@Windows7ge i did that once in a VM and then tried to run a sudo command and it was like "sudo: command not found" and i was like welp, reverting snapshot lol

  2. It’s odd. My battery health on my iPhone 8 Plus fell to 84% relatively quickly, like within a year. 5 months into my second year of ownership and it’s still at 84%.

my replacement battery did that too. got it replaced in january iirc, fell to 83% after a few months and it's still at 83%... iPhone 6s if you were wondering.

  3. i'm really liking iOS 14. Apple have really polished the dark theme to the point where i really enjoy using it now.

all the little things such as the buttons when you have a contact selected being clearly spaced apart and a different shade of grey so you can easily see them is so nice.

@soldier_ph to be honest if you update on iOS X.0 releases you should expect glitches and bugs. when new OS's come out you should basically always disable updates until X.1 is out to avoid most of the bugs, that's always been the case.

  4. Got my new 128GB Samsung microSD for expanded storage on my S20, so far I've transferred all my FLAC files onto it, not sure anything else will be needed to be on this apart from my music library.

  5. This is literally the first time I've bought and owned a latest release device, and I'm enjoying every second of it so far. The pinhole camera isn't even very noticable due to just how gargatuan the screen is to be begin with.

the pinhole would bother me but that's just because i am used to the clock being in the top middle of the display so my reflex is to look there...

Just stick to the 1998 cartoon version.

  9. I did a bit of a journey back to 2012 software and website design! I so so so so wish UI design went back to this, all of these old programs look SO GOOD!!!!

@DrMacintosh i know, but the Finder lacking contrast also gives it something... idk. i prefer this over Catalina and Big Sur's Finders any day though, maybe i'm biased with growing up with this UI design, i was 12 or 13 when this OS was current.

still though, it looks so much better than modern OS's. modern UI design is so flat and lifeless. these old UI's are so full of glossy refletions, the buttons glow with gloss when you hover over and click on them, ironically this looks more graphically demanding and imo more impressive on a technical level than moden flat UI's.

  10. ok, so i did an experiment. i dualbooted my 2012 MBP, with it's original OS. OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion. mostly because i wanted to try it and also because i want to run a few apps on there that modern macOS no longer works with.

and holy hell, is it FAST!

i know some people who just don't update their Mac's ever, and keep them on the OG OS, and they might be on to something. on 10.8 boot time is literally at most 7 seconds, from the point of pressing the power button. anything i click opens lightning fast, there are no beach balls, it boots up so fast the spinning circle below the apple logo doesn't even appear.

now this is expected, this MBP originally shipped with 500gb of spinning rust and 4gb of ram. it now has a 500GB 850 EVO (120gb allocated to 10.8, the rest to Catalina) and 16gb of ram. so i'd expect it to be fast as hell but not this fast. it's almost addicting how speedy it is. i'm used to it taking a second to load system preferences but on 10.8 it's just instant.

i might try to see how much i can get done on 10.8, of what i normally do on my Mac so i can use it like that a lot.. a bunch of my tasks should be easy to do on 10.8 since i don't need modern software for it. things like email, youtube, old games, spotify (i often listen to music while reading through inbox) should all still work on 10.8... maybe not totally secure but like, nothing i do is mission critical and i'll put an antivirus on it. this is gonna be fun to experiment with.

    1. Ashley xD

      Ashley xD

@ProjectBox153 that's a difficult option. I was able to get 10.8 just by booting internet recovery since it came with this Mac, if I wanted 10.9 I'd have to get it from unofficial sources and I don't wanna do that. besides 10.8 is fine for what I want to use that OS for anyway which is old programs.

  11. I'm done. So freaking done. Microsoft's own email is worse than a computer with a single core cpu and a 5400 rpm hdd trying to run Doom on ultra. Outlook flagged MY OWN FUCKING EMAIL ADDRESS as spam! HOW. I really want to switch to something that doesn't suck donkey cock, but to what and how can I switch EVERYTHING over? My whole life is basically connected to that email (which probably is not good to begin with). Idk. I may just have to make a thread about it at some point.

