I kinda am. I barely play games, my brother uses my gaming pc way more than I do, but if I do it's older games that run fine on older hardware.

I used to play on a Q9550 OC'd to 3.6ghz (could go higher but ran into mobo issues), 8gb of ram and an R9 290X.

I only have the i3 8100 machine I have now because a friend of mine didn't need his Z370-P anymore and said I could buy it from him for €20. I bought the i3 used for €80, and that was the base for my new machine. it's serving me very well. my brother plays rainbow six siege and this rig is doing very well in that game.

all of those and the blatant haterd of Apple.

they hate Apple so much that they don't bother doing a google search if they can't find a feature. they claimed in the macbook air 2018 review that macos has no window snapping. like seriously?

Might as well throw my experiences here.
I've owned only 4 laptops in my life, so it might be a bit small sample size, but two of those 4 laptops have failed, both of them had a dedicated GPU, and both had the GPU die. It also most likely was due to high temperatures, in both cases. Even after changing thermal paste and cleaning the fan and the heatsink, both of them would constantly be at ~80C idle and sound like jet engines.
One was an Asus laptop from 2009, the other a high-end HP laptop from 2014.

The two that have survived are a Lenovo laptop with a Celeron CPU and iGPU and an Asus laptop with an i3 and iGPU, from 2014 and 2018 respectively. Since I don't have any experiences with newer laptops running a dedicated GPU, I won't say anything about that but if you ask me the laptops from early 2010s and late 2000s definitely are more likely to die if they do have a dedicated GPU, since they're so inefficient and run at high temperatures.

the U stands for Ultra Low Voltage and you're comparing it against an unlocked mid-high end enthusiast Processor.

So 2 very different CPUs that cannot be directly compared, but since you went ahead and did anyway; where you're getting your information from about it "getting smashed"?

    Passmark benchmark

    17.3% increase

    Cinebench R15 (single Core)

    28.8% increase

The only benchmarks i've seen that shows the 2600k beating the 8265u is in multi-core workloads, but even then, just barely

    Cinebench R15 (multi coore)

    10.9% decrease

    Bender BMW27

    5% decrease

With that said, 15w/25w (base/boost) vs 95w. so the fact that it's using 4-5 times less power and still better overall in terms of performance, it pretty damn good. U series processors are not meant to be power houses. 8 years (not 10) gets you a massive efficiency boost for the for the same (if not better) performance.

Hell, in terms of browsing and "normal" workloads, i cannot tell the difference between my laptop with an undervolted and turbo disabled 7200u and my desktop with an overclocked 7600k (4.7Gz).

there Linus says that Laptops die faster than Desktops and that using one from the sandy bridge era (2011 - 2012) is a bad experience.

now, in some ways he's right. if you want to game on a laptop from that era the only games you are gonna be able to play are Minecraft and older titles.

however, for most people that's fine. I have a Toshiba laptop from 2010, it has a first gen i5 and some sort of AMD graphics. the battery is dead, but other than that it's still reasonably quick if you're just web browsing and it runs Minecraft or old games totally fine.

if you are like me and do not play games (ok I do play some, but childhood games so from like 2005 that run on a PlayStation 2) using an older device is totally ok. i have a 2012 13" MacBook Pro (ok it's ivy bridge but it's the same era as the laptops Linus is talking about) and I can edit 1080p footage on that for my YouTube channel, it has a nice ssd in it, 16gb of ram (obviously upgraded myself).. web browsing is fine, video exports take a while but editing is fine, watching YouTube or twitch is fine, like it's a good experience.

now about the bit that laptops die faster, yes and no. if you buy one without a gpu it will last forever. all laptops I've had with dGPU's have either died or had driver issues. however, all laptops I've owned without dGPU's (my 2012 13" MacBook Pro, I have an elitebook from 2012 without a gpu too that's totally fine) have lasted forever and been very stable.

it feels to me that Linus has used gaming laptops (particularly from razer) for too long. not all laptops have crappy quality control and run at 100c and sound like jet engines when you launch a program. that's only gaming laptops.

regardless, I've seen plenty of desktop hardware from that era die, particularly gpu's (my 780Ti died) and motherboards. a desktop isn't magically more reliable than a well designed laptop.

I think you're reading too much into it - all he was saying is that in his experience laptops from about 10 years ago don't feel to him as fast as they used to. My x220 has a sandy chip and came out in 2011, its performance is still just fine in my opinion - but then again I rarely needed it to do anything particularly heavy and it was a fairly high end machine for its time (in relation to its size). The 8850h laptop I just got from work is significantly faster (duh) and Linus routinely uses laptops that are significantly faster than even that so I can see why he'd feel this way.

I think we should all report this en masse to Microsoft as a bug, which as far as I'm concerned it completely is.  There is a system-wide setting for "default web browser" for a reason.  If certain things ignore that it defeats the purpose.

Ashley MLP Fangirl reacted to jmsmuy in why do windows laptops have such terrible trackpads?
From the ones I've tried, i like the macbook touchpads more, to put it easy, I can work with both, but don't miss a mouse as much with my macbook as opposed to my dell, or my acer or even a friends lenovo (this ones are the only ones I had lengthy experience, I tried several other touchpads, but don't think my opinion is valid for just a couple mins of usage). I can only speak for those specific laptops (don't ask me the models, can't remember them).
I had a macbook air, now have a macbook pro and both have a very good touchpad experience.
    Just my 2 cents

    i am aware.

it's sub-optimal, has lag issues, and budget hardware will give you a better experience anyway. a concole that costs $300 will outperform any streaming service.

and it doesn't have a cost advantage either because you have to pay for the service, games and a good internet plan. all of that combined over the lifecycle of a typical console (4 to 6 years) is waaaay more than a console costs.

it's a stupid idea and everything i've seen so far proves me right.

does that mean that you are dumb if you subscribe to a service like that? of course not, that's your money and your choice. i'm just saying that all products currently available are in my opinion worse than "traditional" alternatives that already exist.
