one of the people i occasionally game with is an absolute moron when it comes to computers.
He's been saying for months that he wanted to build his own PC and i guess he got a lot of stuff for christmas. I got a message from him saying that the computer wont boot. So i go though all the normal steps.
monitor wasn't plugged in to begin with. so now was getting a display,
says he can figure everything else out.
press x to doubt
Get a call from him an hour later saying he's still having issues and it still wont boot.
ask what the problem was
error was "no bootable device, insert disk and press any key"
great, maybe dead or corrupted drive already
ask if he was able to install windows before this error.

Him: What do you mean?
Me: did you plug in the USB and get into the windows installer?
Him: What do you mean windows installer? this is a windows PC.
Me: not right now it isn't, you have to install windows onto the computer.
Him: .....i didn't know that. Aren't all of these parts built for windows PCs why doens't it come with windows?
......shit
I think i might avoid him for a while. i'm not going to help that level of troubleshooting.

@Cyberspirit Before this situation i would have said he's at least smart enough to research a bit to make sure he buys the right stuff. but now i'm not so sure.
though he got an R5 3600 with a b450 MB (cant remember the exact one he said), so that's a good start at least. He hit the ground running and immediately tripped over his own legs
-
Poor dude probably sabotaged his own build and is just pretending he doesn't know what he's doing so he has an excuse to invite you over for some troubleshoot & chill

@Arika S I can see it now
4 years time
"Honey... My computer is broken again. Can you come in and help me?"
You walk in to the room...
He's kneeling down in front of you
On the screen you see this

- Format the drive
- boot pc
- error "no bootable device"
- place thumb over "bootable device"
-
it was probably an old pre-built. only had a GTX 660 and some AMD FX CPU.
we also used to play FF14 a lot, he played on ps4 while i played on PC. cross platform works quite well on that game
-
Ah, yeah crossplay is always nice. Still, it's impressive that they never had to reinstall Windows at least once before, to be honest.
Windows loves to bork itself, especially on older hardware.
-
@Cyberspirit Just because they haven't reinstalled Windows before doesn't mean their computer didn't look like this...

@Spotty I know that feeling all too well. Some relatives were complaining about ads a while back so I went over and cleaned things up and installed an adblocker and they were like "Witchcraft! Is this even legal?!"
