I'm looking to build a server that I'll use to host websites (not high amounts of processing or load). I want to also run 4 to 5 VM's in parallel on the same machine for various development projects. Do you have any recommendations for good CPU/Motherboard/Ram combinations? I was looking at either a Core i7-6700K or i7-7700K processor to start. Any suggestions much appreciated! Brad

I'm wondering what CPU / GPU you'd recommend for a build that'll be used (at least in part) for running VM's on VirtualBox (2 to 3 max parallel and not gaming). I'm looking at $500 - $600 for the build. Don't care if it's AMD or Intel.

So if more cores is what I need what about the AMD FX-8350?

Yeah maybe I'm getting my terminology wrong, I'm not planning on a dual boot, maybe emulations? I thought it would be best to use something like VirtualBox to configure a Linux enviro to play around with and also maybe some older versions of Windows for tech support.

I'm really trying to stick to budget on this but could go less HHD for more CPU I guess. What do you think about the i5-6500 3.2GH for this build?

I've been looking at a budget $500 (before case, PS) option for an intel (rather than AMD-FX which i was originally considering). I currently only have a laptop and want a desktop at home with a bigger (single) monitor. I'm looking at running window 10 (not sure about home vs pro). I'll also need keyboard/mouse (recommendations?) it will be my personal PC for day to day use but i'm also planning on running a few (4 to 6) VM's of different environments for some tech support/dev work as well as a linux vm to learn that OS. I'll also do some gaming but that is least of my priorities, just a nice to have. I want to setup a mail server (maybe) and do some other things like that. i've gone with the i3 because of budget and also 16 fb RAM rather than 32 (but have used 8gb chips in case i find 16gb isn't enough and need to go to 32). Ive also gone with a mobo that has RAID support with mult SATA 6gb in case i want to expand my storage solution. Also wanted M.2 for possible SSD expansion. I've assumed i don't need a GPU because of the i3 chip i'm using. Here is the build i've come up with, would love your input. Really trying to save money on this. i'm in the USA if that helps. I've been looking at AMD because of cost but have seen a lot of resistance to the FX architecture because it's old and take a lot of power? So i was just browsing the intel side of things. It looks like i can actually save money by going the intel route since it has inbuilt video and so i won't have to spend money on a GPU (is this a safe assumption?). My concern is half the cores (4 instead of 8) of i go intel i5 rather than AMD Fx. Thoughts on this?

i'm not prioritizing gaming and need the cores/cpu for running vms if that helps or do you have any recommended changes?

I'm planning a new build that will be an AMD FX-8350 chip with an ASUS 970 PRO GAMING/AURA mobo, 32 GB Skill Ripjaws x Series 1600 DDR3 ram (4x8GB). Plextor M8Pe 25gGB M.2 SSD and a Seagate 4 TB SATA 6 HDD. It'll probably have a PNY GeForce GT 730 DirectX 12GDDR5 GPU. This is a "mid range" budget PC. I'd like some room for drive expansion so happy to have extra bays for the future. With this config what Power Supply do you recommend with what case?

I'm considering this GPU on a mid budget build for a home server that I'll do some virtualization on and also some gaming on (not with the VM's I don't think). Maybe I'll upgrade some day but gaming isn't the priority now. Any thoughts? i meant specific RAM recommendations given the mobo i've selected, i.e. is there any value in going with faster RAM? Either way do you have any specific recommendations for RAM i should get?
