The PopOS Steam package was broken for a short time. This was just bad timing. The pop maintainers must be ruing the day.

i know how it happend, just not why. issuing an install command should never do that, i know that and i have 8-9 years of linux experience.

yeah obviously, it takes time to learn an OS. if you showed Windows to someone who'se never used it before they'd have the same kinds of problems.

never tried it, i have seen a package in the AUR for it so on Arch(based) it should be easy.

anyways, have you seen this? https://docs.darlinghq.org/build-instructions.html

it is for the most part. look at luke's section of the video. if you go with a good distro then you're mostly set.

yes, some stuff requires some effort to get working, but i see that as a learning oppurtunity rather than a chore. i guess it's just how you view things.

    - corsair you can fix with ckb-next, a linux alternative for icue. it's interface is a bit less pretty but it works.
    - office yea, you might be able to get by with the web version or libreoffice but not everyone can.
    - some games don't work indeed, most do at this point though.
    - idk what that is lol

the reason why Mint didn't work for you is because they typically ship an older kernel. that increases stability, but means that any recent hardware won't work with it for a while until Mint updates their stuff.

since peppermint will not be updated almost for sure, when it does go EOL i'd try Mint first, since that card will propably work now. if it does not work, try either Kubuntu non-lts, that has a newer kernel. or anything Arch based like Manjaro, but doing that does mean re-learning some commands if you are used to peppermint's terminal.

Yes the issue was not updating the OS before trying to install steam. But that's the whole point of this section being illustrative of the problem, you install your OS, you don't get a prompt to install updates, you try to install steam, you run into a weird error, you google for that error, and what you find is "force install it", not "your repos might be out of date, update and retry".

It doesn't say "this will delete your DE", it says "it might break things" but with zero information as to what/how/why or if it actually will or not... and forcing this is actually the "correct" solution in some cases, leading to that being found in searches.

    a few reasons.
    - they include weird stuff like an in-house power management thing. great when it works, super bad when it doesn't as there's almost no documentation on how to turn it off or yeet it when it causes problems.
    - the packages they use are curated by them, not by Ubuntu's team. that means you can get newer stuff and newer nvidia drivers in some cases, but those aren't validated for that version of ubuntu and can cause massive issues.
    - they also include in-house gnome extentions. again, great when they work, but when they don't the official gnome documentation won't help you as the setup is not stock. to be clear Ubuntu has modified gnome too, but it has such a large install base that troubleshooting is relatively easy.

and last but certainly not least i've found it to be very unpredictable and breaking things on it's own, like Linus showed us in the video 🤣

just a note, that power adaptor problem doesn't exist if you live in a region with sensible power outlets. in europe, the outlets on powerstrips are mounted sideways to prevent that problem.

Ashley MLP Fangirl reacted to AndreiArgeanu in Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF issue with USB ports
USB headers on the motherboard most of the time aren't really made for high power applications so the front USB ports on the case often aren't meant for things like hard drive. I have a similar issue with my desktop pc that has a normal mATX pc case where if I plug my 3.5 inch drive with external power into the front USB 2.0 or 3.0 the hard drive connects and disconnects randomly and I can barely do anything with it however if I use the ports on the rear it works perfectly fine. The main solution to your problem would be to just use the ports on the rear of the optiplex, assuming the hard drive will work fine on those.

but the time it takes to get up and running is significantly longer. not to mention it bricking from updates is far more common than macOS.

a great quote i saw online: "Linux is only free if you don't value your time". that's my perspective on it. i use it often as for some stuff i need ti's just the best option, but it's much more time consuming than my macbook pro.

with my macbook i just set it up, updates are seamless and if something does go wrong i can just restore from a time machine backup and be up and running again within an hour.
