  1. Thanks for the help. I'll do that. I'm currently trying to remove the write protection in reg, we will see how this goes. I figure, if this drive is done, can't hurt it too much more lol. I'm on a Windows OS that I don't care much about so not too worried if I mess it up too bad.
  2. Side note, I did try to remove write protection using diskpart in cmd prompt. Can't remove it because I lack the proper permissions.
  3. I woke up a few days ago after mistakenly leaving my pc on over night. The pc had, I assume, tried to do a Windows update and got hung. When I got to it, the screen was black and pc was unresponsive. After tring to get the system to respond, I went ahead and turned it off and back on understanding that this could mess up the os. However, when I went into the bios after, it was no longer recognized as a bookable device, so I couldn't do a system repair, restore, or any use of the other Windows tools to repair the disk. All that to say, when I tried to move, edit, or anything else to the files on that drive, an error pops up saying the drive is write protected and I can't take ownership of the files due to this so I can't move and edit them. I've tried several avenues to take ownership of the file in the security settings and in the CMF takeown cmd. Running out of ideas and wanting to know if you all have and advice. The only thing I really want off the drive is the Minecraft world my daughter and I play on. So any help is appreciated. TLDR: OS got corrupted, can't access the folder the holds my daughter and I Minecraft world to move it to a new OS due to ownership and write protection issues.
  4. That really isn't too bad, probably about double current prices. I halfway figured it would be like when SSDs started hitting the market. But I guess that was different than an upgrade to an existing product.
  5. Hey, yea you're right about feeling left out lol. Been there with computer upgrades before. In my experience, when new architecture comes out, it's either prohibitively expensive or kinda buggy. So I think I'm willing to take the risk, thanks again for the input!
  6. Thanks for the advice guys. The reason I upgraded gpus is I went to 1440p and my 980 just can't do it well. Plus more and more games are requiring more than 4gig vram. I'm currently leaning towards the upgrade now. It's a gamble either way but the 5800x should last me a while. Thanks again!
  7. Budget (including currency): $2400 Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Games, a little bit of everything, not streaming/video editing or mining. Other details Gaming at 1440p So I got lucky with Best Buy a couple of days ago and nabbed a LHR 3080. I'm currently running my old 6800k and am wondering, do I upgrade now and grab a 5800x or do I wait to see Intel's offering at the end of the year and upgrade then. Just looking for opinions as I've not been following the tech space very closely this year. I usually keep my computer about 5 or 6 years if not more. Thanks in advance!
  8. The hospital began training doctors and nurses how to don and dof tyvek suits since we have a bunch left over from Ebola. Couldn't help but get a picture of my 10mil subscriber shirt from Lttstore.com
  9. Oh cool I'll check that out too!
  10. Cool, I'll do that! Thanks for the link!
  11. Hey, I've thought about that too. I've looked at 6950x on eBay. Unfortunately the best prices I come across feel sketchy or go for $400-600 used. For that I could grab a couple semi decent cpus and mobos. Thanks though!
  12. Hey, yea I've looked at unraid because I've seen LTT use it and that's all I'm really familiar with. I've also watched a couple of their videos using it and it doesn't seem to bad. I've also considered selling it. I guess I'm a little sentimental as I'm still using my i5 750 on a p55 board from a literal decade ago in my htpc lol.
  13. Hey guys! So, the wife has okayed a new pc. My kids are getting old enough to use their own and instead of building 2 new pcs for them, I want to take my old one and set up a few virtual machines (two for them and potentially a nas/host). Current build: 6800k (6 core 12 thread) Asus Strix x99 32GB Ram Corsair Dominator 3000mHz Gigabyte GTX 980 Windforce x2 I'll need some more storage and a UPS but that should be it? The kids won't do a whole lot in the machines aside from playing the occasional minecraft and homework. Also, I haven't messed around with virtualized machines at all and I only have a vague idea how it should go down. Is this a feasible idea? Which software is steady enough for kids to muck around on while being new user friendly? Are there any tips you would like to impart on a newb? Do I need to enable virtualization in the bios? Or should I just build them 2 newer cheap computers? Thanks very much as I have no idea what I'm doing!
  14. Our family's first computer was a Windows 3.1 machine. We had all kinds of fun on that machine. One thing I remember was a Jurassic Park game. My very first addition to a computer was adding a CD-Rom to it. It came with Return to Zork i think. Knowing my mother, I'm sure she's got it stashed away somewhere. Next time I take that 7 hour drive, I'll post some pics.
