PhaseShift reacted to TetraSky in Why crack a game or software?
To prove you can to it?
"They said it was uncrackable, but I managed to do it! I'm incredible, worship me!"
Also because some people just want to help others.

Some people would like their softwares to work without a disc, without having to be always online, without requiring steam, not have the performance of said game to be trashed due to an invasive DRM, etc... If steam goes belly flop tomorrow, who would it affect? Not those who cracked their games that's for sure.
It's to remove the BS "protection" that publishers put on their games, which has shown to not really increase sales. If you make a good game, it will sell regardless of DRM (See Witcher 3).

But really, in the past it was mostly to get rid of the "insert disc to play" bullcrap, which I was totally on board for and quite often partook in it with my legitimate games.
These days, in this era of always online "Games as a Service", cracks for games will be a necessity, for when publishers decide to pull the plug on our games, making them unplayable due to the servers being offline or for people who live in areas where the connection to said server is iffy at best.

With the small budget and the high prices for RAM an Gpus I would say: buy a prebuild. (or used, but you'll need a bit more knowledge before risking you money with that)

If the only use for the PC would be gaming a console would be a good option as well.

PhaseShift got a reaction from mrchow19910319 in i5-8600k vs i7-8700
Just to add a different opinion - the 8700 is a much better buy than the 8600k IMO because of the extra threads. You might not use them now but if you plan on keeping your cpu for a long time they might come in handy. If you look at the situation now - people who bought i7s 5 years ago are much better off than people who bought i5s(even if those i5s are oc'ed).

PhaseShift got a reaction from johnukguy in Which CPU will last longer time(years) in gaming - R5 1600 or i5 8400
IMO the r5 1600 will last longer because of the 12 threads. It seems like games built on modern apis are really taking advantage of more threads and that trend is going to continue. Sure 6 cores are great right now but in 3-4 years, who knows... 3-4 years ago 4 core cpus were great and nobody expected games will ever take advantage of so many cores.

Because most systems that still use win7/XP have a real reason. Think of programs and machines at just hospitals. They would need to all be replaced/updated, a seriously large undertaking. Another example could be CNC mill programs. Switching over is an incredibly difficult endeavour, and there wouldn't be any benefits.
TL;DR; if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

PhaseShift reacted to Morgan MLGman in Will an i5 6600k bottleneck a 1080ti?
Yup, I'm 100% sure. My friend has an i5-4690K @4,6GHz which translates into performance of an i5-6600K clocked at around 4,1-4,2GHz and his CPU is a huge bottleneck in Battlefield 1 at 1080p. He's got a GTX 1060 6GB to pair the CPU with, and even though it isn't a particularly powerful card, he still notices drops of GPU usage even into mid 50s. That of course results in FPS drops, bad frametimes and stuttering because his CPU is pegged at 100% across all four cores.

Obviously there are games where the bottleneck won't be noticeable or as severe, but new games tend to be heavier on the CPU than they used to and for those games, quad-cores with no HT are not enough to pair them with a high-end GPU like a 1080Ti. If that CPU can't actually get all the performance out of a GTX 1080, it definitely won't be able to support a 1080Ti well-enough for a premium gaming experience that you paid for when you bought a GPU like that.

My vote goes to upgrading the CPU as well if OP wants to have a 1080Ti.

The below is 1080p very high. Whereas the article talks about merely high settings...

So you obviously don't need to a vega56 for 1080p.

What this game does benefit from on the CPU side is lots of threads as shown below. So i5 users may struggle.

Whether the above requirement of lots of threads is due to genuine game logic, or because it allows the DRM process to be run without taking CPU time from game logic I don't know.

Well it seems ubisoft totally lost it, 2 DRM is worse enough in itself but to call on one of them non-stop is just insane. Im afraid if this is not stopped in its tracks it will "infect" other studios as well... They always complain about piracy but for some reason only the paying customer gets screwed , meanwhile pirates have a better experience because the resource hog DRM is stripped out from their game. Ubisoft tries to grasp harder but in the end they will loose even more because of that...

PhaseShift reacted to HKZeroFive in Is Pascal as Far as Ryzen Can Go?
Destiny 2 is one of those games that thrives on single-threaded performance despite people saying it'll utilise so-and-so amount of threads (and once again proving that utilisation of more threads doesn't mean more performance).

