Smh, I will never understand why people update their BIOS when there is no need...

Try clearing CMOS and then seeing if it boots. I suspect you bricked your laptop but it's worth trying.

I like the name “Addonics”. Not sure the product is good, but the name pleases me.  If you can’t find any there is always pcb repair. Sucks though.  There are specialists that do it. Microsoldering people. Someone’s Got to know what is wrong in the first place to fix it though.

3 drives? One of which is an SSD? You're beyond fine. An old NAS of mine had 6 or 7 older mechanical drives running off of one SATA connector. Yeah, times were different.

Ah the age old meme of Chrome eating more RAM than Firefox. Even though nowadays it's literally the other way around.

Not that I would know after switching like 6 months ago or anything, noticing a healthy reduction in RAM usage.

ProjectBox153 reacted to manikyath in Is it bad to switch the hot and neutral polarity in AC?
functionally it doesnt matter, but for the sake of safety it does.
essentially, when wiring a switch on mains, you always want to break the live wire. if a sloppy technician along the way swaps wires and your switch now breaks the neutral, whatever you just turned off still has mains voltage supplied to it.

so yes... you can switch it without affecting the functionality of devices, but no, you should NEVER EVER swap them around in a house installation.

Parsec works extremely well in my experience, but I don't know if relying on remote access to your own desktop is the best thing to do. If it gets turned off or loses network connectivity then you'll be having a rough time.
If you don't need super fast responsiveness then you could just use RDP.

ProjectBox153 reacted to pythonmegapixel in Are Chromebooks that Bad?
    Why?

That's exactly the sort of use case that the USB type C spec is intended for. Your laptop isn't charging at phone speeds unless you use a really low quality power supply; there's a protocol which allows devices to negotiate a higher voltage and current so they charge at the same speed they would if they were still using an old-style barrel plug

Uhh, what? How? These days it's easy to find a USB-C charger, and you don't have to worry about forgetting the charger for your laptop at home or work or anywhere else.

There's a lot of old tech around my house, figured I'd post some of it here:
    PowerBooks/MacBook Pro 17" mid 2006:
    Random old tech:
    TRS-80:
My D630 "Chromebook". Not really that retro, but here:
    GameBoys:
There was even more old tech in my house, but a lot of it was eCycled. I really wish my father kept his Mac clone in particular.

ProjectBox153 reacted to manikyath in Is it worth investing in expensive sata cables?
it's a looks thing. or in the case of those super freaking slim sata cables a cable management thing.

past that, i have an actual bin of sata cables, some of which probably 10 years old, and whenever i need a cable, i just grab whichever color pleases me most: cheap red sata cable, cheap black sata cable, cheap red sata cable that turned pink over the years, etc..

i've found that it's easier to hide a sata cable, than to find a sata cable that looks good.

Anything can catch fire. Doesn't mean it will. If it was a quality connector there's no reason to throw it out (though I don't know why you'd be using it if you already had the native cable on the PSU). I don't turn off my PC. I've never had a fire.

ProjectBox153 reacted to D13H4RD in Apple Discontinues iMac Pro
Well, it was never really the kind of machine which would be fitting for a long-term product development cycle, given that it is a stopgap product until a proper Mac Pro was re-introduced.

An all-in-one professional workstation is a niche and not a very sensible machine when long-term expandibility is accounted for.

Made a purchase myself today... An Asus K7M slot A motherboard with an Athlon 550, picked it up from a local shop that actually has a fair bit of vintage stuff.

Also, a while ago my lovely wife found these in a thrift store for me, they were even half off so $1.50 a box!

Not always. Some people just want a desktop computer, not a MacBook plugged into a monitor all the time. The iMac is a one-cable solution for that, and it works really well for a lot of things. The iMac Pro just wasn't what people wanted.

In what way? Those are 2 very different machines, and you haven't stated a use case. Without that it's not really possible to compare them.
