  1. so i found a version of firefox that's still being somewhat updated that works on OSX 10.8...

it's really nice to have this. i haven't found any broken websites yet on Chrome 49, but eventually that will happen... the version of Chrome i'm using is 4 years out of date so...

my quest to be able to spend a lot of time in OSX 10.8 is becoming reality, which i love just because of how fast this OS feels.

  2. i'm really happy with iOS 14 :)

my phone is the most basic thing ever, a 64gb iPhone 6s, but even so it doesn't feel any slower than iOS 13 did, and i have only noticed 1 bug.

that bug being that if i have some video playing (tiktok or youtube) and i press home, it sometimes stutters slightly for a second or 2.

that's it. normally i stay away from X.0 releases but i wanted the widgets, and i don't regret updating so soon :)

Betting it’s YouTube. Google has apparently made a move on Apple with YouTube on iOS 14.  Not sure of the particulars.  Something about picture-in-picture, but that never worked for me on an iphone7+ anyway so I’m not sure what is up there.

I reverted back to iOS 13.5.1 (SHSH Blobs) because I hated the control center, only reason lol

  3. when you spend 5 years slagging apple off for running the cpu at it's max rated temperature under full load, and 5 years of people here screaming at you that it doesn't matter, they've done that since forever and we don't see piles of macbooks with dead cpu's, it took 1 email from an engineer to change your mind.

not the 5 years of people here screaming at you, but 1 email from an engineer.

    i have no words.

It's easy to tune you two out because of your overwhelming bias.

You more so than Dr. Mac.

You're prone to fits on intense ranting that take a few pages before you begin to see reason. I would chuck the beginnings of most of your arguments right out the window if I was LMG. It's just one of those things where you get super passionate, hyper focused, and lean on your relative tiny experience vs. a company who has many people with a wide range of it. Everyone at every level is still learning no matter how experienced you are, so when you have someone you can tell is very limited in terms of what they've experienced, you scroll right past them calling you "the biggest hypocrite on earth" and will likely never take what they have to say as serious.

So in terms of you vs. the Youtube comment section, I can't see them viewing you as any different.

  5. Who remembers apps looking like this? i do and i wish we would go back to this design generally.

    1. TotallyNotGigabit

I do. Nicer on my eyes opposed to the flashlight in your face flat look.

      Ashley xD

@TotallyNotGigabit i know right! it's super nice. i wanna go back to this type of design but unfortunately the apps are just too old to use fulltime.

  6. so i did some more playing around with Mountain Lion.

i didn't know this but as it turns out, you can just install anything you want from the App Store on an old OS if you've downloaded the app in question from there before. i just went to the purchases page on the app store and i could install pages, imovie etc just fine. it gives you a warning being like hey you are running mountain lion wtf update, but if you ignore that it allows you to install the latest compatible version of whatever app you wanna download. strangely it doesn't let me install GarageBand, but i don't use that often anyway.

i have also installed the latest google chrome that this old OS supports which is version 49, it lacks things like sync (it doesn't work anymore) but i haven't encountered any websites that it won't render, there are some minor glitches but the forum for example works just fine. i'm not an idiot, i know that using an outdated browser is a security risk but i'm not logging into anything that doesn't have 2FA or has access to my financial accounts.

i'm really happy now, i can actually kinda live in mountain lion for some stuff. basic document editing still works fine in the old version of pages, youtube works just fine in Chrome 49, and i can edit video in the old version of iMovie. i wonder how well it'll all run, i'll be testing with it a lot from now on.

the pure speed of this OS is so nice. anything i click is instant. all apps only bounce once in the dock before they open and i don't have to wait for it like i have to when it's booted to Catalina.

  7. i want to cry.

my pc has developed yet another fault. this time it's the usb ports. a few hours ago i plugged my phone in and it started to charge, it then disconnected, all my usb stuff powered off and then everything turned back on. now that was odd, but not a dealbreaker. however i discovered if i leave my phone charging off of my pc it gets really hot, no matter what port i plug it in to and it charges really really slowly if i do that.

i was scared i'd broken my phone but it charges just fine off of the wall plug i normally use.

i'm so sick and tired of a 2 year old pc constantly developing faults, to the point where i can't even trust it plugging anything in via USB anymore for fear of it randomly shutting off all usb devices. imagine if i was doing a file transfer to an external drive when it did that! i would have most likely lost data.

i just... why. a 2 year old computer shouldn't be so unreliable! my 8 year old macbook pro has never let me down and never done anything this weird.

i officially give up on pc's. i am keeping this one just to maybe diagnose what's wrong with it and just be able to trust it for usb again so i can game on it, but it will never be a main machine for me. ever. again.

the first thing i'm doing tommorow is looking for a second MacBook just in case my current one breaks (it did some weird stuff about a month ago which was the result of a ram stick not being installed correctly) and i need a replacement immediately. for now i'm shutting my pc down and i'm gonna unplug it and take it off my setup. again.

  8. i'm really liking iOS 14. Apple have really polished the dark theme to the point where i really enjoy using it now.

all the little things such as the buttons when you have a contact selected being clearly spaced apart and a different shade of grey so you can easily see them is so nice.

If only there weren't all of the developers who never have enough time to adjust their Apps for the newest iOS:

    2. Ashley xD

      Ashley xD

@soldier_ph to be honest if you update on iOS X.0 releases you should expect glitches and bugs. when new OS's come out you should basically always disable updates until X.1 is out to avoid most of the bugs, that's always been the case.

  9. the only news site you should use.

