What about Xeon E3 CPU's? Can one overclock any of those? I have an E3-1231 v3. It only runs at 3.4 GHz (in reality it always runs at 3.8 GHz, but the box says 3.4). Needless to say, it is roughly a 4770/4790 without the graphics, so I assume it has the same characteristics of that chip.

Out Now: Asus ROG Maximus VIII Extreme
skipperkins replied to Marinatall_Ironside's topic in Tech News
Sweet, sweet candy! I always wanted a motherboard like this. I like to think that I could simply buy a used one, but then I look at hte old x79 ROG Black Edition and they still cost a fortune used. I never cease to be amazed at how motherboards and CPU's hold their value. Where should one be looking for premium used parts? I pretty much do ebay and Overclock.net. There used to be kind of a cool computer-only trading site that was invite-only, but I forget it (I only bought two things there anyway). Any ideas? -
It is cool to see new hires. If you had to pick new nationalities, you cannot go wrong with a Taiwanese and a yank.

gtx 670/760 waterblock on the gtx 970?
skipperkins replied to toddleronebar's topic in Custom Loop and Exotic Cooling
Has anyone gone ahead and put a 670 waterblock on a 870? I would love to hear how it went and see a picture or two. I am especially interested in the EK blocks that were touted when the GTX-970 was first released. -
Can I bump this thread for some advice? I know this is taboo on some forums, but I do want ot necro this thread for some updated advice. What is a good webcam these days?

My review of the Monoprice Blue Switch Mechanical Keyboard.
skipperkins replied to Vitalius's topic in Peripherals
This is a great review. I came across this and was considering, but I think I would rather spend a few bucks more for a more upscale product. My problem is that so many mechanical keyboards do not work in my system (Ducky, Corsair k60, Cooler Master, ...). I know someone on the forum who said he had the same problem and the new $180 Corsair keyboards worked for him in the "no software" mode. I wonder if I can get one to work if it has dedicated software (the keyboards plug in but my computer never knows what driver to use). I currently use a Steel Series Z-board, but I really want a mechanical keyboard. I have used them at work for ages. -
Does anyone know what custom copper heat sinks Luke has on his motherboard?

1. Terran 2. Bronze 3. NA 4. Steel Series Starcraft II Zboard (worthless, but better than $5 previous setup), Steel Series Icari (AWESOME) mouse I started playing multiplayer this year. I finally made silver last season, then had EVGA precision ruin Starcraft to the point of unplayability. I lost my last ten games of the season (no mouse), and then finally fixed hte issue, only to be placed in bronze after winning my placement match. Since then I have not won a game. I have seriously lost like 20 games in a row. I wonder if I am cursed.

I recently lost a 2T Seagate Barricuda (only 2-year old) with a 30gb ssd cache. i traded the cache for an old 5400rpm laptop hd. It happened at the worst time when I was out of work. I finally stabilized and bought an Intel 120gb ssd (530) and a 2T hdd (hitachi ultrastar). I only have one game on the SSD (Starcraft II), but there is room for another if it is good. My SSD only have the windows, chrome, MS Office, SQL Server, R, and some random crap. It totals 72gb, so I am good. I would say ssd for important stuff (favorite game, work stuff), and put everything else on a bulk 7200 rpm drive. That said, having lost two Seagate's I bought a hitachi because they are supposedly reliable, but no one said how LOUD hitachi drives are. As for an Intel SSDs, there is nothing better. They even feel better. I mean they literally have better feeling plastic. I am hooked.

Is the 980 contest still on? I could use a GTX980. I just want it to post my build in every forum and have self-righteous jerks scream "bottleneck" whine they see that I am running it with an FX-8150.

This is literally the coolest system I have ever seen. Where can I see more pics?

The best PC games that aren't so demanding graphically
skipperkins replied to GaS's topic in PC Gaming
Starcraft II and Diablo III. Both a great games that can play on Intel integrated or more AMD APUs -
I made silver for the first time. I started playing multiplayer in January of 2014, and i really, really sucked. Now I lost my internet for a few months (out of work), and my first placement put me in Silver. I am surprisingly happy about this. I had resolved myself to permanent bronze league hero status. I love this game.

Terran Bronze North America Steel Series Ikari and dirt cheap keayboard I am terrible at all games. I started PC gaming in 2012 at the ripened age of 33. I love this game. I am terrible at it, but I still love it.

Has anyone had SATA ports die on a motherboard?
skipperkins replied to skipperkins's topic in Troubleshooting
Thanks. I tried this, but I still get the same situation. The only way to get it to work is to use this one SATA port.- 3 replies
