Froody129 reacted to colonel_mortis in Two thousand year old scroll decoded using machine learning
    Summary

Several paragraphs of text have been decoded from the inside of a scroll that was buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. These scrolls were too fragile to physically unroll, so researchers took high resolution CT scans of the scrolls, and released the data to the public, promising $700,000 to the first team to decode 4 passages from the inside of the scroll, based on the scan (along with a number of other prizes along the way), before the end of 2023.

This is an achievement that could only have been done with machine learning, and the technical feat here can't be understated. It has taken a lot of work to get this far, it's incredible to see what the community can achieve when it's given a goal like this. The $1M+ prize pool (donated by various mostly rich people) certainly helped to incentivise people to participate, and it will be interesting to see if this model gets adopted for any other projects in the future. If they are able to achieve their goal of extending this technology to read all 800 scrolls, this will be a big breakthrough in our understanding of Ancient Rome, let alone the other potential places where this technology could be used.

A quick search shows that anything under 65w will only charge when the laptop is turned off. I'd personally look for a 100w charging solution; they're a little more expensive, but I think it'll be far more useful. I've linked a few, as well as the thread on Reddit which might be a useful read to you.

Froody129 reacted to treefroggy in I've Been Living in my Retro Game Museum Digital Nomad Van Build for 3 Years
This is somewhat of an introduction post. I know that's what the other forum is for, but hear me out. This is my digital nomad build from 2018. I haven't stopped living in it for a day. I have already made a couple posts discussing products I bought after viewing LTT reviews. That's why I'm here actually, to discuss the elitemini and keychron products I bought because of LTT reviews... But I suspect this thread will get more attention than the posts I really came here to make...
I heard Linus was producing an "Ultimate Camper Van" video, so I thought I'd show that I already have been living in my own ultimate camper van / mobile retro game museum since 2018. I first started living in vehicles when I was 16, and I'm now 28, so I'm pretty much a professional at this point.
This first shot is old and blurry, and I've since replaced the lights, but it shows how I use my PC in bed.

I built the van completely from scratch, starting with an empty metal rustbucket.
I bought $800 of spray foam insulation, the type used for walk-in freezers.
It's very much shanty-hacker-digital-nomad style. I more luxuries in here than most people have in their apartments, but I don't have it looking like most bougie instagram people who don't actually live in their van.
I built the electrical system around being able to use my CRT monitor. It's a JVC H-TM1750CG and has analog RGB input. I have all original consoles, modded myself, with custom-made RGB cables I made out of Xbox 360 cables.
450 Watts of solar on the roof. I mounted residential panels up there. 12v 200a/h lifepo batteries from aliexpress. 1000watt sine wave inverter. MPPT charge controller. I have a toilet, electric rice cooker, sink, etc.

Again, I've since replaced the LED xmas lights with LED ribbon lights. Much better. This is just showing off all my consoles. They're all modded to use SD cards or hard drives with full game libraries. I actually play games too. How could I not, with that CRT right by my bedside? In 2020, I beat over 20 rpgs on it. I'm quite a purist when it comes to my games. I don't emulate, at all.

When I'm not in the city, I'm in the forest.
I make lots of CRT posts elsewhere on the internet. I don't have them all saved on my PC though so if y'all are interested, I'll have to find them to post here.
Also, as an LTT fan, gotta say Anthony is my favorite!

I'd just to remind everyone that a lot of Intel and AMD processors have built in TPMs.
On AMD it's called a fTPM.
On Intel it's called a PTT.

It can often be enabled in the BIOS and you can check if it's working by opening up the start menu, typing in "tpm" and clicking on the "security processor" thing that comes up.

I don’t know if this has been mentioned but IMO it’s quite obvious that this allows Google to know specifically who is a marketable audience (people with money) and who is actually a real person. Lots of YT accounts are bots. Forcing the link of ID allows for a very targeted advertising strategy.

The whole censorship conspiracy thing comes off as a bit tinfoil hat. I guess maybe YT may also use it to block videos they don’t like, but I think a profit motive is the clearest incentive here.

    Summary

Microsoft has revealed that it's been experimenting with a “two-phase immersion cooling technology” to prevent its data centre servers from overheating and causing outages across its cloud-based communications platforms such as Microsoft Teams. The tech giant is said to be the first cloud provider running two-phase immersion cooling in a production environment.

This is actually pretty interesting. Microsoft being the first to implement to implement a rather new technology. Two-phase cooling is actually pretty interesting at least for me but it is unlikely for this tech to trickle down into the consumer spae but I'm sure Linus will find a way to get his hands on this tech. But yea, microsoft becoming sustainable is a good initiative and here's to hoping that other companies follow suit with technology and practices that actually work.

Considering how lazy rockstar seems to have been lately I'm not actually that surprised that someone else was able to optimize loading times before they did. I wouldn't be surprised if someone is able to build a better anti cheat against modders before Rockstar does. I mean this game has been out for over nearly 8 years, and they're still milking all the way through 3 console generations.

