And that's why I think that this series can have a very positive effect on Linux as a whole. Because it shines some light on the issues that users can have. And it sounds like there are cases where developers have already made changes or are at least looking into changes to improve the experience.

Yes, intuitive GUI development is very, very hard. And there's a reason why big companies spend a huge amount of money on this, but it would help if folks would be less defensive and more open about this. As a new user, what would encourage you to stay with the OS more if you ran into a problem:
Answer a) Yes, we know this is not optimal and we want to get better but we don't have the resources or know-how to fix this. But thanks for the input, this does help and we'll try to make it better if we can.
Answer b) Well, you know if you would've read the (insert man page, documentation, forum post, reddit thread, git-hub page) you would have know that what you did was wrong and should have been done differently. Please don't waste our limited dev time with useless queries like this.

I know what would encourage me.

the thing is though it's not a beta product. Linux can be very powerful if you know how to use it, and suits some people's needs MUCH better than Windows. for me, i got into it because i wanted to try it (when i was like 12, i heard about it and was like oh i'm trying it) and immediately fell in love with it. it doesn't do anything behind your back and you are in full control at all times, which i love. it doesn't install candy crush on it's own, doesn't update on it's own when i don't want it to, i have total control.

the thing is though, you have to know how to use it in order to fully take advantage of it. Windows is the same, but people just overlook the fact that if you use Windows all your life things that are idiotic feel normal.

like, if i have to set up a new machine, i pop in a usb with a custom manjaro iso that i made on it, that automatically runs a script after install that applies all my settings and installs all my apps for me. i can't do that on Windows. i'm sure there is a way, but i don't know it.

to me, a fulltime Linux/Mac user, Windows is the OS that feels weird. if i'm using Windows and encounter a problem, i have to google it. on Linux, i probably know the command from memory.

see my point? if you are used to something it becomes your normal. if i have to completely delete the nvidia driver for example because it messed up, on linux i run 1 command i have typed dozens of times now and know from memory. on Windows, i have to look up a guide.

just to address this as linus mentioned it, Canary discord, aka Discord Canary, is kinda like Chrome canary. it's the beta version where they test features. it's not just a linux thing, you can use it on any platform discord supports.

i had that exact thing but with Windows 🤣

i had constant issues like it forcing updates when i got home from school (i had a shitty pc at that time, having windows update running in background nuked my fps), etc etc. i keep saying this, if you know how to use it, linux is fine. but as with anything, you have to invest some time into learning the OS first.

like, for example right, if i had to reinstall a windows system i'd have to get all my settings the way i like them again, install all my crap through a browser and a bunch of installers.. takes me hours to do. for Linux, i have a custom iso file that runs a script after install that adjusts my settings and installs all my crap for me. takes like 10 minutes to set up a linux install that way.

Snap is basically proprietary software because it fully relies on a closed-source server, and that removes user choice by forcing everything through Canonical. This is the exact sort of thing the free software movement condemns for philosophical reasons. Even Microsoft's very own AppGet package manager supports creating and adding custom repos, while Snap doesn't. When even Microsoft has made something that's more free (as in freedom) than Snap, there's probably something wrong.

AppImages, on the other hand, are hated for technical reasons about its design. There are no AppImage repos and repo maintainers, it's just every app developer for themselves releasing AppImages on their website, and users are expected to execute the software they've downloaded from a website. This is very similar to how Windows programs are distributed, and it's seen as insecure (websites can get hacked or just be run by malicious people in the first place, malicious executables can be distributed with no one to stop you, update distribution is now the developer's responsibility, there's often websites impersonating official download pages where they distribute malware instead)

It's a shame because these are 2 of the 3 best ways for easy cross-distro app distribution. Thankfully there's still Flatpak, which some still hate because it uses a lot more disk space than native builds distributed through the distro's package manager, but at least it's not insecure or proprietary.

when Ubuntu started cramming them down your throat. if you issue "sudo apt install chromium" in the latest ubuntu releases it actually installs the snap, not the deb package like you ordered the system to do. an OS should NEVER do something like that, especially a Linux OS.

Snap is pretty awful, installing stuff inside weird sandboxes, so it won't use your default configuration in your dot files, so you have to configure everything again for each individual snap package.

My experience with snap has been terrible, so I understand why people would curse it publicly.

Speaking of dot files. I always took it for granted that when I install a new flavor of Linux or just upgrade my given distro with a fresh install, that basically everything I use just stays as it was. Everything is configurated like I configurated it before, everything looks the same, my desktop wallpaper is the same etc. etc. it's just that I now have a new operating system.

Not so with Windows. Clean install means clean install and you have to configure everything all over again, which is a major pain in the ass, instead of just copying over your dot files.

I just wanted to point out how Linus' point on downloading files from GitHub was a bad point, especially when he demonstrated how he downloaded the file. Not only did anyone reacting to the video act just as confused, but the whole "naming a HTML file with a .sh extension" is actually the fault of GitHub and not Firefox nor Manjaro/Arch/Linux OSs.

I just tried doing exactly what he did on Windows, using both Firefox and Edge, and the same problem happened. It offered to download a Firefox HTML with a *.java extension, or for Edge a JAVA File with a *.java extension, where their contents were clearly HTML code. Ignoring the fact that he clearly doesn't know how "Save Link As..." works, the rest of this was posed as a criticism of Linux which is straight up lying.

@Ashley MLP Fangirlif you wanna get some first-hand experience with Windows bootable media, Microsoft's documentation is actually quite good, and there are PowerShell interfaces for most of it. Much of it has to be done from a Windows installation, but it works fine in a VM.

These are the top-level docs you can use to extract Windows disk images from a Windows install DVD and start customizing them: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/dism---deployment-image-servicing-and-management-technical-reference-for-windows?view=windows-11

This is the docs for the Sysprep utility, which you might also use: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/sysprep--generalize--a-windows-installation?view=windows-11

These are the docs on WinPE, which is used both for recovery media and the Windows installer DVDs: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/winpe-intro?view=windows-11

this is a native Linux tool for dealing with Windows images whose functionality overlaps with Microsoft's DISM tools: https://wimlib.net/

you don't have to bother, of course. I'd just rather direct people to the tools than only leave others with second-hand opinions

Making custom bootable Windows media fucking sucks, and the tools on offer create a Windows image that deliberately gimps itself by refusing to run normal Windows executables unless you trick it about being a portable media installation. And to bypass the install wizard, you have to actually write a big XML file (ew) that actually fills out all the fields the install wizard expects (double ew). That wizard changes all the time without warning, so if you want to maintain a custom Windows installer you probably also want a continuous integration pipeline and someone to babysit it.

Alternatively you can use an imaging system and a tool called sysprep (and maybe some competing proprietary tools), where you perform a full installation and then ‘generalize’ it by making it forget the details of some of the hardware it's installed on. You can also combine that approach with some of the other tools used for preparing custom installation media.

It's a disaster. In contrast to a Linux live environment, which is virtually indistinguishable from a full Linux installation, WinPE is nothing like a full Windows installation. You can't add the latest version of PowerShell on a normal WinPE boot disk, if that's what you want to use to write your post-install script

most of the time, if you want to download software from it, there's a releases section. more often than not though since he's running Manjaro, there will be a package for the software in the AUR, almost all github repo's i've seen have that.

    for example:

that program as shown is an open source app to control speed on Mac's running Linux. as you can see by the -git, this is a package that downloads the program directly from github and compiles it for you, so you don't need to do anything else.
