  1. How much ram do you have, and how much of it is used during games that make you lag?
  2. Thats pretty funny, I was going to post about the same thing. How long do your freezes last? A few seconds? I have the exact same problem with a kingston A400 240 gb with firmware up to date.
  3. Hello Linus Tech Tips, I was wondering if you could help me diagnose a hardware problem on my laptop. I run Ubuntu 18.04 on a Asus SC56 laptop. I was just doing some web browsing when my laptop completely froze after a few minutes. It happened two or three time after hard reboots. The third time, when I rebooted, the computer turned on (fans whirring and lights on), but the screen stayed completely off. I tried plugging a second monitor and nothing showed up on it. I tried the keyboard shortcuts for dimmness and secondary monitor display mode to no avail. Any ideas? I happen to have a second laptop which is identical appart from a broken screen, so I can swap some things around, even though its tougher on laptops. Thanks in advance!
  4. It allows you to transfer data over your home power lines. You plug one adapter in a wall socket near your router and the other one near your computer. You connect the first one to your router with an ethernet cable and the second one to your computer with another cable. Picture
  5. I wouldn't count on WIFI for gaming, especially if you play competitive video games. I'd suggest a powerline adapter. I switiched over from WIFI and it was great. Not a single spike since.
  6. Hold it! I'm from QC and I've had both Teksavvy and Bell. Get. Teksavvy. (or Electronic Box if it matches your usage profile better) First off, even though it's a reseller, it's prices are very competitive. This is due to a law in Quebec forcing Videotron and Bell to resell their internet cheaply to resellers to encourage competition and ward off monopolies. (I really hope you get a similar law, southern neighbors). Their packages are very interesting to me, especially the "you do not have a transfer limit between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m." clause. In answer to VItaminMmm: "Downside is you have to buy your own equipment. vs Bell should be able to provide a free ones." True, you do have to buy equipment, but bell equipment does not come free, you often pay 5$ monthly rental fees. "Activation Fee. vs Usually no activation fee" There is indeed an activation fee, around the 70$. "Higher wait time for installation vs Well which ever provider is hooking you up, they will put you in the bottom pile" Got my teksavvy installed in under a week. "Higher wait time for service calls vs same as above Chargeable services calls vs same as above "Poorer" customer support* - not sure if entirely true, but makes sense on some aspects as they are really just a reseller" Completely false, they have the best customer support I've ever dealt with. They do not outsource their support to India and were always very friendly and helpful every time I call. The wait times are also bellow average, and their machine specifies times where the call traffic is at a minimum if you really don't want to wait. "Cable can get node congestion especially in rural areas that are not upgraded or w/o is not fiber fed while DSL will not have that issue." DSL in my neighborhood is shit. NEVER had any congestion with their cable service always getting max speeds and great ping. I live in Sherbrooke, which is rural enough. I don't know about their DSL, but I've heard good things. All resellers were forced to up their prices recently because they were getting too big a chunk of the traffic and the market, I still believe their prices are interesting. Yes, you must buy equipment and installation, but you'll have a smaller monthly fee and a way better service. EDIT: You may rent the modem or pay every month until you pay it off. Read into it, I don't know the exact offer.
  7. I am going to get a CX500 500w PSU. Will it handle my build? Will I have some wriggle room for OCing?
  8. Hey Sorry for all your help and especially for taking so long to reply: I moved right after starting this post and only now have I found time to adress my problem. Most of you were right, it was the PSU. It's fan is dead. Do you have any budget powersupplies to recommend to go with my build? I added a Hyper 212 Evo to it. Thank you! EDIT: My PSU is old.. Coolermaster RP-500-PCAR, would it be worth just changing the fan? I did it on my fathers power supply a month ago and it worked like a charm.
  9. Thank you everyone, I'll try logging my temps and I'll come back to you afterwards.
  10. Hello, I just upgraded my computer, here are my specs: -FX-8320 (still on a stock cooler and stock clocks) -GTX 660 -GA-990FXA-UD3 -G.Skill Ripjaws X series 8gb DDR3-2133 The crashes happen after a while when I'm playing hardware intensive games like Battlefield 3. My screen and peripherals shut down but the computer stays on and the fans keep on spinning. Any guesses? The CPU running hot maybe? Would a Memtest be appropriate? Thank you!
  11. Hello, I'm looking for an ATX windowed case for about 75$ CAD. Any recommendations? PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory Storage: Samsung 840 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card (Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-12-26 14:01 EST-0500) EDIT: 75 CAD
  12. But will I be able to OC with the Hyper 212 EVO?
  13. Hey guys, Just updated my rig with a 8320 and I'm pretty satisfied, but as we all know, the stock cooler just sucks. With a budget of roughly 50$ which cooler would you recommend? I'd eventually like to OC a little, so I'd enjoy one letting me do that. Is it worth looking into liquid cooling in that price range? Up until now, I've mostly seen the Hyper 212 EVO recommended. Also, when my computer runs full load while gaming for an extended period of time, it has a tendency of crashing. Having only one screen, I haven't had a chance to monitor temps yet, but is it an educated guess to suspect my CPU being the culprit? My GPU is a gtx 660 and I've had it for a while in another build and it never caused me any problems. Here is my current build: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory Storage: Samsung 840 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card
  14. You guys were a bunch of help, I'll see if I can get a good price for an FX-8320 this friday. Thank you everyone!
  15. But apart for the amount of cores, is there a big difference between the two? Is each core's architecture the same? Also, is the FX-8350 and overclocked FX-8120 juste like the 6350 to the 6300? Thank you!
