oveclocks and the benches. yes a x5680 scores great in multithread benches but in gaming they suck and get thier ass kicked by a locked i5. they will bottleneck modern gpus, the 4770 wont. since you are using passmark as a reference compare the single core passmarks all those old 1366 cpus are too slow. the 4770 will smoke any of those cpus in pretty much every program. x5680 will render video faster...yay

in passmark single core speed the 940 at 4.0 ghz (which is a high oc for that chip) it only scored 1700's, x5650 was the same at 4.0 ghz. the fx 8350 at 4.8 ghz scored in the 1700's also and people here claim that cpu sucks!   the i5 2400 with a overclock to 4 ghz scored over 2100. a locked 3770 oc'd to 4.3ghz scores over 2400.

there is no reason to go into x58 anymore, its old, slow, expensive and outdated. but yay you get a good bench in cinebench multithread.

the 920 at its max is slow and bottlenecks gpus like a 280x, the x56xx series can be okay but what no one is mentioning is a x58 that not only supports the 6 core xeons but can actually get a good overclock with them costs around $200, over half the x58 motherboards wont even post with a stock x5650.theres a few will will push one but not much more than stock and those cpus suck unless you have them 4ghz+..... you might get lucky and get something like a sabertooth x58 for $150 bucks. that money is not worth that sub par performance. the 4770 with a POS $20 motherboard will give you much better performance overall. but its your choice. NEVER go by any of those cpu compare websites they are misleading.

Yes, which is why many gaming laptops either pack the high end and have some heft, or go for thin & light by going a bit conservative with the component selection.
ASUS wants the best of both worlds, and will get neither.
