yeah Lubuntu is crazy light. i've ran it on a netbook before and it was fine as long as you adjusted your expectations a little bit.. i mean that laptop was about half the speed of a decent pentium 4 cpu.. 

Lubuntu runs ok on just 2gb of ram.. remember lubuntu from a cold boot uses about 300mb..

Wattage isn't the issue, quality is.

At that point, you might as well just build a new rig. You could easily grab an 8700K and a 1080Ti with that budget.

It's worth upgrading. A i7 3770 would do fine, along with a GPU upgrade. Maybe a RAM upgrade too. What's your budget?

yeah, i bought it a few days ago. i'm SO happy with it. it's a nice upgrade over the 1050 that i had.. 
 
and SO much cheaper than 900 series. i paid about €150 for it, and 980ti's go for €400+.. now yes i did get a good deal, usually 780ti's are about €180 so.. but yeah it's an awesome card.. 

One of the reasons I avoid prebuilts if at all possible.

i doubt that. it's a quad core sandy bridge cpu at about 3 ghz.. 
basically identical to an i5 of the time.

Yes my Xeon machine isn't affected! thanks intel for not messing up as bad as before!
 
EDIT: my laptop is affected.. INTEL WHY

if you mean pure cpu performance the i7 will be a lot faster with multi threaded tasks.

scroll down to multi threaded. that's where the big difference is. 

Tablet mode is enabled, just start typing tablet mode and the setting should show up.

even with a 1080ti as well? i would be a little nervous if i tried that.. 

@hconverse02 why would you pair an 8700K with a 550W psu? you can't overclock on that... 

And test different slots and different sticks.

try to reseat the ram first. 

my pc has 18 ram slots.. so not really. 
 
they should also get bonus points for ram features, like ECC. 
 
the budget for the rest of the system should be around €500 - $588.64

it's a cool idea, but i'd like them to actually have to build a system that all of the ram fits inside of. it's cool if you get 20 sticks, but you need a system that everything fits into. the most ram in the system counts. 

it's also build quality. business hardware is better built than consumer stuff. i have a HP EliteBook Folio 9470m and everyhthing still feels solid, even though it's quite old. the only thing i've had to fix was the thermal compound.
