the only thing that command does is make software for different architectures available to install. that doesn't mean they will run, because arm is not the same as x86.

for people replying who know more about bottlenecking than me, that cpu is basically the performance of an i7-6700.

Ashley MLP Fangirl reacted to DrMacintosh in does Apple have a good reason for this?
Yes, there is a very real reason and it involves graphics APIs. Cant believe that people seriously defaulted to rhetoric rather than actually trying to give a real answer.

macOS used to run on OpenGL but Apple has started to phase that out and the entire OS runs in Metal now. Everything from 2011 and below is not capable of running the Metal 2 API in Mojave.

We know this because Apple allows old Mac Pros to run Mojave as long as the user installs an RX 560 or better.

R9 Cards and older do support Metal 2, but the recommendation from Apple is to go for the officially supported cards which range from Polaris refresh RX 560 to the WX cards.

Those cards have been tested and the OS is designed to work best with them.

Mid 2010 is a far back as you can go with the Mac Pros as long as you install a supported GPU

Yep, those machines have modern enough iGPUs and dGPUs that they can run Metal 2.

ok i checked, i didn't disable all the power saving stuff becauyse that makes my system very unstable, i know from experience. that's probably because i have a server board so i have all these options for the QPI links and stuff... i did check the setting for pci-e link state power management and that was disabled.

anyway, i installed Manjaro KDE and so far everything is ok. no screen tearing and playing back a 1080p 60fps youtube video on the RX460's screen seems to be ok. no lag or anything.

so it seems to have been fixed now. massive thanks for all your help!

@kirashi i find the windows 7 start menu much more easy to use.

for example, win32  apps have the horribly small icons in the menu. why don't they just fill the whole tile. i can barely see the icons, which makes it so i have to look for them which is annoying and takes time.

i know Windows search isn't entirely seperate, but why take up space on my taskbar with a button for it then?

damn that is a nice machine. me wants!

but yeah you can play around with voltage and stuff but honestly i wouldn't risk it. once you do that heat output and power consumption will rise significantly. and it will shorten the lifespan of the system.

base clock is not a great idea because as LTT has shown in the past if you adjust it you throw a number fo different things into confusion too, which can make the system unstable very quickly.

that system at 4.2ghz is already an absolute beast for it's age and not a bottleneck in gaming at all with that gpu.

Ashley MLP Fangirl got a reaction from Crunchy Dragon in PC to uni! Upgrade or nah?
if it's working fine for you then don't upgrade.

if you do want a little bit more multi-core cpu power a pretty easy thing to do would be sell your i5 and buy a used 4th gen i7 to replace it... a 4770K crushes your i5 in multi-core speed because of hyperhtreading. do check your PSU first though. i7's consume a bit more power i think.

i've got an MSI R9 290X and under full load it gets to 94 degrees celsius and stays there, throttling... that card is a furnace.
