it doesn't say it's gonna delete your desktop, it says it's gonna delete <insert packages> and then its up to you to know that it's gonna delete the desktop.

i have about 8 years of linux experience, i've never seen a distro do ANYTHING like that before. Pop is a bad distro all round anyway but this just certified it in my mind.

it's also important to note that if you use a distro that isn't stupid, this doesn't happen.

There's an incompatibility and you can decide to either install new package B and remove installed package A or not. You can decide which package you want to keep. It doesn't even do this automatically, there's a prompt and you have to type in "yes" to make it do your bidding.

It's a shitty user experience if you don't want to read the things you are authorizing or do not have the ability to understand them. As soon as things go slightly out of whack you're done for. But at least with Linux you can learn your way around. Whenever I encountered problems with my work PC running Windows, I chased it down to some years old issue that was closed by some Microsoft guy saying "this is how it is, deal with it". You'll have a hard time bricking your system in Windows, but that's just because you have a hard time doing anything that Microsoft didn't expect you to do.

It's odd he didn't go with Manjaro because it actually comes with Steam pre-installed out of the box. It'll surely work there.

it can work well, but doesn't a lot of the time. the problem is the people making those "lists" are idiots and the lists are pointless.

Dependencies problems, apt is famous for that, where if you remove or update an software it deletes the previous dependencies that aren't used by the app that you it isn't using anymore and because steam depends on a lot of dependencies, it ended up deleting a UI dependency that popos-desktop depends on it a lot of packages on their repos has flags for that but steam passed unoticed so it ended up breaking everything.

If you search on debian/ubuntu foruns you can find that steam wasn't the first package that it happened.

    - corsair you can fix with ckb-next, a linux alternative for icue. it's interface is a bit less pretty but it works.
    - office yea, you might be able to get by with the web version or libreoffice but not everyone can.
    - some games don't work indeed, most do at this point though.
    - idk what that is lol

linus chose a bad distro and didn't read the terminal messages. what linus experienced does not happen to 99.999999999% of users

Not gonna read through 4 pages so apologies if someone has already explained this before me.

The problem seems to come from Pop using a custom library (if you freeze the video you can see the offending library is libgbm1) to handle GPU buffer allocation. Installing Steam apparently overrides this with the default library and in doing so breaks several dependencies with Pops DE which gets uninstalled as a result.

Honestly, this is a Pop issue, not a Linux issue. They should be shipping the Steam Runtime package and not the Steam Native package. The former is essentially Steam but with static versions of all its dependant libraries self contained, the latter uses system installed libraries.

Honestly though, they probably should just be using the default library to begin with.

    a few reasons.
    - they include weird stuff like an in-house power management thing. great when it works, super bad when it doesn't as there's almost no documentation on how to turn it off or yeet it when it causes problems.
    - the packages they use are curated by them, not by Ubuntu's team. that means you can get newer stuff and newer nvidia drivers in some cases, but those aren't validated for that version of ubuntu and can cause massive issues.
    - they also include in-house gnome extentions. again, great when they work, but when they don't the official gnome documentation won't help you as the setup is not stock. to be clear Ubuntu has modified gnome too, but it has such a large install base that troubleshooting is relatively easy.

and last but certainly not least i've found it to be very unpredictable and breaking things on it's own, like Linus showed us in the video 🤣

Oh no it's fixed now, and there are programs with similar problems that aren't available as Snaps/Flatpaks (CLI stuff mainly). One current issue I have is that I'm using a version of libxml which is newer than the version on the community branch because another tool (latexmlmath) requires it.
