  1. oh my god, i was watching ON FLOATPLANE, READ!!!!
  2. speaking on bandwidth and "more resolution isn't always better", i was watching this on floatplane, on a 2012 13" MacBook Pro, which only has a 1280x800 display. therefore, there's no need for me to bump the res to 1080p (the max i have as i don't have the 4k tier, there's no point i don't have a 4k display), and look at this: look at the blockyness of the background. i wish since Linus obviously knows that it matters that the 720p experience was actually good, because why else would you have it. i understand that setting it to 1080 on this computer is pointless, since it only has a 720p display effectively, but then the quality is so bad it looks more like 480 due to all the blocks..... ugh
  3. i'm going to attempt an SSD upgrade for my 2015 MBP. i can't deal with 120gb anymore. just my icloud pictures library is 20gb...

  5. something interesting i've noticed. Pop music in USA and Europe is all digital autotuned crap, with no real instruments in it basically ever, unless it's an "alternative" artist like MGK.

but, i've been listening to tons of J-Pop lately and that has guitars and drums, even some shredding. very interesting to see the contrast.

It's also basically the same chord progression (if there even is one) over and over and across so many songs.

    Just installed Windows 11 22H2, I was promised…

meanwhile macOS has had this since like, 2016? iirc it was added in Sierra....
  7. no! i don't like super slim bezels, i actually want a bezel around my display. 13" with bezel and full keyboard is heaven.
  8. lol. yeah, web devs these days assume high res which is annoying. i don't want a 15" laptop i like my small little 13"... yeah you can request features, i'll do that.
  9. i only really noticed this on my laptop, which has a 2560x1600 display at 200% scaling, so effectively 1280x800. why is that sidebar so big? it could be a 6th that wide and just have the icons for everything when viewing it on a smaller display right?

the problem with Arch is that it breaks on it's own, even for experienced users. Ubuntu is rock solid mostly, unless Linus uses it lol

yeah it is. a godsend for people like me, my newest Mac is from 2015 lmao. now, i'm very comfy running older OS's, my main Mac is on High Sierra at the moment still, but once that becomes no longer viable (High Sierra is the oldest version that google chrome still supports for example) even i will have to upgrade... and being able to go to Ventura will give my old Mac hopefully an extra year or 2.
  12. you might have tripped the power supply overcurrent protection. have you tried unplugging the computer from power, leaving it for 10 minutes and then powering it on? without the new gpu installed ofc?
  13. he needs to at least make sure the forum doesn't cost him money to run, monetizing with ads is a way to do that. if you don't want it just block it. easy enough.
  14. this place costs money to run. he doesn't make anything off of it, he's said so on the WAN show.
  15. if privacy badger blocked it then all is fine no? do you have any idea how many websites use google analytics, google ads and amazon ads? if you don't want it then the solution is to block it which you've already done.

If something has lived long enough to be sold as second hand, it's probably good, with exceptions obviously for things that have a very clearly limited lifespan, ie, HDDs, SSDs etc

But for how long?  If they’ve all got enough writes on them yet to be useful there is that. The pre tested thing is valid in this case.  SSDs as I understand it don’t get flakey before they die. They work till they suddenly don’t.  Good for only one more write has certain uses with SSDs though.  At least that’s how I understand it.  My understanding is not deep though.  There is always a reason things get sold used.  Sometimes it’s just “I got a better one” which is common enough with video cards. Less so with SSDS though.  Even a slow ssd is still fast.

I’ve had some bad luck from used and refurbished laptops from the 2000 to 2010 era. Not so much from more modern hardware.

  21. time to show off my latest Mac. a Late-2006 MacBook Pro.

I paid €30 for this beast. it's got a few dead keys on the keyboard, but nothing I can't work around. I've installed 10.6 and 10.7 dual boot, put an SSD in it, it's an absolute beast. the battery still holds a charge too and lasts for about an hour, which is really good for a Mac this old.

aside from some scratches and small dents on the corners it's in really good condition. also, big shout out to https://github.com/blueboxd/chromium-legacy for maintaining an up-to-date version of Chromium that runs on 10.7, so I don't even need Linux on here to get an up-to-date web browser which is super useful.

I mainly bought this to add to my Mac collection, but in playing around with it I discovered that it's an amazingly capable system still. as long as you work within it's limits, mainly the 2gb of ram, it can still browse the web, do office work etc. you'd need an up to date OS for serious work obviously but it can still do it.

I'm super happy with it, shoutout to the seller who packaged it really well and didn't scam me 🙂

if you've read this far enjoy this picture, 2015 MBP on the left, iMac G3 on the right and the 2006 MBP right in the middle. 🙂

ps. iMac G3 isn't broken, the stripe that you see on it's display is the result of the CRT refresh rate not matching the camera.

  22. uuuuuh so Linus claimed that to get the 1280P performance in a new laptop you need to spend $2K? no you don't... lol. the M2 blows it away and you can buy a Mac with an M2 for way less than $2K...

I doubt that, it's still running just fine. it's also a crystal edition so it was made in 2000, just before the capacitor plague. I have also opened this up a few times to clean the dust out and to reseat a loose cable. the board looked fine...