    1. Ashley xD

      Ashley xD

you could set it up to send whatever you recieve on that email to whatever service you go over to, so if your original email is donald-duck@outlook.com you could set that account up to send anything it recieves to mickey-mouse@gmail.com if that is your new email, that'll help with things you forget to transfer over. just keep in mind that if you want to reply to an email that was sent to your new adress it's best to log in to outlook and reply there since the person emailing you won't expect you to reply with the new adress.

for all of your online accounts it's super easy, just go through each one and set it to the new email. any that you forget will come through from your old adress.

and for all the people you interact with who would not know you switched emails it's a matter of contacting them and having them change your contact info to include the new adress.

@DrMacintosh indeed. there is actually a very vibrant community around Big Sur themes for Linux since it's apparantly super easy to do. even the custom firefox i have that looks like Safari was predone.. https://github.com/vinceliuice/WhiteSur-gtk-theme/tree/master/src/other/firefox

you'd be surprised how easy it is to find Big Sur themes.

  15. What games out there work best with controllers? Also I kinda hate how controllers don't ship with a Li-On battery pack and instead use disposable cells.

I detest disposable battery cells. They're incredibly wasteful.

    1. Ashley xD

      Ashley xD

you mean AA batteries? you can get rechargable one's. those will work just fine but they won't last as long on a charge but like you can recharge them.

  16. well, it has finally happened. Linux has become better for my use than Windows. i needed to edit a video and i missed kdenlive, also i've started using a lot more foss programs for all my use and those just aren't as good for Windows.

@RoseLuck462 for me it's about 1 app, kdenlive. yes, you can get that on Windows too but the windows version is buggy.

  17. I have 4 SATA ports. 1 has my 480GB SSD, the other has my aging 5400 RPM WD Green 2TB HDD, the last one has a standard optical drive in it.

I need to replace the HDD simply because its like almost 9 years old but I also want to expand my storage a little but.

I was thinking of replacing the 2TB with a 2TB Seagate 7200rpm Barracuda, but idk if I should get a SATA SSD to fill up the last slot. My 480GB boot SSD only has like 98GB Free so its pretty full.

    1. Ashley xD

      Ashley xD

get that stuff of off there as fast as you can in that case, but i'd keep that drive around for games as it's perfectly suitable for that.

what is wrong with a 9 year old drive? as long as it's not storing any critical data (i still use a WD Green from 2009 for my steam library) it's totally ok.

@soldier_ph it's not the 690. i currently have my R9 290X in it and the issue also happened with a known good RX460. that slot was just bad, since i put the card in the other slot it's been 100% stable. before i'd have 3 crashes a day at least, now it's been on all day without any problems.

i swear, i'm so pissed off that i finished school before covid. online lessons were my dream, i always tried to do as much work at home as i could, because i hated having to do it with teachers walking around and other people making noise around me and distracting me. if this had happened 2 years ago school would have been so much better for me.

part of the reason is that i have autism so i'm super easily distracted, i work best with noise cancelling headphones on and facing a wall so that i see nothing distracting, but at school that wasn't always possible or allowed so i hated having to do work there.

    2. (See 1 other reply to this status update)

@DrMacintosh i did notice the vague performance mode thing in the bios was set to max performance for some reason, i didn't remember ever touching that but i set it to auto and that adjusted a load of cpu settings so hopefully that was it

    2. (See 1 other reply to this status update)

  24. i figured out why my pc was freezing.

    the problem was

    drumroll

    MSI Afterburner.

if it's open and a custom fan curve is applied then my pc crashes after a while.

if it's not open (i uninstalled it) then everything is fine.

    1. Ashley xD

      Ashley xD

@DrMacintosh i could live with 5 minute shutdown time. the symptoms here were a bit more severe.

the symptom was that after some gaming the pc would lock up, like you can hear it in the audio that it's frozen, the displays would go black and the gpu fan would spin up to 100% and stay there until you force rebooted the pc.

that's a little more annoying than a long shutdown.