Try undervolting. It's not dangerous at all. It's exactly the same process as overclocking but you're just keeping your clocks at stock and dropping your voltage. It takes some fiddling to get it right but it makes a big difference in how much heat your card will be putting out.

Did you reapply thermal paste? That might also help, especially if the card is older/ has been through a lot of heat cycles.

Just like leaving a light bulb on in an empty room all the time would only increase my power bill by only a few percent but is still utterly useless and therefore I have no excuse to leave the damned thing on all the time.

I'm not even a gamer. (as in I don't think I game often enough to call myself one) I only buy a new GPU every 10 years or whatever. My R7 260x has been fine for years, and still is. I could use this thing for another 5 years without a problem. I don't care that GPUs are expensive because of mining. What bothers me is that crypto currencies use an awful lot of power for no real good reason. (that is of course subjective) To me their usefulness seems too small to justify the energy cost.

This kind of hits the nail on its head; other things that use lots of power do something useful. It may use a load of power, and we need to work on that, but at least something's actually done. An actual problem is being solved, rather than a virtual one that we created ourselves.

IMO crypto isn't bad for the environment because it uses lots of power, but because it does nothing or little of actual value to the world in general with the power that it uses.

Edit: From what I know I don't like crypto currencies, perhaps because the benefits they provide have little value in my opinion, but getting rid of them by now is probably unrealistic.

I'm no expert on crypto stuff, so I don't comment on it too much, but from what I know about it, I think cryptocurrencies shouldn't exist. I just hate the idea that people around the world are trying to reduce carbon emissions in all sorts of ways, sometimes even investing large sums of money, and then there's a bunch of people burning up a huge amount of power in these computers doing nothing useful at all, just to make what seems to me like a marginal amount of profit. Power that may as well be spent to do actual useful work. Imagine all that energy being used for scientific research for instance.

Froody129 reacted to Admiral Shark in Some questions about the IBM model M keyboard
TLDR with the differences: over time, IBM and later Lexmark applied some cost-saving measures to the design to keep them 'competitive' with the rising horde of rubber dome keyboards at the time (which can be generalised into four generations, of which Unicomp continues to make the the fourth). Whilst it's argued whether these actually affected typing feel (some notice a relative difference, some don't, but all good condition Model Ms will type well anyway), it does potentially have quality of life implications. Deskthority's article on the subject explains the difference quite well, but TLDR in Enhanced Keyboard (101/102 key Model M) terms:
The metal backplate got progressively thinner resulting in a reducation of weight Metal wire key stabilisers were swapped with plastic rod ones Later Ms added drainage holes and/or channels for liquid spillage Modular SDL to AT or PS/2 cables were progressively discarded in favour of fixed cables The final generation had a unique controller board design that resulted in a change of the lock-light LED alignment from bottom-left to top-middleish Of course, the IBM logo badge changed For the most part, I wouldn't worry about the factory. Whenever IBM introduced a change to the design, most of the factories (predominately IBM UK, IBM US Lexington later Lexmark after 1991, IBM US Rest Of until 1993-ish, and IBM Mexico) seemed to have synced up within a year. The only major difference to note is that IBM UK Model Ms have a ABS spacebar with a grounding wire underneath, due to stricter European law to combat against static electricity build-up caused by CRTs, and they only partially implemented the drainage system (added holes for liquid to escape, but didn't add channels to make it easy for that to happen). Neither affect the typing feel or overall build quality, but just note the ABS spacebar can yellow. If that bothers you, you can just order a PBT-made replacement from Unicomp or find a US/Mexico sourced PBT spacebar off eBay.

As to what to look for and look out for:
Rivets. All Enhanced Keyboard-style Model Ms have an internal assembly held together with many plastic rivets that can break over time. If too many are missing, you run the risk of it feeling less crisp to type on or outright failure that can only be fixed with doing a 'bolt-mod' yourself or sending it to Unicomp for refurbishment. Some might have differing opinions, but usually up to five missing *should* be alright provided the ones missing are spread out (if ~5 were missing in one spot, there's probably trouble!) The 7-digit part number on the back. The part number can be used to reveal most of the specs of the keyboard, confirm it's genuine by comparing the keyboard with other known examples, and tell what system they were originally intended for and what their connection type might be if not visible/stated. As a rule of thumb for PC-compatibles, 139012x/139014x (without lights for locks) means it's XT auto-sense, 139013x means AT, 13914xx means PS/2 systems, 92G74xx/42H12xx means PS/2 or other mid-'90s systems, etc. They can also reveal if it's a rubber dome variant that you probably want to avoid (71G46xx). Anyway, you can use my website's database, r/ModelM's wiki (which is based on my website's data anyway, in slimmer form), or deskthority's wiki to find out the specs of a keyboard from it's part number (provided it's known, if not and you can't find out more from Google, just post the part number here and I can help you) The connection, given terminal Model Ms exist. Usually, it's obvious since most 102-key terminal Ms have an RJ-45-like modular jack, but there's some (like 13863xx) out there with a DIN connector that looks like AT but has a different pin arrange (240-degree vs AT's 180-degree arrangement). If unsure, the part number can be used to find this out. Hope this helps!