It's one game. You can't make a blanket statement and say "oh, since Ryzen doesn't perform well in this game with my GTX 1070, does this mean that Ryzen can't handle Pascal in general?!". The answer is no. In many other games, R5 1600 can handle a GTX 1070 fine.

Besides, it's been well-documented that for 1080p 144Hz gaming, Intel's processors are usually a better choice. At 1080p, you're eventually going to hit a CPU bottleneck if the GPU is powerful enough.

PhaseShift reacted to ZestyJalapeno in Are loot boxes a form of unregulated gambling?
Does this belong to general discussion? Let's just say it does.

Today I came across a video from one of my fave YouTubers (check him out - all credit to this video goes to him)

Let's think of loot crates in an analogy; Kinder Eggs. Everyone knows what a kinder egg is, a milk chocolate egg with a toy in it, there is an element of mystery with trying to go for a different toy. Does this count as gambling? No. The purpose of a Kinder is to give you a sugary snack, a toy, and a way to smuggle stuff for those of you who watch too much Narcos. Anyway, when you buy a kinder egg you will always always get a toy and some choccy. It's advertised as such and therefore there is no inherent element of risk. Hence not gambling.

Now, what if Kinder then starts selling mandatory crates of Kinder Eggs that may contain actual kinder eggs and/or useless inedible rocks wrapped in foil with a totally random distribution of the two items in any given crate? There would be no way of getting Kinder Eggs other than through these crates and the chances of getting a full crate of Kinder Eggs and a full crate of stones are statistically equal. That by definition is gambling.

Let me introduce you to the loot crate, part of the sweeping, all-consuming cancer known as microtransactions that is currently pervading the gaming industry. The first time I've ever come across loot crates was in Mass Effect 3, published by...ahem...Electronic Arts. In the online mode, there would no guaranteed mercantile way of getting a certain weapon, upgrade or perk by purchase, the only way to get a certain rifle of a given power level was to buy a loot crate of the corresponding power level and hope to RNG you got one. It might take an hour, a week or even months worth of play to get it, one thing was for certain though, is that you would have to spend credits. Here comes the malicious part, these credits could either by grinded in game...or bought with real money through the online shop.

Therein lies the problem, if I could buy crates with real money ( I never did) and hope that by chance I would obtain an item...it's gambling. 100% through and through. A virtual slot machine with improved odds is still a slot machine.

Let's flash forward to 2017. AAAA titles like FIFA, COD, NBA2k etc etc are selling loot crates (packs or whatever name they go by) by the hundreds of millions worth of $$$, a lot of them to minors. Where are the gamblingaware warnings? Where are the outreach programs that teaches to young people and children about the dangers of risking away real money? The government would spring to action if I opened a child casino outside of a school where I would offer AND encourage risky, chance based purchases to pocket-money toting kids, but instead they're allowed to go online, spend money on any and all platforms from iOS to Steam on these fucking loot crates.

F2P games, sure, they need to make money through microtransactions and that's their whole business model, it's a whole another kettle of fish. None of those AAA titles are F2P, far from it. Anyway, this shouldn't be allowed to go on. The video creator above said he contacted gamblingaware UK about the problem and they haven't got back to him.

Im sure all of you have seen the linus tech tips youtube channel, and they made pretty good content until recently.

And this video has a lot of flaws and is one of my main parts in my opinion why the channel is getting worse.
Now let me address some of the things i think  are wrong with this video
    1. at 5:07 Linus says "If everyone else is doing it, it means it works" There is alot of things wrong with that statement 1. If you want your content to be well, better than others. You have to work for it, There is no shortcut to success. if you disagree with me, Show me 1 video that is genuinely a well made thought out video.
    2. The last parts of the video is Linus basically explaining to the viewers that "We need more money, we should get away with click bait"
And if you base yourself as a business you should act more like a business.

Next thing is the decline in my interest in the tech quickie videos
I used to love them, But now there poorly researched and very unprofessional

    here is a few examples
    New
    1. Self promotion at the beginning
    2. The videos have just lost the professionally in my opinion

    Now an older one
Notice how theirs no self promotion at the beginning
And how more professional it looks and feels with the information and how its delivered.