  13. I did a bit of a journey back to 2012 software and website design! I so so so so wish UI design went back to this, all of these old programs look SO GOOD!!!!

    1. DrMacintosh

It's kinda weird how some elements of the UI have a lot more contrast than modern UIs and other parts lack contrast, like in Finder.

    2. Ashley xD

      Ashley xD

@DrMacintosh i know, but the Finder lacking contrast also gives it something... idk. i prefer this over Catalina and Big Sur's Finders any day though, maybe i'm biased with growing up with this UI design, i was 12 or 13 when this OS was current.

still though, it looks so much better than modern OS's. modern UI design is so flat and lifeless. these old UI's are so full of glossy refletions, the buttons glow with gloss when you hover over and click on them, ironically this looks more graphically demanding and imo more impressive on a technical level than moden flat UI's.

  14. ok, so i did an experiment. i dualbooted my 2012 MBP, with it's original OS. OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion. mostly because i wanted to try it and also because i want to run a few apps on there that modern macOS no longer works with.

and holy hell, is it FAST!

i know some people who just don't update their Mac's ever, and keep them on the OG OS, and they might be on to something. on 10.8 boot time is literally at most 7 seconds, from the point of pressing the power button. anything i click opens lightning fast, there are no beach balls, it boots up so fast the spinning circle below the apple logo doesn't even appear.

now this is expected, this MBP originally shipped with 500gb of spinning rust and 4gb of ram. it now has a 500GB 850 EVO (120gb allocated to 10.8, the rest to Catalina) and 16gb of ram. so i'd expect it to be fast as hell but not this fast. it's almost addicting how speedy it is. i'm used to it taking a second to load system preferences but on 10.8 it's just instant.

i might try to see how much i can get done on 10.8, of what i normally do on my Mac so i can use it like that a lot.. a bunch of my tasks should be easy to do on 10.8 since i don't need modern software for it. things like email, youtube, old games, spotify (i often listen to music while reading through inbox) should all still work on 10.8... maybe not totally secure but like, nothing i do is mission critical and i'll put an antivirus on it. this is gonna be fun to experiment with.

    1. ProjectBox153

You might want to look at 10.9 for more program compatibility. It'll still be fast.

    2. Ashley xD

      Ashley xD

@ProjectBox153 that's a difficult option. I was able to get 10.8 just by booting internet recovery since it came with this Mac, if I wanted 10.9 I'd have to get it from unofficial sources and I don't wanna do that. besides 10.8 is fine for what I want to use that OS for anyway which is old programs.

  15. finally made my Ubuntu install look pretty!

  16. after 2 long years i'm finally back on Ubuntu and it does feel very nice to be back. 20.04 has been a dream so far :)

    1. soldier_ph

      Ubuntu is my favourite Distro.

  17. well, it has finally happened. Linux has become better for my use than Windows. i needed to edit a video and i missed kdenlive, also i've started using a lot more foss programs for all my use and those just aren't as good for Windows.

    1. RoseLuck462

These days it's really more about the platform you prefer rather than any being particularly better than one another.

    2. Ashley xD

      Ashley xD

@RoseLuck462 for me it's about 1 app, kdenlive. yes, you can get that on Windows too but the windows version is buggy.

    3. soldier_ph

I've got Win 10 Pro as the Host and I use VirtualBox for Linux VMs. For me Windows is great for Gaming while I prefer to use Linux for development Work or Work in general.

UwU new voice typing! i might actually use that if it works really well as i get pain in my hands after typing a lot...

i get pain in my hands after typing a lot

The r/CustomKeyboards wants to know your location.

  19. yay new gpu's! maybe time for me to finally move on from 600 series and maybe get 2 900 series cards like 970's or something.

  20. i don't really get why people dismiss ghost pictures as immediately not real......

we have camera's that can capture infrared light which we humans can't normally see. it's entirely possible that normal camera's are just capable of capturing paranormal things that are invisible to us normally.

    1. Bombastinator

Because that’s not how they work.  It is not “entirely possible” if you actually know how they work.   There is a saying that “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”. What that means is that if you don’t understand how a technology works you can be told it is magic and there isn’t a way to tell the difference.  A wheelbarrow has actually been considered magic because the people viewing it didn’t have the background to figure out how it worked.

For the people who know enough about how cameras work the concept of ghost pictures is stupid.

Film cameras use granules of material sensitive to a given light range.  CCD cameras do  the same but with a sensor.  Those sensors or granules detect radiation within a certain range and react according to it.  That is all.

“Ghost pictures”are generally tricks of peculiarities or faults of the way a given camera is designed.  They are only “ghost pictures” if one doesn’t look deep enough into the given situation.

human technology became complicated enough hundreds of years ago for this sort of trickery to become possible.  Sailing ships that are “pulled along by unseen forces”(true)”beneath the waves!”(false)

      an example:

it turns out that humanity actually had how sails work wrong during that time. They made square rig ships. Sails don’t “catch the wind”. If they did sloop rig ships wouldn’t work. It turns out square rig had some advantages for things like turning so they stayed on even after faster and higher pointing designs were created.

There was a time, just pre 1900 when cameras were new, that “ghost pictures” were the rage because cameras were poorly understood.  After cameras became better understood “ghost pictures” were relegated to incorrect understanding. Much like sails “catching the wind”.

”I don’t understand why people don’t think ghost pictures are real” means “I have a pre-20th century understanding of cameras” it’s a bit like that juggalo song “how do magnets work”  there are people who understand how magnets work and they will generally even tell you if you care. Or you can just go about your day worrying about different things and leave the magnet people to do their thing.
