  1. is the app open source? if not then you have no idea what it's really doing.
  2. since you are so picky, i'd go to a large electronics store that sells displays and just compare them in the store if they have them on display...
  3. you realize a huge part of Apple's appeal is their respect for the privacy of their users? it would be a huge blow if they simply allow government apps to track location data.
  4. well you can make a recommendation for that hardware. since OP has low ram, a distro that's light on ram would be best here, like Xubuntu.

you'd have to compare to a similarly priced laptop. comparing to a desktop isn't fair since there is no custom board, screen etc included in that cost.
  6. welcome to android. android phone makers have been pushing mid range cpu's on consumers for a long time now.

comparing a laptop that uses like 40w at most to a desktop that has a power limit of hundreds of watts is not fair. you have to compare products to their direct competitors. the video was about raw performance.
  8. my guess is that this will be happening more often, especially with smaller manufacturers like google. they simply don't have the volume to justify getting the chips, like Apple does.
  9. i own a GTX 690 as well and i'll save you the trouble, it doesn't work and never will work properly in linux due to linux not having SLI support. dualboot Windows for your games or just go back to Windows. it'll be better on that hardware.

      1. I can agree with you to a point, but it's not entirely off comparison as the same unit of measurement is being used for both. Objectively it's a true comparison to say a Ferrari is faster than a grand caravan, even if that comparison isn't apples to apples. purposes are very different there, but with apple vs pc, they both advertise being better than the other as a computer, so I think it is a fair comparison in some regards, though not a very useful one. To your point of direct competitors, I think it's important to go based off price, not just the class of product assigned by the company. If Apple is going to price a low power laptop the same as a medium to high powered desktop, then they can expect to be compared in that ring. Price is king.

      2. My post was honestly more of a joking comment. While advertising and price can lead apple to be compared to a does-it-all medium pc, apple does cater more towards creatives and also includes a swath of features accordingly, so that falls in the cost as well. Many will add MAC OS included as part of the cost, but as Windows comes included as part of most prebuilt pcs, I consider those to cancel each other out and leave that to preference. To each their own.

That's fair though my same point remains. Regardless of where you believe the value lies, Apple is more expensive on a hardware basis.

  11. i'm actually kinda impressed with the gaming abilities of my 2012 MBP... it runs Leage of Legends at medium settings very well.

for a laptop with a dualcore cpu and integrated graphics that's not bad in my opinion

too many apps in my Dock,

I think you mean "shortcuts in my Task Bar"

  14. ok so I did an experiment, I put the ssd and ram from my 15" MBP in my 13", did a fresh Catalina install and now it's running a whole lot better. it still doesn't like being left alone for a while, it'll start running slow on any task running, like the screensaver for example will start stuttering. but all the instability and stuttering while navigating the OS is gone.

  15. i use sleep/hibernate all the time, i don't wanna reopen my shit everytime i boot it up lol
  16. i did a fresh install numerous times. it's ok on other OS's so i'm guessing my hardware is fine...
  17. but be honest, those computers would be better off with an older lighter OS. like, yeah, my 2012 13" unibody MBP running Catalina is usable, but it lags and stutters on basically all desktop animations, booting takes ages, the cpu is constantly under relatively high load... and mind you it's not stock. it has an ssd and double the ram it had when it was new. i can't imagine running Catalina with only 4gb of ram and a spinning disk...
  18. it was already unsupported, those models do not run Big Sur. and to be honest i don't even mind. Catalina is a nightmare on my 2012 13" Unibody (identical in cpu and gpu to the Retina), and i'm debating rolling that back to High Sierra which is what the 2011's got dropped on, since that at least appears more stable on this kind of older hardware. like, you can't support a product forever, at some point it's better to stop updates because if you keep going the system will end up running like complete crap resulting in a bad experience for the user which you don't want if you're Apple.
  19. as if Samsung doesn't do that as well lmaooooo i can jailbreak it which makes all those arguments invalid, and that is a valid argument to use because andoid fans are always going on about rooting, which is effectively the same. there are loads of android phones with a locked bootloader as well.

sooo since i stopped gaming like a year ago i n…

no i like some computing power but i just don't do anything that requires loads of local storage...
  21. uh no that's not true. regardless iPhones keep their value really well so i don't care either way.