  15. Just for completeness sake, ASUS sent me a new board today. All in all the turn around in the repair was like 6 days including shipping back and forth and a weekend. All in all, I'm very pleased with Asus's RMA process. Quick turn around is nice, good communication. Would RMA again.
  16. If it were me, I think I would rather just buy a tv with that kind of money if I'm just going to be watching movies. Just my thoughts tho. I bought this tv and it's honestly really really good for the price. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MTGM5I9/ref=sxts_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1539695183&sr=1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65
  17. This is the picture of the end that popped and smoked. It's hard to see but there is a little exposed wiring and the wire to the capacitor was melted to the heat shrunk wrapping. Neo-revo the cables from that EVGA psu have marked where they go on the plastic connector. ie CPU, motherboard, SATA, etc. Thanks for the help guys, ASUS is going to rma the board.
  18. Yea, that's a good idea. I'll take down the insulation and look and update tonight after work. Update with pics.
  19. Argh damn you auto correct!! Never should have added that word to the library Anyways, replace it with post* Nah nothing melted. This psu came with 2 8 pin cables that are 4+4 because, as you probably know, there is a 4 pin and an 8 pin connector on the top of the mobo. I also tried the 550watt psu with the 4 pin connector in and the 8 pin cable previously, but I thought that the unit could post author that 4 pin connected. I'll probably try again when I get home from work, just to soothe my sanity.
  20. My PC Asus Strix x99 GAMINGGGGGG I7-6800k 32GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 3000mix Gigabyte GTX 980 Windforce x2 in SLI EVGA G2 1000w PSU Samsung 970 Pro M.2 500gig 4TB Western Digital Red NZXT Kraken 62 So here is the story. Lately, my pc had been running a little hot. I had not cleaned it out in about 6 months and I figured I would take this opportunity to reapply thermal paste. So I took everything apart and reassembled it. Turned it on and it wasn't posting. I figured it was just taking a minute since I moved everything around. The power was on, fans were spinning, just no pussy. This system had been finicky since I built it. Then it just shut off. I did everything I knew to diagnose it. Went down to 1 ram sick, changed those all around, reseated the CPU and heat sink, cleared cmos, took out the ssd and hdd, took a GPU and power supply I knew was working and hooked it up to the motherboard. No fan spin, no nothing. Just a little red led labled pwr at the bottom of the board flashing. Even with the new power supply. Granted, it was a 550 watt, but that should be enough to post a 6800k and a gtx 1050ti. Hope was waneing and I decided to give it one last try with 1 sick ram, gtx1050ti, fan plugged into the CPU slot with the kraken mounted. Took the 550watt psu, hooked the 24pin connector and the 8 pin above the north bridge and left the 4 pin off for now. I had left the 4pin cable plugged into the psu and just kinda hanging out on the table next to the case. Flicked the power to the psu on and nothing happened, initially. Just the flashing red led. About 10 seconds after I clicked the power on I heard a sizzle coming from the disconnected 4+4 cable at the point where they split followed by a pop and a puff of smoke. I immediately shut power to the psu off. So I figure, the 4+4 pin cable sorted out potentially sending a lot of excess wattage to the CPU and potentially frying my board. Working on an sending an rma to see what I can do. In the mean time, I'll probably pick up a 2200g and a b350 board and cry over my lost hardware ? and nearly $1000 ?
  21. Hey folks, Just had a quick question. I'm in the market for a 1440p ultrawide. I plan on doing some gaming but mostly going to be used for photo editing and things of that nature. So I'm trying to strike a balance between the 2. You guys have any recommendations. Preferably less than $750. Thanks guys.
  22. Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I had a moment of, "oh shit, it would be cool to have a 6950x" without much thought if anything else. However, the processor I have is more than sufficient for my daily uses, so I won't be buying this CPU. Thanks for the great advice, as always.
  23. Hey guys, I was perusing the Amazon when a came across this. Intel CM8067102055800 CORE I7-6950X PROCESSOR EXTREME EDITION 3.50G 25M CACHE https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GIO0QNC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_cvIuBbTY0HWQ8 Now, I don't know what to think of this. It's listed as "new" and more than half the price of other 6950x's. It's also missing most of the specs. I'm petty sure it's a scam but was wondering what you guys think.
  24. Hahaha noted. Cool, I looked at the CM600 and if I can get it for good price, I'll probably buy that one over the Arris Modems. Thanks for the input!
  25. Cool, Thanks for the input! I'm pretty well sold on that router. I think Arris bought some part of Motorola at some point, but they appear to be the same machine re-branded as Arris devices. Even my old Motorola SGB6580 had it's firmware updated to it's Arris version about a year ago.