    This is just my opinion
Im hoping the channel will change and become like it used to be.

PhaseShift reacted to Jon Jon in Core i3 Coffee Lake or Ryzen 3 1200?
People are pushing Coffee Lake to you, but not really telling you that the 8700K will be the best CPU you'll ever get on the platform.

If you plan to upgrade later, then assume that 8700K performance is the best you'll ever get.

I am curious as if Intel will change this business model, but I wouldn't count on it.

I am curious to see how Zen+ will be, as supposedly AMD's primary focus is to fix the IMC issues along with clockspeed limitations.

You need to remember that the 8700K is beating Ryzen 7 with a 1GHZ clock speed gap. Zen+ CPUs will more than likely close, if not, beat that gap.

Then of course, you need to factor in the 16 PCI-E lane limitation. I don't know what kind of editing you plan to do, how you plan to capture footage, what footage you'll be using (are you doing game related streaming/recording, are you capturing from a camera and doing editing there? These are big questions to answer for yourself).

On AM4, we will get Zen+ and Zen 2, so I would suggest getting a Ryzen 3 and a budget ASRock or ASUS B350 motherboard.

At least you can run a Ryzen 7 on them stock without worrying about VRMs on their B350 boards.

Sorry for the wall of text, but by the time you plan to upgrade, AMD may have CPUs better than the 8700K, supported on the sub $100 motherboard that you buy TODAY.

EDIT: Also, good choice on the Geforce GTX 1050ti. It's a solid card for gaming, the CUDA cores will give you extra oomph in your editing tasks (assuming that you will use the Adobe suite, or most other mainstream / professional class editing software).
  20. Agree
PhaseShift reacted to mariushm in i5 8400 vs ryzen 5 1600
Go with AM4 and Ryzen 5
You also get a cooler with the cpu which is good enough for stock speeds and even some small overclocking and if you want to push it all the way to 3.9..4 ghz and you're not happy with the stock cooler performance, you can always buy later a better cooler.
The motherboards are also cheaper, around 75$ for basic b350 chipset motherboards, around 90-100$ for boards that are very good for overclocking. Boards for 8400 start now from around 120$ and they're way basic-er compared to amd boards (few usb ports, no m.2 , very light).
You can take the money and put it towards better video card.

As for streaming, if you have a modern video card like RX series or GTX 1060 and higher, you can use the hardware encoders on the video cards to encode and stream, so your processor won't be used for encoding (except for encoding the audio, which won't use a lot of processor time).
OBS and XSplit both know to encode using you video card or your processor, it's up to you how you want to stream.

You can encode with your processor and it will give you better quality compared to encoding with your video card but for some games it doesn't matter much. You'd also want to encode with your processor if you have really low internet speeds, for example if you have to stream using only 2-3 mbps for that 720p stream - encoding with your processor will help retain more quality in that low amount of bitrate, hardware encoders in video cards need more bits to encode content but they do it fast and without using the processor.

No, Ryzen 1400 or 1500X performs better than i5 7400 or 7500. Not to mention that you can go and OC it to get even more performance (also supports way faster RAM).
Ryzen 1400 and 1500X are sitting closer to locked i7 performance.

PhaseShift reacted to HKZeroFive in BOTTLENECK?
Perhaps there's a reason why everyone is recommending the R5 1600 instead. Haven't you thought about that?

The thing is, you're shelling out $200+ for a processor that only has four cores and four threads. Your 0.1% and 1% minimums will significantly worse than the R5 1600, meaning that your frametimes are going to be inconsistent... which in turn means your gameplay won't be smooth. It's a completely different story in comparison to the i7-7700K.

With the existence of the R5 1600 and inevitable arrival of Intel's own Coffee Lake, buying the i5-7600K is simply a bad decision. Full stop.

6 cores isn't enough for proper multi-tasking though, and they've offered 6 cores for years. Gaming chip is pretty relative, it'll be faster than Ryzen for 144hz sure, but at 60hz there's no real difference and Ryzen still saves a good amount of money for the same 6 core/12 thread CPU option.
