  1. Looking at what Puget Systems suggests my budget is WAY LOW. I guess I'm looking at $3000?????
  2. Being a Mac guy (helping out a friend) and venturing into the water of Windows machines I am leery of buying a prebuilt machine. That being said, I am not sure the work load requires going through the trouble of building from scratch. AutoDesk says the system requirements for CAD & Revit are basically, "Highest affordable CPU speed rating recommended" and the RAM needs to be no less than 4GB. The video card is more specific. They only list 5 cards that are "Certified" to work with this version of Revit. AMD Radeon Pro WX 2100 AMD Radeon Pro WX 3100 Radeon Pro WX 4100 Radeon Pro WX 5100 Radeon Pro WX 7100 Beyond that, the standard stuff would be needed, 250GB SSD, maybe a 1TB second drive. Any ideas on a prebuilt machine with one of those video cards? Or a build list to make one? Budget for either must be at or below $1300
  3. Everyone seems to be saying AMD Ryzen 7. Is that the new CPU from AMD? I don't see any mention of a RAID card. My ThunderBay external RAID will not work with a Windows OS so I'm gonna need a RAID somewhere.
  4. Long time Mac user fed up with Apple's lack of support for Desktop computers looking to make the switch. Current Rig: 2012 Mac Mini CPU: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 Memory: 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Graphics: Intel HD 4000 1536MB HD #1: 480GB SSD HD #2: 750GB SATA Thunderbolt attached: ThunderBay 4 RAID (4TB in RAID 1) for local backup Monitor: ASUS PB278 (27") I do photo editing, magazine and book creating and publication, website creating, and database management. Primary applications are the Adobe Creative Cloud stuff. The Mac Mini is struggling with the work load. Need more power and more internal storage capacity. Would like a 2TB internal RIAD, in RAID 1 setup. Want something that is expandable to grow with my business. Must be stable. My budget is $1900. Question is should I build a machine or buy a complete rig? Would like advice on both.
  5. Thats the thing! I think I can get a much better machine, power and updated wise if I build it rather than going with an Apple. I don't NEED a super powerful $3000 machine. I just need a machine I can easily fix and upgrade, has the newest stuff, and that is stable and reliable. A daily workhorse. Think F150 Work truck and not a Tesla.
  6. I do small simple stuff with video, just tutorials for clients or for Youtube. Nothing "professional". I do websites, print media (business cards, letterhead, etc.) and I publish books and magazines.
  7. Yeah, I don't WANT to drop $3500, thats not my goal here. I am getting by with a late 2012 Mac Mini with i7 2.3 GHz, 16GB of RAM, and a Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536MB.
  8. The "Trash Can" Mac Pro is WAY old for the price. I use Adobe Subscription, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. My ASUS PB278 27" monitor is fine for me, but it would be nice to have 2.
  9. I've got a good, newish ASUS 27" monitor I like so I'm good there. I'd like a new keyboard. I currently use the Apple Magic trackpad but I could go back to a mouse (I guess).
  10. Should I switch from a Mac based workflow to a Windows based workflow?

  11. I'm not a Mac fan-boy but I have been using them since 1996. The problem is, recently I have not been happy with the direction Apple is taking with their desktops. The lack of choice, the price, and lack of upgradable products is very bothersome. In order to get the stuff I need (for graphic design & desktop publishing) I need to drop $3500 on a new Apple. And I will not get everything I want, just what I can get. I use Adobe software so there is no reason to stick with a Mac. Can someone help me speck out a PC (built or I can build) that would be powerful above all STABLE! I do not WANT to drop $3500 if I can help it. What I need in a Computer: 16GB of RAM (min.) i7 processor 256 GB SSD (for the OS) 2TB storage (SSD or SATA but maybe with room to expand) (I'd like to run an internal RAID, right now I use an external software driven raid.) Memory card reader Professional Graphics Card with DisplayPort (min. 2GB, I do not know that much about them) WiFi Bluetooth Ethernet I'd like a Thunderbolt port (or two) I watch Linus all the time and I see all the cool things a PC user can get for his machine, and I'd like some of that goodness. My experience with daily work on a Windows machine is based on my experiences 12 years ago and it was FILLED with the blue screen of death! Is Windows as stable as Mac OS today??? Any advice would be great!
